Does anyone here have experience with Bumrungrad hospital. My 4 year old son needs a surgery to get his dermoid removed but I'm not sure if Bumrungrad is the best hospital. Eagerly waiting for your stories and suggestions.

Thanks

At Bumrungard I went to three departments: dental, ENT, and neck, and at all of them it felt like they were rushing through, trying to get rid of me as soon as they could. There were also very long queues, it was always busy.

I prefer Phayathai 2. It's a lot quieter and the doctors take more time during consultations. Slightly cheaper, also.

Everyone has different experiences and different expectations. We have been taking our daughter to Bumrungrad since she was 2 years old and we have never had a problem. The Doctors, Nurses, assistants and clerical staff are all excellent, we would have no hesitation in recommending Bumrungrad to anyone.

So we saw a surgeon at Bumrungrad hospital. He said that he would do a surgery on my son and quoted a price of about 60,000 baht. Then a few days later we got an email from the hospital saying that they had choosen a plastic surgeon for us and quoted a price of 60,00-80,000. Then today I got an email from the Dr we met, he said he has a plastic surgeon in mind for our son and sent us an estimate of 120,000-130,000 baht for general anesthesia and short stay. All other services excluded. Now, the increase in price leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If they had told us it costs 150,000 baht right from the beginning I would have been fine. We we did this in the West it would have cost more.

For many of us who enjoy free healthcare back home, this concept of shopping around for healthcare is totally alien to us.

You need ask yourself is the procedure (operation) routine?

If it is then you can go to almost any hospital.

If it is non-urgent then don't be afraid to play one hospital off against the other, ie: "the other hospital quoted only X amount"

You will be surprised how much these hospitals are willing to come down in price.

That is probably better decision. I had car accident in Thailand and I have to say the medical standard IS NOT up to what they claim to be. I almost died during my medical treatment period of 3 months there. The charge for the inpatient room is higher than most hospitals but it doesn't mean that you can expect better quality. In fact, the facilities in the room were broken and almost caused me my life. They overcharged me for several items, especially the doctor fees that they billed me everyday even though the doctor was on his day off and he didn't show up to see me in the patient room. I asked the doctor and what they told me was "It was my fault for not staying in the room when he came by"

Hello Thai visa friends,

Thanks for all your support through this site. We are back in our cozy home in the US. The kids love it here and life is much more comfortable in our own house of course. I want to let you know that we decided to wait and get our son's surgery done here in the USA instead of at Bungrungrad, Bangkok. I just didn't feel comfortable doing it there. Surgery was done 2 weeks ago in one of the leading children's hospital in USA and everything went perfect. Missing Chiang Mai especially, now that the weather is getting colder. Bathe in the sun and the heat for me.
