Dreams not sure, but after 14 years of working here with a good job, into my second relationship which is a thousand times better than what I had back home, l am pretty content. Sure I could do with more money, Bangkok has become more expensive, but food still great, weather for the mo is just cool, and I am writing this sipping a whiskey slouched on a bean bag on a beach in Samui.

Sure, we all curse the bad drivers, the protests in Bangkok and the Russian tourists, but I would be hard pressed to find a better place to live - I am well travelled and can't think better than Thailand. I consider myself very lucky to be here.

It would be even better if all the negative farangs left!

If you don't like it, you can always leave.

How come I'm the first one to say that? Everyone out spending their pension cheques? welcomeani.gif to Thailand.

Nah. Sometimes some people get stuck-minded, believe they can't leave, and let's be honest, wouldn't be happy anywhere so become very vocal about it. Pass the Prozac, please.

It is better living here than the nanny state .The nanny state ......dont do this , give me more tax , here is your fine for going 4 km over the speed limit . you are not paying enough tax etc etc etc .

Aw yes back in Canada...Vancouver rain..depressed people...women overweight...fast food every corner...all ya can eat buffet ( I do not go to here or back in Canada for the fact that one over eats and see others do the same) Taxes yes goods and services..ya pay tax on tax..for example the tax on say a used motorbike..it is taxed again...here in Thailand it is taxed once! Hospitals..emergency ward in Canada..for example Fort McMurray you have to wait 4 hrs to see a doctor...waiting along with oilworkers whom suffer serious injuries,...or screaming children by my side awaiting in Q.

Oh yes traffic..here I can swerve in and out of stalled cars..in canada it is a fine to pass a car in wait..the driver will honk or try later to run ya over as you took his spot in line of the many. I enjoy the change in being here...I can drive my motorbike the wrong way... or ignore the pedestrians wanting me to stop as they want to cross the road...I just go with the flow..thou back in Canada

I do have to follow the rules...one lie is to not submit my Thai driving license (I was stupid in informing the motor vehicle license office) for driving a scooter, as I could NOT have two drivers licenses...what is the problem my Cdn motor scooter is register in Cdn address and insurance to the rules...I could not write my motor scooter license without giving up my Thai motor drivers license...I talked to Victoria office and no way..ok...now think..aw let me photo copy and laminate the license and give this to officials...well I did it was questions if laminated I said no..do you have on record what a "Thai driver license looks like" no we do not..du well why do you want this from me? The MVL did accept my laminated and was allowed to write my practical...and have pass the examine and practical exam.

I still have the original license and proud that I held my ground on the non-logical to give up my Thai drivers license. I am one of the multi thousand of Japanese, Korean, Indian and Europeans whom have lied about their home country drivers licenses.

For me it's not all about Thailand. I was interested in relocating to SEA in general, focusing on affordable for my same lifestyle I had back in the US.

After 2 years I can't find much that would keep me specifically in Thailand much longer over other countries around like Vietnam or Laos, of even some South American options. The things I have pinpointed that would keep me here over other places are all vices. Things that are fun in the short term, but over time tend to have ill effects.

There are MANY types of 'security'. I don't mind the visa runs in exchange for the 'give up your freedoms for false security' back in the USA.

Is consenting sex between adults a vice?

The poll options are too restrictive. I've resided here 16 years, and first started visiting 33 years ago. It's a mixed bag, The biggest drawbacks are being ripped off (by a few hill tribers) and not being able to trust what a Thai says. I don't think there's a saying in Thai, "a man is as good as his word" (is there?). Lying is as accepted as corruption and tossing trash in parks. Sure there are good things I could list - most of which you know. I still go smiling and waving to folks, particularly children, and receive the same goodwill back, most of the time. I have many fulfilling projects here in northern Thailand, so that keeps me busy, and rather content. I wish Thais weren't all cut from the same cookie cutter. They all seem to think alike. I don't find that when I visit Burma. The Burmese seem to be able to think independently, and have a wider variety of characters/personalities. Their dogs don't bark near as much as Thai dogs either, ....no kidding. And the Burmese enjoy reading books.

If you're not paying high taxes in Thailand, then you must not;

1. Drink beer. 100% tax.

2. Own a car. 100% tax.

3. Eat western food. High taxes on anything 'foreign' even if it's made in Thailand.

4. Go to bars (cop payments come out if beer sales)

And really if you're going to live without those things, anywhere would be cheap except certain major cities with crazy rent like NY or London.

Not one person out of 100 said "I hate my life." I find that impossible, considering all the people I've met over the years. Maybe TV is more positive than the norm.

I needed another option, "I love Thailand a few days a week, bored one day, tired one day, super excited 3-4 days, and lost for a period of indeterminate time."

When in America, let me think....."Happy at least 1/2 of every day, exhausted a few hours a day, super excited 1-2 days a week, bored a few hours a day, and a few hours spent trying not to be the sheep and become the lion." There is stress in both places. relationships very similar. money important both places. i do like having water whenever i want it, and clean air.

ah, more experiences are good. unless they kill you.

Yep, I love it.

Sure, there are a few minor things that irritate me but there are many things that irritate me in Australia (although they got rid of two of those irritations around and at the time of the last Federal election) but even so, I much prefer my retirement here in CNX.

Our house is our own, same as in Oz, just as nice as the house in Oz, cost of living is much more agreeable in CNX, our daughter goes to her Mom's Old School, which just happens to be one of the Best in Thailand and life is Magnificent!

Living here suits me, my only drawback, is the ''Driving Standards' apart from that i am happy......

Guess you never drove in Rome, Paris' London, or any large city in the US.........I find that Thai's are gentle people, 'Until you put anything under them with wheels on it'............and I learned to adapt. Life is simple, I just get out of their way, and after over 20+ years of driving in LOS, never an accident, unless you count the Motorcycle drivers hitting their helmet on the side view mirror on my american pickup truck.cheesy.gif

Man, my answer is changing day by day.

Today I love it, tomorrow I will hate, ...... as every-where in the globe.

I agree the poll is bad. Why can't it be 'rate how much you agree with each statement.' It would add some dimensionality.

Can't we just link to a poll server that does what we want then post updates as time passes along with the url?
