Three boys killed in insurgency attack in Yala

YALA: -- Three Muslim boys were killed when they and their parents returned from praying at a mosque in this restive southern border province Monday night.

Col Pramote Prom-in, the spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command Area 4, said Tuesday that the attack happened at 8:15 pm in Moo 7 village in Tambon Palu Kasamoh in Ba Cho district.

Pramote said the family was attacked with assault rifles.

Muya-ed Maman, 11, Bahari Maman, 9 and Issayas Maman, 6, were killed. Their parents, Jehmu Maman and Padila Maman, were severely injured.

Pramote said the Fourth Army Area commander was sorry for the loss and would cooperate with the government agencies concerned to provide compensation for the family.

The Fourth Army Area Commander should take one from one of the surviving family members of the fallen, that might make it almost about right !

Pusillanimous reporting by the Nation. There will be a price to pay and, as always, it will be the innocent who pay the price. The situation in Yala and neighbouring provinces could get very bad because of this.

The headline suggests the boys were murdered by an insurgency group, so either an informer in the family or some form of dispute or is it inaccurate & they were killed by Thai security forces?

The Thai government has established a fund to provide compensation for civilian victims of insurgency attacks in the deep South. Roughly triple the amount for civilian victims proven to be killed by Thai security forces, but very challenging to hold Thai security forces accountable.

Army condemns Narathiwat attack killing 3 kids

NARATHIWAT, Feb 4 - The Thai army today condemned Monday's shooting attack by insurgents which claimed the lives of three children in this restive southern border province and pledged to bring the assailants for prosecution for their "inhuman killing".

Col Pramote Prom-in, spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4, today expressed condolences to the Maman family as presumed insurgents fired a hail of bullets outside their home in Bacho district last night.

Three children, aged 6, 9 and 11 years old, were killed, while their parents, identified as Chemu Maman, 40 and his wife Padeela Maeyu, 33, were wounded.

The Maman family was returning home after performing a religious rite at a local mosque. They were reaching their home when an unknown number of gunmen fired at them.

Col Pramote said the Army Region 4 commander also expressed deep regrets for the incident and instructed concerned agencies to provide assistance to rehabilitate the victims' family at their full capacity.

He said the army and police are now hunting suspects and will take them for legal prosecution as their action is deemed violent and inhuman. (MCOT online news)

yes, once again we see these big brave insugents fighting for their lives against unarmed children, how proud they must be to be able to murder little kids with their automatic weapons to show everyone how big their balls are. When will the thai army simply go in and shoot these pathetic terrorists that hide behind innocent people, the time for retribution has well and truly passed but we have a govt that is not capable of giving the order needed to stop this crap.

Three young brothers shot dead in south Thailand

NARATHIWAT, February 4, 2014 (AFP) - Three brothers including a three-year-old have been shot dead in Thailand's violence-plagued deep south and their pregnant mother injured, police said Tuesday.

The boys, aged three, five and nine, were gunned down after returning from evening prayers Monday at a mosque in a volatile district of Narathiwat, one of three Muslim-majority southern provinces blighted by a decade-long insurgency.

Their pregnant mother and father were also shot in the attack but survived, according to police in Bacho district.

Colonel Pramote Promin, southern region military spokesman, said he could not confirm if the deaths were related to the rebellion against Thai rule.

"We have to wait for the police investigation. But society must condemn the perpetrators of this incident," he added.

Local media reports said gunmen sprayed the Muslim family's remote home with bullets, wounding the boys who died later in hospital.

More than 5,900 people -- the majority of them civilians -- have been killed in the conflict waged by shadowy insurgents seeking greater autonomy from Buddhist-majority Thailand, which annexed the region a century ago.

Around 40 people have been killed in the restive region so far this year, according to monitors Deep South Watch.

Dozens of children have been killed either by insurgents or security forces since the start of the bloodshed in 2004, prompting the United Nations to call for an end to violence against youngsters in the region.

Mental health workers in the south say children are increasingly showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder -- including anger, introversion and fear -- caused by living in the conflict zone.

Local authorities say there are more than 5,000 orphans across the three southern provinces.

The roots of the insurgency draw on long-standing anger at Thailand's efforts to assimilate ethnic Malay Muslims and at a perceived lack of respect for local language, religion and customs.

Peace talks between some rebel groups and Thai authorities have hit the buffers as ongoing political turmoil in Bangkok preoccupies the government.
Rebels, including those from the shadowy Barisan Revolusi Nasional which is believed to command many of the grassroots fighters, have made a series of demands so that peace talks can continue.

As yet there has not been a full response from the Thai side.

#is it inaccurate & they were killed by Thai security forces?#

That's an entirely baseless assumption, though I agree it doesn't seem accurate to call an insurgency attack, at least from what little we know here in the TV detective booth. A reprisal killing, or a murder related to organized crime seem two other possibilities. I doubt very much that Thai security forces literally left their base and killed three people then reported back.

My first question would be ....

Why would Muslim insurgents kill a very probably obvious Muslim family on the way home from prayer ? This makes no sense whatsoever.

The Thai forces have killed thousands in that region over the years, operations both overt and covert. Im keeping an open mind but its not a shia vs sunni region and far as I know the insurgents are not known for killing a family of Muslims ... it could be mistaken identity but on the way back from payer would be pretty obvious they were Muslim and not Buddhist.

RIP little ones

You never know if some of these killings are contract extraducial/gang killings gone wrong. However, today reported that the father of the murdered children had been accused of killing an assistant to a local member of the Tambon administration over a dispute, he was freed on bail awaiting trial. It is claimed the attack was an act of revenge with the terrible consequence of the death of his three children.

As we know these dispute/revenge killings occur throughout Thailand.
