It is a simple fact that people that are generally unhappy in one place ... and move to another place ... are generally unhappy there too.

Lowest common denominator all in all.

Cassandra ... what "specialised interests" that cause one to "not think straight"? are you referring to?

Didn't really expect an answer did I ? :o

What part precisely do you not understand? I would have thought my meaning was entirely clear.I was making a general comment that those in Thailand solely for their "specialised interests" (bargirls) may not have the time or motivation to think very clearly about politics.I certainly wouldn't put you in this category so for heavens sake pipe down along with your camp followers.

I AM DEFINATELY NOT AMERICAN! :D:DAnd why is this a bad thing? :D

Only a yank would need to ask that question..Are you sure you're not American... ? :o

totster :D

Tots, I could've sworn you knew I was a Yank. Yes, I had a sense of humor about Yanks, but when I reached the 10,000 yank joke which was a rip off of other yank jokes and told again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again........you get the picture yet?

LOL ... yeppers certainly doesn't include me since I am gay. But the implications ... well always room for folks that can't read a topic here ... <politics?>

jd, I'm not sure but you might have missed his snide implication. "camp" followers, was a reference to you being gay. (Chambers Concise Dictionary; camp: effeminately homosexual; characteristics of homosexuals.)

I told you, he's not a very nice person.

Maybe he should be the one to 'pipe down' with his homophobic remarks. :o

When someone makes an extreme or very negative post and you are about to put fingers to keyboard in angry reply - wait - click the posters name and check his/her previous contributions. A quick perusal will give an insight to the 'mind-set' of the poster.

I suspect that many people use forums such as TV as a form of "therapy", they get rid of their frustrations in a manner which is much more humane than "kicking the cat" or "beating the wife". Others are perhaps a little sad, "wanabees" who wish they could live in LoS but are stuck in a mundane world and will never be lucky enough to visit Thailand for more than a couple of weeks a year (if that). They complain about the traffic in BKK, the poor range of beer on offer, lack of their favourite food at Tesco Lotus, when they are actually sitting in a small room somewhere in Bradford, Berlin, Boston, or Brisbane.

The fact is there are many good people in TV land who try to assist other members but before you answer a posting, check the previous postings, you may save yourself from being "trolled"

Since I had no idea Jd was gay until he informed us, your comments are off target. My reference to camp followers was in fact mainly in reference to yourself. You have been aggrieved ever since I pointed out some rather foolish observations you made.Get over it.

You have no evidence one way or the other whether I am a "nice guy" or not. What is absurd however is to suggest I am homophobic.

Perhaps we could "nest" this new forum to form a trio along with:

"I left brain at the airport and now longer have powers of critical thought"

and

"On behalf of what's I absolutely know is good for Thailand I suspend all rights of opinions that differ from my own"

Clearly you are describing the bulk of posters and moderators on this forum.

There's nothing to get over.

It is clearly you who seemingly has a problem with foolish observations - like suggesting that Thais do not respond to constructive criticism when receiving their annual appraisals (what kind of manager are you anyway?); and because you "didn't choose to be here", (what sort of tosh is that?), that it gives you the "right" to criticise and then you make snide comments about sex tourists not being able to think straight - and these were on this thread alone!

I've also read some of other other masterpieces - many supercilious put downs - like the one where you have a real rant at someone because he couldn't spell or write English very well.

If you're a nice guy, I hate to meet one that's not nice :D

So you get over it, and to use your own, so educated prose, "Pipe down". :D:D

Do please calm down.Clearly you have issues with many of the points I have made. That is quite acceptable but it is more productive if you come back with reasoned arguments not just abuse. To take one example most experienced farang managers certainly recognise that annual staff appraisals can be something of a major challenge in Thailand.I have heard this affirmed by Henry Holmes who is a long established expert on Thai management culture and attitudes.Of course there are ways to deal with the problem, and if you have thoughts on this it would be genuinely interesting to share these .However your reaction was to label me as a "bad manager" simply because I identified the problem.Perhaps you don't have much experience in this area.

I repeat I didn't choose to be here because I was sent here by my employer as the last in a series of international postings in the Middle East, Hk and Japan. What are you trying to say?

You have lost me with your repeated references to sex tourists, my alleged homophobia and my so called snide comments.Yes I made what I thought was a facetious comment about those with specialised interests not thinking straight. You didn't think it was amusing and that is your right.

