Wondering if I should "loose" my passport and get a new one (Canada) or not. I want to apply for the retirement visa, I meet all the qualifications, but I already have a multiple entry tourist visa, an education visa and an expired work visa in my passport.

I have broken no laws in thailand, always kept a valid visa or work permit but I don't want all the stamps and such in my passport to make it harder for me to get the retirement visa. I am in Canada now, have been out of Thailand for a little over a year and will apply for the retirement visa here.

Any one know about this situation.

thanks

No.

Having a multiple entry tourist visa, an education visa and an expired work visa in your passport will have no effect on your application for a retirement visa if you meet all the requirements for it.

the thought of it is tempting, and if you plan to have a new passport with lots of free pages issued anyways ( the subsequent renewals, entry stamps and extensions of a Non Imm O-A visa on retirement purposes are going to take up space!) then do it !

It is true that immigration officers sometimes cannot resist to scroll through and check back and forth between recent and older visas and stamps, I have often twiddled thumbs at their offices waiting for them to end giving my passport a scrutinizing review. So the OP is actually touching a psychological factor.

Of course, in LEGAL SENSE, all your stamps and back to back visa runs and ED visas are no reason to refuse you an retirement visa if they were all in line with the requirements.

When does your passport expire? If soon. it might be better if you just apply for a new one, but there's no need to loose it. In the US you can apply for a new one far in advance of the expiration of the old one as long as you "fork over" the money.

No need to "loose" the passport", just apply for a visa. Never a good thing to loose your passport and it would require making a false statement to the police, which is a criminal offense. (As a general comment, it is always better to forget the passport while doing the laundry, then you haven't lost it with all attached problems and still require a new passport).

If you want a non-O visa instead of the O-A visa be sure to apply at one of the honorary consulates in Canada.

Now is good time to get a new one. You will not have a problem getting it 2 years early.

In Canada the passport must be within one year of expiring to apply for a new one.

I don't know about how early you can apply for a new paspsort in Canada, but often there are good grounds to get a new passport earlier. For instance when you have to travel to both Iran and Israel peole often get a second passport. So do inquire with the paspsort authorithy.

But I see no problem with your current passport.

Take allyour papers with you to the consulate and apply. The fact that youhave been in and out of the cuntry is good for you as it shows youknow what you are getting into. The problem withmany stamps is the ed visa not the retirement visa.

I think if your passport is full they would have to issue you another one since Canadian passports cannot have pages added. Governments should never tempt their citizens to accidentally (on purpose) lose or damage their passports. Policies that encourage such behavior are bad policies.

A good reason to renew the passport. To get a retirement extension in Thailand, a minimum passport validity of 18 months is required.

You don't need 18 months remaining on a passport to get an extension of stay. There is no minimum validity requirement to get one. But one year is advised because anything less will result in an extension of less than one year now.

Actually they changed that requirement recently and require the passport validity to be no less than than the length of the extension. That is, a one year extension requires the passport to be valid for one year at the time of application for the extension.

They will still do the extension with less than a year but it will only be valid up to the expiration date of the passport.

Before they would give you the remainder of the extension when you got a new passport but now you have to apply for a new extension.

Ubonjoe gave the correct answer. The extension of stay will not be longer than the validity of the passport. So with a passport validity of 2 years you still get an extension of 1 year, but with a passport validity of 6 month you only get an extension of stay for 6 months. In the mean time you get a new passport and than apply for a new 1 year extension of stay.

You are wrong, I just received an extension of stay until Dec. 21 2014 the day my passport expires. I did have to sign a document that I understood I would need to re-apply for a new extension of stay after receiving my new passport. This was about 10 days ago.

You must be aware before you make this decison of the reaction of the Canadian passport office. Any lost or stolen passport can not be replaced without a valid police report and a notarized affidavit regarding the circumstances of the passport going astray. That will be two counts oif criminal offences hanging over you. Then the Canadian passport office will treat you with great suspicion, as if you had sold your passport to terrorists. It is is not a pleasant experience.

If granted a new passport, and it is by no means a certainty, it will have the passport number appended with phrasing such as " this passport replaces passport # xxxxx which was allegedly lost ". This will be there for Thailand Immigration to read and question.

I had my passport stolen and went through all of this plus a half hour 'grilling' by two Canadian passport officers to investigate my claims, My passport was eventually replaced after about 3 weeks of waiting and wondering.

Get a retirement visa!

Very easy - uncomplicated - 50yo, B800k on deposit (or in accordance with pension requirements) & that is about it. Yearly extensions & 3 monthly visits to the local Immigration Office in Thailand. See the Thai Embassy/consulate in your home country.

You don't need to 'lose' your passport. Especially if you are short of free pages. Just apply for a new (48 page) one through normal channels.

Passport Canada will void the old one and issue a new one. I know, because I have done it when I got too short of free pages.

That must be a new rule, because I renewed mine with 3 years left. But then, I was running out of pages.

Do you have an e-passport? If not that is a valid reason to get it early. See: http://www.ppt.gc.ca/support/faq.aspx?lang=eng&id=q865

I think getting a long term visa and moving abroad could also be a valid reason..

I suggested getting it now because of the visa and needing a new one in less than a year and a half any way. It is a lot less trouble to get one in Canada than here.

I had no issues getting my passport renewed in Bangkok. The biggest issue was the need for references in lieu of sponsor (or whatever they call it). I used 4 Thai girls I know. That did raise some eyebrows, and they actually did call them all. But as I have known the girls for 5 plus years, everything went fine. But it was worth a chuckle.

whistling.gif In my experience, at least for a retirement extension/visa. immigration will pay no attention to you're other entries into Thailand.

If they do ask, simply say correctly, that before you reached the age of 50 (retirement visa age) it was more difficult to get visas to visit and stay in Thailand.

That's why you are now applying for a retirement extension.

But, as long as you meet the requirements, I doubt they will even ask.

They've seen it all before, and they already know exactly why you want that retirement visa/extension.
