Kind of an academic question and only Thailand related in that a lot of people use torrents to get their shows and sports events....

Okay, the well known site that was originally in Sweden, then Greenland, Iceland, Peru, etc. etc.... They keep getting their domain suspended. TP.....

My question is: Why does their .org domain remain active? .org is under US ICANN administration so it's curious as to why they cannot just seize it (as they have readily done with many .com domains).

Can't answer your question at all, but my connection to PB is through an .se server, although I've no idea where it is (don't particularly care either, as long as it keeps working).

Yeah, they are currently back at their .se domain, which will probably be seized as soon as the Swedish courts order it so. So it looks like they are just playing playground keepaway.

However anyone who uses them can be redirected to whatever their current domain will be using the .org domain. It would seem 'easier' for the authorities to just shut down that down.... I'm assuming they cannot do so for some reason, anyone out there know why?

Is it something like this? Not sure.

Aren't they a list of torrents? How much storage does that list need? When a domain name is seized, the computer with the list of torrents remains untouched. I think the computer can still be connected to the internet using the IP address, but because the domain name has been seized typing the domain name in the URL does not connect to the IP address so the list cannot be accessed. If you know the IP address then you don't ever need the domain name.

If this is the case then the copyright 1% need to work on the service providers to prevent the computer with the list having access to the internet. Don't know how they can do that.

I cannot imagine TOT allowing our friends access to the internet, but maybe?

Why does their .org domain remain active?

Guess:- These guys have learnt to cope with copyright troll harassment. I guess that they use URL redirection of some sort. When I used .pe and that got blocked I was redirected back to the .se site.

It is hard to know.

They also switched to .gy (Guyana) for a brief time before being seized there and switching back to .se. They have 70 domain name reserved. wink.png

Domains and servers are completely separate things. A domain can easily be pointed to one or many servers and switched in minutes if needed.

The servers are mostly in regions quite lax on their laws.

Domains are a different matter with one central authority per domain extension and many different authorities controlling one or many extensions each. If the org is still active (havent checked) then it simply means a different group had a vote based on the takedown request most likely filed and voted to allow it to stay (or is still under appeal).

Yeah, that's my logic as well, just wondering if someone knew the specifics as it's a rather public and popular site. Okay, so they need to go through PubInternetReg in the USA, which presumably allowed some offshore registrar to register that .org domain.... so it's either the offshore registar that won't comply with the takedown or the US based 'parent' perhaps has some policy not to force their will upon the offshore registrar.
