evadgib
Car Battery Excellent service from the shop opposite Jacks Bar, Maenam (within sight of Dan Auto which is on the same side as Jacks). They fitted a replacement battery in just 5 mins which was cheaper that the old one by THB 600. I managed to get jump-started in order to get there but they'll bring a battery & fit it locally (Maenam) if you're able to provide accurate directions. The phone no on their invoice is 077 247270 or 425594 Fax 430186. Edited February 27, 2014 by evadgib

Popular Post samuijimmy
Repairing eye glasses.... Some one suggested trying the tent stall out side the Nathon Post Office to get eye glass lenses renewed... which out having to buy a new set of frames....which are generally over priced ! I did that today and had new lenses replaced on my scratched specs.... Done in about 15 minutes for 800 baht.... (plastic lens) Frames are reasonably priced too ranging from 1000 baht up, not sure if that includes prescription lens.... But they are not "Gucci" frames! I had checked with my eye doc in Nathon, he wanted between 2000 baht (plastic) 2500 baht for glass.... with my current frames.... (Better to get your eye's tested first and get a prescription.....) ...My long distance sight is only a little bit off.... Done right in front of your eyes! islandguy
Can anybody recommend someone for a small roofing job? Just need to have some sections of roofing renailed at leading edge where it is pulling up with the wind. It is an overhang so not a critical place for leaks but a two story roof. Also would like to put in a section of guttering, so probably a one day job for one good worker (and probably a helper). Happy to pay to better quality so nobody falls off or through roof! sticky
Can anyone recommend someone who can change the medium in a large water filter? Was originally installed by the water people just past the temple in Maenam, but they are proving difficult to deal with say they are coming and don't show up etc. Vern nice couple though. Have a friend who had a water filter installed by the water people just before Big C coming from Bophut. But warned me off them because of poor service. robsamui
Oh dear! Not my lucky day! Came in here expecting to see glowing tales of recommendation for dozens of small Thai building companies able to do all sorts of little jobs. But everyone seems to be looking! Just like I am! There's not one Thai company (or man) listed. I need a patch earth 12 feet by 12 dug out 40 cms deep and a concrete pad laying on it - that's all. Plus a low block wall around 3 sides for the rain to run away. One farang company quoted me at 5,000B a day labour! One Thai company quoted me at 6,000B a day labour! What's going on! Hey ho! R Well Rob - welcome to the real world. Thanks to the 300 baht a day minimum wage - there is no cheap labour anymore. There are a few reasons for this - but not relevent here. So - most cheap labour comes from Myanmar. Almost all of the construction workers on Samui are Burmese. They are here either legally or illegaly. Lots of both. Where there are good reliable Thai workers - they can choose the jobs that they do. They can either pick one or two 'nice ones' (large job lots with good money) or they can pick the bits and pieces that you and I need. No prizes for guessing their preference. When the big jobs dry up - they will turn towards the smaller ones BUT - they drop them in an instance when another big job appears on the horizon. eg - a friend of mine wants a small wall built. He hires a builder that he has known for years to do the job. Said builder has no labourers so he hires the Burmese workers on the next site to do the job - after 5 pm!

That is exactly what I was hoping to find! But did you note what I was being quoted? Never mind 300 baht a day - I was being expected to fork out 2,500B a day each for 2 Thai workers! 10K baht labour for 2 guys for 2 days! (And these are youths who turned up on a motorbike - no truck/pickup to cart stuff about - and then also expected me to have all the materials bought and ready waiting for them when they turned up!!!!!!!) Not to mention they dropped the price from 15K for 2 days when I said WHAAAAAAT?! I'd be delighted to get it for 300 baht a day per person if I could! I'd happily pay 1000B per person per day. That's why I was whinging I fink U musta missed the point. 2.5K a day is not on for unskilled labour. Got any friends with builders with Burmese workers knocking about?? You mentioned once there were "camps" around your home, perhaps try asking there.... ? Maybe some can do on their day off! ? You'll need to supervise though... are you up to that? Popular Post robsamui
I wanted a small building job doing and it took me several months of careful looking (and then checking their other work) before I found the right company. Recommenced 100% My (rented) house is high up on concrete stilts - enough to get 2 motorbikes underneath. First thought - just get the slope leveled off and have a concrete base. Then I realised that with heavy rain all the side soil would get washed in - so it needed a low wall around. So then why not go one step further and make it secure and lockable? - turn it into a small garage and workshop that I could safely leave tools and equipment in. I checked on 3 lots of (Thai) people advertising - together with my owner's family and then some Danish guy who was recommended to me. The lowest price was from 2 Thai kids who turned up on a motorbike. They gave me a price for it all in ten minutes. Basically it was dig flat, concrete straight onto the dirt and drop the low block wall onto this, then nail chicken wire around the outside of the supports. They gave me a list that just said "4 bags concrete, sand, stones, 30 blocks" and expected me to know all about it and where to get it from. I had to get these supplies and pay them up front in full and they would come and do the work. They gave me the names of three people/places they had done work for and I went to check. Likewise my owners. It was real 'farmer-style' work, same quality as the Burmese workers' sheds you see about. I ended up checking the most expensive one last - a Danish guy named Brian, with his own registered company. He turned up in a pickup and spent 30 minutes measuring up. Then went away and priced up all the materials, and came back with a price the next day. More than double the Thai prices. We talked and he really seemed to know what he was doing. I went to see an example of something kind of similar he had done and it looked excellent. I took him on. I kept a log of what hours they put in. In all it came to 97 man-hours spread over 8 days - Brian working with either one or two Thai workers. Skip the next part if you're not technical! Ground dug out level. Steel rebar rod cut and wired into a mesh with 6-inch-long spurs sticking up around the edges to key into the blockwork. Concrete laid. Steel frames made to measure to fit each of the slightly different spaces and welded up to contain the heavy galvanised mesh. Frames had spurs sticking down to key into the blockwork. Frames given 1 coat primer and 3 coats paint. Frames fitted and sealed with sealing compound around the edges. Blockwork laid to key into floor and frames. Tops of the blocks shuttered all around and concrete poured in to bed the frame bases to the tops of the blocks. Sliding door made very slightly out of square to match and fit the slightly out of square space - this was the construction of the house, not the work Brian had done! Sliding door hung and greased, frame drilled for padlock, earth infilled and levelled all around the outside of the blocks, building debris cleared and taken away. Concrete floor washed. Small drain made to take away future washing water. He asked for no money up front, although I gave him the cost of the materials. He remembered every little thing I mentioned and made sure it was done without me needing to remind him. It was not only a real quality job but Brian himself is a perfectionist and has a memory like a computer. He doesn't advertise but goes on word of mouth only. He's not cheap. But he's really good! Solid Danish Construction - tel 089-472-4794.
