Hernia operation

Prices can vary widely, and at some hospitals, elective surgery like this can be negotiated.

The hospitals in the area I know of are:

Bangkok Pattaya

Pattaya International

Pattaya Memorial

Phyathai (Sri Racha)

Samitivej (Chonburi)

Government hospital in Sattahip, Queen Sikirit

Many prefer to go to Bangkok as there are more options and there tend to be more specialists. If you are interested in that option, let me know and I'll move this topic over there.

Queen Sirikit IS a good hospital really and great prices. if there is any wait for a Naval person or a Thai prson then they will take care of them first however that is not meant to be a negative statement.

I made several visits to Queen Sirikit Hospital to evaluate a hernia and was scheduled for laparoscopic surgery about a year ago. I was impressed by the two doctors I saw and everyone at the hospital was very helpful and pleasant to deal with. A Thai friend went with me. The doctors were totally fluent in English, but other people there, not so much.

The surgery was scheduled a few months after the examination since it was deemed not to be an emergency and, of course, naval personnel were given priority. 48 hours before I was due to go in they called to say the surgery was cancelled and I'd have to go in for another appointment to schedule again. I didn't understand why it was cancelled because of language issues. My friend called and got a garbled explanation (at least it sounded garbled when repeated to me) and he got quite angry with whoever it was who called. Probably a case of shooter the messenger who had nothing to do with the decision.

So I didn't want to put it off any longer. Visited several hospitals in the area. Ended up with Dr. Paiboon at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. Saw him on a Friday and surgery was scheduled the following Monday. He recommended the open surgery. I put down a deposit of Baht 80,000.

Checked in on Monday morning and was finished with surgery by mid-day. They tentatively booked me for two nights, but I was up and walking about in a few hours. Spent one night in hospital and checked myself out the following morning. Was on IV meds in hospital and oral medication for a week at home. Never had even a slight twinge of pain. Not a single post operative issue and the scar is almost invisible. Total cost ran around Baht 100,000, but it was well worth it.

I have no complaints about Queen Sirikit Hospital and it would have been a lot cheaper, but obviously they have some scheduling issues. The doctor who was going to do the surgery did offer to do the surgery sooner if I wanted to have him do the operation at a private hospital. I should have taken him up on that, but at the time I didn't see the need. Quite possibly the result would have been equally good, but in the unlikely event I need surgery again, I think I'd head straight for Dr. Paiboon at BPH. Things couldn't have gone better.

I second the recommendation for Queen Sirikit. My friend had his done last month for 35,000 baht, and he does not speak Thai. First day check-in. Second day operation. Third day home.

Is this typical in Thailand? Over 10 years ago I took a friend to have double hernia surgery in California. Check in at 0800 hrs, pre op exam and prep completed 0845 hrs, surgery 0930, at 1230 I was driving him home.

Yep. Not a bad idea here, too.

How long your in depends on what sort of repair needs doing, I was in for an open repair at BKK Rayong a few years ago and was in for 2 days, the actual surgery took 4.5 hours and they kept me

So nothing to do with "typical" Thailand

I've had the Hernia Op three times.

First was in Australia in 2006. Even with Private Health cover it cost around AUD$1,000 and it didn't work.

I then had the op in Chiang Mai about 11 months later. It cost a little less but still didn't fix the thing.

Third time lucky.... well so far. I was working back in Australia in 2010 in a major regional city and my wife rushed me in to the Public Hospital on a Sunday afternoon as I was in agony. They brought in a Consultant Surgeon and transferred me to the Private Hospital next door where the op was carried out and so far, so good. This one cost me only about AUD$150 with my Private Health Insurance, why the difference? I have no idea but I wasn't complaining.
