BANGKOK, Jan 23 – The caretaker government renewed its call for dialogue with protesters even as the Emergency Decree was invoked yesterday.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, in his capacity as chief adviser of the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order, said the government was ready to negotiate with protesters to find resolutions for peace under democratic process.

He said the US State Department has strongly condemned the outlawed activity in Thailand and called on the Thai government to take legal action against offenders.

The US has asked all factions to avoid violence and peacefully solve the problems under democratic system, said Mr Surapong.

He said the Centre and the prime minister will continue working at the office of the Permanent Secretary for Defence despite the blockade by protesters yesterday.

Meanwhile, Phra Buddha Issara who has led demonstrations on Chaengwattana Road said the authorities were attempting to seize the rally site and open the road to traffic.

He said protesters would not join others in their march in Bangkok in order to protect the Chaengwattana rally site from police seizure.

About 30 suspicious-looking young men mingled with protesters yesterday morning, confirming a report of police attempt to disperse the Chaengwattana site, said the Buddhist monk.

Protesters have enhanced security measures by putting up sand bags, rubber tyres and nets around the rally site. (MCOT online news)

Right... The Government issues an Emergency Decree with one hand and offers an olive branch to the protesters with the other. The latter is just PR crap. They want the latter in print as a record for perhaps something very nasty that's about to happen.

" He said the US State Department has strongly condemned the outlawed activity in Thailand and called on the Thai government to take legal action against offenders. "

Of course, Surapong is twisting this to his own satisfaction, as the statement from the US clearly walks a very diplomatic, ambiguous line. In truth, the United States knows full well what is happening here, as does Surapong. Of all the acquisitions that Thaksin wants, the media is the most valuable. Without a media to question their narrative of " gentle tolerance ", the administration can clamp down hard once the protesters find themselves under attack from a " third hand " - Thai-speak for " it has nothing to do with us ".

Caretaker government offers peace dialogue

BANGKOK: -- The caretaker government today renewed its call for dialogue with anti-government protesters despite that the state of emergency is still in force.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, in his capacity as chief adviser of the Center for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO), said the government is ready to negotiate with protesters to find resolutions for peace.

He cited the US State Department’s call which has strongly condemned the outlawed activity in Thailand and called on the Thai government to take legal action against offenders.

The US has asked all factions to avoid violence and peacefully solve the problems under democratic system, he said.

Surapong said the centre and the prime minister will continue working at the office of the Permanent Secretary for Defense despite the blockade by protesters yesterday.

"He cited the US State Department’s call which has strongly condemned the outlawed activity in Thailand and called on the Thai government to take legal action against offenders."

Why? Because The United States of America says so? How do they explain their position? (Democracy the way we like it.) Who is the outlaw here? I know who has been the outlaw for most of the modern world and it has been all been based on self interest. That reason sits well with the current government.

There is no preordained reason in heaven or on earth why the American government should suggest or dictate anything to anyone. Thailand and the US are natural bedfellows... but the people are tired of being screwed by both.

A post containing derogatory generalizations toward Thais has been removed as well as the replies containing that post. If you cannot post without spewing these derogatory generalizations, it may be time to back away from your key board.

7) Not to post slurs or degrading comments directed towards any group on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

8) Not to post extremely negative views of Thailand or derogatory comments directed towards all Thais.

which really shows how Surapong has twisted it to suit PTP. As if PTP really care what the USA say's anyway?

He said the US State Department has strongly condemned the outlawed activity in Thailand and called on the Thai government to take legal action against offenders.

Below is the actual U.S. State Dept statement a few days ago according to this news link.

"The United States strongly condemns increasing violence in Bangkok that has resulted in deaths and injuries. We urge Thai authorities to investigate these attacks and bring those responsible to justice. We urge all sides to refrain from violence, exercise restraint, and respect the rule of law.

"The United States supports democratic institutions and processes in Thailand, our long-time friend and ally. We encourage all involved to commit to sincere dialogue to resolve political differences peacefully and democratically."

Me thinks the full U.S. State Dept statement presents a different connotation than Khun Surapong's version of the statement. Wonder why Khun Surapong didn't mention the last sentence from the U.S. State Dept statement.

Because the Shin clan have been lying to the people for years. Since they have such a well oiled propaganda machine they get away with it.

Lot of well thought out and insighful posts today from the Coup side. All about appearance and nothing of substance.

US is firmly on side and you would only get to know just how much so if you staged the Coup.... You have to read US, Eurpoeran and Asian media to get a handle on this as Thai Media is firmly on Suhtps side.

They make it appear there is a massive body of opinion wanting the army in or yingluck, but there isn't . It's just that they control the Courts, EC, Media that make it look like this. Everybody else sees it different.

Nobody on the march today, and they had to time it to hit the office areas at lunch time to catch some office workers or there would have been nobody on the streets to watch it. Terrible small turn out in his supposed supprt base

NY Time article was picked up and gained legs and they really had a go at the EC. and if you want to make comments about appearance just look how dumb old Somchai looks in his. Nice Job Done by free media.

Of course nobody has come up with anything about the big question. "What then" if there is a coup? None of them can think that far and most are waiting for Suthep to tell them what to think and do!!!! Demanding a People council that will rob themselves of their vote and not allow them any input.. Sooooooooo educated are the Bangkok middle class looking now.

Are you suggesting if there was a coup that American soldiers will be on the streets of Bangkok, because that is what it sounds like?

If a Coup was to happen to overthrow extract remove depose (whatever you want to call It) PTP from office, as long as they give the reasons why (of which there are many) then I don't have a problem with it, in fact I find it quite a positive that the option is always there if a government is seen to be breaking so many rules laws and stealing so much money - it is almost a defacto part of Thai politics to remove a government that gets out of control

Until the constitution has enough safeguards written in to make it impossible for a government like PTP to go rogue I believe the coup option must remain and in most cases can be easily justified - I also think the word coup is a bit strong - the general belief of the word is that it is bad - I don't see it that way in Thailand provided it can be justified - in this case I believe it is.

PTP have only themselves to blame - the Thai people deserve better