As to my criticism of others language skills my concern was clarity of meaning not quibbling pedantically over for example split infinitives.A moderator disagreed with me but that happens some times.

I am so calm, I'm almost asleep. :o

But just before I crawl off to bed, shall we have a look at some of your criticisms?

Quotes (from various topics)

...Don't attempt sarcasm if you have an unsure grasp of the language as I am afraid, as on this occasion , it will misfire.Thai Visa is an English language forum and although nobody expects all members to have perfect English, clarity of expression is important.Slovenly and obscure language, eg "no bashing about" especially from those with a responsibility for administration will be rebuked. Please could offenders pull their socks up.....

....If I was a member of a Russian, Persian, Japanese, Thai or German forum where my mother tomgue was not in use, I would do my level best to achieve a level where I could make a clear and useful contribution.I would not make arrogant and embarrassing posts wondering how well members would perform in a language that was not used by the forum.....

.....Don't post in block capitals:it is considered rude. And while I'm at it, try and write grammatical English."No bashing about" is illiterate and sloppy. The whole point of writing clear English is so that others know exactly what you mean.It is not a question of being pedantic or seeking to find fault. If clear English is not used there is a problem with interpretation of meaning as I am afraid is the case with your rather post.If you are not up to a minimum standard of clear expression, with the greatest respect, you had better reconsider your position as a moderator........

.....Even if you knew how to spell it, you don't appear to understand what "self righteous" means.....

I will let the foregoing endless pearls of grammatically correct wisdom conclude the debate, otherwise we will bore everyone to death. :D

Please remember there is a lot of bad grammer on this Forum, a lot of terrible spelling mistakes, a lot of words that aren't words. Why? Because the poster doesn't know where the bloody edit button is. :o

What a lot of time some people have on their hands trawling through Cassandra's witty-if I may say so myself- but now irrelevant old posts, but not enough time apparently to answer his points in a calm and reasoned manner.Game, set and match I think.

More importantly, why would a man call himself, "Cassandra"? :o

Interesting that you should pose this question.I might as well ask why you think of yourself as an American civil war general. But for the more literate there is of course a long tradition of male Cassandras, the most distinguished being the late Bill Connor, brilliant columnist of the Daily Mirror. The point of course is not Cassandra's gender but the fact that his fate was to speak the unvarnished truth but never to be believed.

You really do think a great deal of yourself don't you?

Your posts read like upper middle management memos to the poor minions under your control. (I bet you're writing one right now)

Do you think that anyone of this forum cares about some self styled farang expert on Thai culture called Henry Holmes?

Your vanity disqualifies you - tournament to Mobi. :o:D:D

So the conclusion to this episode has been finally reached.

You lot don't mind Thailand.......you just hate each other. :o

Lampard, I don't hate anyone. It's impossible anyway on a forum like this to really get to know someone anyway.I think forum readers can evaluate an exchange for themselves, ie who is generally on the money and who is generally being silly.I wouldn't have continued but for anyone interested in cross cultural management issues, I would be sorry if they had been put off Henry Holmes' published work on the Thai work place. It's wel worth having a look at.

And a final piece of advice to Mobi, if you have been vanquished in a debate just retire from the fray and lick one's wounds. That's what I do.Cheers.

Well I was going to call it a day - but as he hasn't, I won't - and as he said, I might have a bit more time on my hands than he has.

I have never hated anyone in my life - I just think he's pathetic.

If you look back at how all this started, you will find I made the most innocuous of posts, basically agreeing with another post, and adding that I thought that sometimes constructive criticism may be a good thing. Well, I ask you ? You can't get much more innocuous than that can you?

Then our 'friend' must have decided I was an easy mark, and made his patronising comments about my 'polyanna like remarks''; implied that my comments are somehow devalued because he assumed (incorrectly) that I came here as a tourist and decided to stay, and goes on to say how his Thai staff don't respond to constructive criticsim when he tries to appraise them, and that he has some divine right to complain about Thailand because he didn't choose to come here. (Is it any surprise that his poor staff resent his critical appraisals?)

One piece of advice to you Mr Cassandra, be careful who you take on next time, as you might bite off more than you can chew - or lick - your wounds, not mine :D I don't have to retire from any fray - I'm not retiring from anything, except work- and unlike you, I enjoy living in Thailand very much. :D

Lampard, sorry about the thread. I'll leave it to you - if you tell us both to stop - I will, if he will. :o
