Planning on hiring a car and doing a long drive CM to BKK and onto Prachaup Kiri Khan and am wondering what car to choose. There will be 4 of us, 2 kids and 2 adults plus some 3 medium to large suitcases and a buggy.

The options are the above plus a 4 door Vigo cab with the roof part on the back.

The CR-V looks good but I'm wondering what is the more comfortable drive and practical. I'm guessing the Vigo will be diesel so that will work out cheaper on a long drive, but not sure about the Fortuner and CR-V or what the fuel efficiency of any of these car/trucks are since I'm not really a car person.

Would welcome any comments and recommendations.

Thanks

Vigo and Fortuna are in essence the same vehicle - the Fortuna has a petrol option (maybe the Vigo too?) Both are available as 2 and 4 wheel drive.

The Honda will have the best ride of the 3......... check it will take the buggy.

The rear seats on the pickup are slightly less leggy than the Fortuna but with kids that shouldn't be a problem.

The Diesels can be quite thirsty - they are big vehicles - but diesel is subsidised in Thailand to about 30 baht, petrol is about 40 baht.

If you are going to use unmetalled roads the Vigo and pickup will have better ground clearance,

If the CRV would have a diesel engine then it would be the perfect choice, it feels more like a car than the Fortuner, quite comfy, nicer Interior.

But I would opt. for the Fortuner, more power, cheaper to run, more room for stuff.

But whatever you choose, both will be up to the task and you won´t make a mistake chosing either one. The Vigo? Nope, not for the family trip.

The fortuner would beal with a heavier load better than the crv, but as other's have said, it will be more comfortable. I think the crv will cost a bit more to run but not by a significant margin. I's get a 2.4 crv if they are available. Bit more power than the 2.0.

The fortuner and diesels in general arent that thirsty cruising long distance, its in urban traffic that they drink heavily. The crv will have better driving characteristics and offer a more sedan like ride, if i was packing a lot of weight on my trip then i would rent the fortuner and take out the rearview obscuring 3rd row seats and you now have a cavernous boot.

I drive a CRV now and find the ride nice and soft. How's the ride in the Fortuna? Hard like the Vigi?

No, the Fortuner has coil spring rear suspension and is shorter, Vigo has leaf. I drive a 4x4 Vigo and have driven a new Fortuner. They ride differently, not much difference on a motorway (nice road). In fact the Vigo auto is very comfortable on ''nice roads''. Remember both these rides are designed to do a job, take you anywhere where a saloon cannot go.

1 CRV

2 Fortuner

3 Vigo not an option for me

Please consider the security offered by the car (airbags, etc), Thailand roads are especially very dangerous

8 Years ago I owns a CRV, a very comfortable car, after a Vigo because the diesel engine, in Thailand there is no CRV-diesel unfortenatly, only in Europe as far as I know. Now I drive a Fortuner diesel 3.0 ltr and average 1 ltr/12km. But when you ask me wat is the best experience, defenatly the CRV!

I rented a 4 door and 4WD Vigo with an enclosed or covered bed from Avis before for a trip to Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai and into Issan. My experience is that even main highways tend to be in poor condition and when travelling at highway speeds it is good to have a truck based vehicle to absorb the bumps and potholes along with the security of more steel around you. The drawback is the 4 door Vigo is large when you are in town it can be cumbersome in traffic and for parking. In that regard the Fortuner may be a better option as it is somewhat smaller. Also went on a long trip in a Honda City and did not like it on the highway but good for town driving.

A car is a car... I cant believe people are talking about leaf springs etc... moronic!

Get the car with the best deal, insurance package etc... Surely you dont need someone to tell you that?
