Popular Post catmac
Great news for Thailand and its people. It looks like there will be a properly contested election with the chance of a genuinely elected Government and a sensible opposition.I believe the country will be better off without Abhisit and his poodles wasting valuable space in Parliament.

Perhaps he wanted a break from politics? Personally I would dispute that particular comment for a number of reasons. There is a economic and financial storm brewing on the horizon for Thailand as well as a bubbling cauldron of civil unrest on a nearer horizon. The decision that the Democrats made is indeed a wise one, Szu Tzu classic strategies adopted to a political end.. One needs to remember that in military tactics a strategic retreat is viewed by ones opponents as a sign of weakness, however in reality a strategic retreat is a masterpiece of a delayed yet war winning attack strategy. One needs to lose a battle or two before one wins the war , Edited December 28, 2013 by siampolee

One needs to lose a battle or two before one wins the war , So the dems opt out if there are political and financial hurdles ahead. Yet they are supposedly the Answer to all of Thailands problems (according to a very large number of posters on here) - Strategic withdrawal and war winning attack strategy, my A. They know they wouldn't win but refuse to acknowledge why. They've tried army coups, judicial coups, street protests and now another boycott. They are irrelevant.

It looks like there will be a properly contested election with the chance of a genuinely elected Government and a sensible opposition.I believe the country will be better off without Abhisit and his poodles wasting valuable space in Parliament. 55555 There are only 2 significant political parties in Thailand , Pheua Thai and the Democrats. The others are either mercenary, ie Chart Thai Pattana ( Banharn's famous quote about having a 'dry mouth' when in the Opposition is a classic), or the parties are too small to be effective- Chuwit an Purachai's parties- tiny parties. Without the Democrats there will be no Opposition in parliament and the election will be a farce.

geriatrickid
Not one of abhisits shrewdest political decisions. Perhaps he wanted a break from politics? Without Suthep and his ability to deliver in the south, the Democrats will most likely post dismal results as a % of the popular vote. Rather than have to live with perhaps a 25% drop in its share of the popular vote, Abhisit's advisers threw in the towel. The poor results would have been used to hammer another nail into the Democrat party's coffin. Suthep is the Democrat party in the south.

gerry1011
What would be nice is to have the PT form a large coalition with as many small parties as possible. This would represent the largest portion of the (reasonable) population, and send the Dems and their extremist yellow thugs back to the dark ages. The strategy of PT is to speak with everyone, except Suthep and the Dems. They probably convinced everyone that the best way to fight Suthep is to participate in the democratic elections that he wants so much to avoid. With more parties registering compared to the last elections, it can be seen as a good sign. All these parties showed that they refuse to bow to Suthep’s dictatorship. Very good !!! But of course, Suthep and the Dems will continue their destructive and criminal battle against democracy, so we cannot be sure of anything... But if most people show support for the elections there is still hope...
tomacht8
Before we vote, please can we change the rules?Like next election without the criminals. Especially those who were convicted by crimes or corruption, and all this guys running around on bail (some since 12 years or more), and all condemned as corrupt and all they were baned from parliament already. The barrier of five years ban is "shit". Start with new honest people aka representatives of the people! Please.

Thailand
Abhisit and his UNDems must be crying themselves to sleep over an incredibly stupid decision not to partake in the elections.and now with so many hats in the ring the military may well oversee the elections that would definitely put Suthep out in the cold as it would be a turn around by part of those in the background that have been backing him. PTP telling the EC to get some balls may well be the turning point Its better to have tried and failed than to live life wondering what wouldve happened if I had tried Alfred Lord Tennyson Suthep's only recourse now is to instigate more and more violence which should finally lead to his demise. hughben
Will traditional 'democrats' show up and vote? I doubt it. Who will vote for these parties no one has heard of? Will the elections take place? Will there be complete chaos in Bangkok before and after the elections (if they go ahead)? If I was a bookmaker, I wouldn't take bets.
