Other sources were telling that he was taken to the hospital with an ambulance (40 minutes drive with police escort) as hes condition was not good enough to take him with a helicopter.

I think it was weather conditions not safe enough Visibility wise for an air lift

Because air lift is usually used for some of the most extreme injuries that makes sense.

I think the main problem with this is 1st given that turn a Safety Car should have come out

before a rescue tractor was allowed there to recover Sutils car

Mika Salo, who was driver member at race jury said to Finnish media that the pictures he saw showed that Jules's car went straight under the tractor and that Jules had a heavy hit to the head.

Jules Bianchi's father has told French television that his son is in a critical condition following his crash at the Japanese Grand Prix this morning.

The Marussia driver collided with a recovery vehicle which was removing Adrian Sutil's Sauber from the side of the track after the German had run wide in wet conditions.

According to France 3 television, the 25-year-old's father has said that the driver is undergoing surgery for head trauma, and that he is in a critical condition.

Well Lewis had a better day at the office, but the Jules thing has subdued his victory.

Hope Jules is not hurt as bad as some are suggesting, though you have to question the wisdom of wheeling out a few tons of solid steel until the all the drivers have passed and are aware of the incident.

Well no doubt after investigation there will be more rules and restrictions, maybe they will now put a lot of flashing lights on the removal cranes.

This does not look good.

Much of top rear etc looks sheered off as well as the scrapes across the top front deck

suggest car may have gone under that tractor.

Hope he is ok & pulls thru

Given the conditions the safety car should have been out as soon as the crane was deployed. However hind sight is a wonderful thing

True but also many times when the SC comes out drivers gaped will take the opportunity to speed up & close gaps

while remaining in Que

Sutil said under dbl yellow he saw many going by at what looked like full speeds.

I think the main mistake today was to bring out that tractor before things were suitably sorted.

They go thru all the trouble of making tire barriers etc then bring a tractor in front of it in rain while cars are still circulating

Look at Silverstone when Raikkonen hit that guardrail...They not only stopped things but made everyone wait till rail was fixed in case another car did a 1 in a 1000

chance hit in same spot.

In any case I hope Jules does ok & they learn something from all of this too.

Yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing, "Sutil said under dbl yellow he saw many going by at what looked like full speeds.", FIA need to investigate if drivers could see the double yellows given the track conditions.

Who authorised the tractor? is it not up to race control to authorise deployment? anyone do the simplest of risk assessments? as pointed out at Silverstone they red flagged the race until the barrier was repaired, I think we can see an issue with inconsistent standards of safety here.

On the DBL Yellows doesn't the drivers get the flashing yellow lights on steering wheel too?

I am not sure but just wondered

Remember a few years ago in Brazil even the rain master himself piled into all the other wrecks.....

no matter how many lights are flashing on top of water you have no control your a passenger..

Massa screaming over the radio the Race should be stopped a few laps before, should the safety car have already been out ?

Alex was saying the safety car should have been out before the lifting machinery. That way the situation should have been under control.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and you are totally correct...

But some people thought at the time that was not needed, or there was total F-Up in communications.

What I see now is the safety car coming out when really not required or races red flagged because everybody is afraid to take a sensible decision.

i am sure the decision to bring the race forward was vetoed by the F1 commercial rights holder, not for the reason that many fans would not be able to get to the race in time but for the fact they would lose a lot of money from live televised broadcasts.
