My hunch is, in the end all you old coots go back home. You seek out some family member who can care for you or at leadt manage the care for you. You get all that "free" socialist healthcare and you die with some sad and vague memory of the time some pretty woman paid attention to you conveniently forgetting - you paid for it.

I paid for all my best memories.

Diving in Egypt, Israel, Malta, South of France, Plymouth.

Skiing in Verbier, Lake Tahoe, Jasper, Banff

Doing the ancient stuff, in Israel, Jorden, Egypt, Tunisia.

Trying think of any "best memories" I didn't pay for ........

My best memories don't really include sexual escapades, free or purchased.

But if sex ever becomes part of that set, I'm thinking the paid encounters will be in the top 10.

I could see my wife and self going back to states for a year. She has been a few times and will go a few more, but she wants the experience of living in the US. I have no idea where we would go. I hate So CA now, NW is gloomy, east coast is ok but meh. The South, not really. Especially Texas <deleted>. The rest is landlocked. The SW is great for a few months at a time. Think maybe I would buy a car and just camp everywhere for a year. I'm too old to go back and start my dream lifestyle. Living off the grid, permaculture...Owning property freaks me out, its so permanent.

Most of you are old geezers. Old, but most importantly unhealthful. Thailand is your last gasp. You never had a bucket list, so Thailand is just a catchall. Mainly pussy. For UK and EU mongers Thailand makes sense, closest fleshpot. US has Central and South America, most Yanks down there, but Thailand has its own appeal that is not Argentina and much of South America is truly dangerous (and some getting better).

I have serious issues with buying anything here, but this is where the wife will die (myself as well). So maybe about 72++. US has some great property deals, but we could never live there. I would not want m

y wife also to deal with selling property in US after I am gone. No idea what that might hold.

Most of you truly have one foot in the grave. The rest of us need to think where will Thailand be in 30 years. I see Philippines, not Singapore. Better conditions because unlike stupid Philippinos, Thai use birth control.

The only thing holding this magic together is depressed wages. Cartels and monopolies push prices and labor down. Great for those at the top and tourists. This can disappear easily in a number of ways.

There are a few countries I would like to live in and many trips I want to make before I kick my heels up in Thailand and kill myself. Luckily, I married an adventurer. I plan on doing that before I come to Thailand and declare my life finished thank you.

We have about ten years of seeing what is left of this awesome planet before it's gone and my health precludes mountain climbing and jungle trekking.

You are all here because it's cheap. No harm in that I guess. You certainly not here for the food.

Who knows the future, even with a Thai wife I'm not married to Thailand. I have been here long enough to know what it is and is not. It is not a good investment, nor an ultra long play.

If you think it is greasy now, politics a mess and visas tedious. Well, you are in for a bumpy retirement because nothing looks like it is going to get better in the decade ahead.

Every one of you go on about how you love it here, blah blah. Few have real committment.

Who knows, maybe both of us will return to US to suck off the govt Medicare teet. Get us some of that Fox News Obama socialism. Bwah.

So bitter, how did you get that way? Some of us are quite pleased with our choices.
even i am not a memebr of the older bigade i always think to quit your live here is a good decision compared to europe( no clue about the life in the USandA). even if you just have a few years left to go,go with a smile enjoy it as long as you can.better to live here on a small pension pretty well than like a bagger in the EU and if you get laid from time to time even better- overseas no chance.is Thailand a paradise? no for sure not but an enjoyable alternative especialy not as retyieree you don't have to deal with the daily crap.

What I read here:

♥ There is not so much professed love for Thailand, but rather a few reasons you feel* you can't return. Oh, but you can, and you will.

Most of you on TV arrive old and retired. Retired from work and retired from life.

You don't like the cold

You can't get any tail

It's too expensive

This is the TV expat. Let's be honest, it's been stated a dozen times in this thread.

I might not like the way you say most of the other stuff you've written but I suspect that few will deny the veracity of the above.

we are all here for the culture, the temples & the food, right ?

yes, yes, nudge nudge, BUT, no matter what you hope to emphasize backhandedly by omission for whatever reasons, you ARE there for the general ambience, including 'the culture, the temples and the food'.....

Last week I had to return to the UK for a family funeral. It was my first visit in 7 years, (and my previous visit was just for 2 days for another funeral).

So basically, I had not spent any time in the UK since 2002.

The funeral took place in the city where I was born and raised - Leicester.

I had time to walk round the city, see my old school, the suburban house where I lived as a kid, the market, the streets, the people.

I have to say that it was a major shock to my system! I sometimes moan about living in Thailand, but I will never moan again after seeing how Leicester had become a dreary, grey city inhabited by every type of non-English speaking person on the planet. (Actually, it was always like that...)

I also realised as I headed for the airport that this visit would likely be the last in my lifetime to Old Blighty. As a place to make home, Leicester cannot compare with Phuket smile.png

...good to hear your view, gives some reassurance, as am still hedging at taking the plunge....

Which way? Emigrate to Thailand or return to the home country?

Oh, emigrate to Thailand....I mean I live in Glasgow, and have a recently- arrived-from-Greece-new neighbour, lady, who apart from the weather, thinks this country amazingly wonderful in terms of the cost of living, the infrastructure and the general stability.....but I'm much older (almost 70), and the weather IS awful, as is the spirit of John Calvin puitanism....and the consequent complete lack of opportunity to just trawl around all day, if so desire, and be a bit more open and outgoing than is just practically possible in current environs......I don't drink or smoke or use drugs (got the T-shirt), but my health is reasonable-it should continue thus if I continue to eat intelligently and keep up the yoga practice have developed over last few years....but your now getting my life story.....as I said in another post, you take yourself with you wherever you go, but to call on Karl Marx, I didn't CHOOSE the circumstances in which I made my own history;okay I could have escaped, but actually I couldn't.....now I can, but am so used to the Nanny State, i.e.that one which has partially contributed to my ability to escape, that am afeard to try....AND am not looking for some young, or ANY age, babe, to change my life/bring me 'happiness', etc , happiness comes from within.....okay I'll just stay here!!!!

I gotta agree with you man. If you are into Calvinism and think happiness comes from within like, self gratification, Thailand is entirely unnecessary. This is a very social place. Say hi to folks walking down the street or wave while riding your elephant to work.

I have been in SE Asia, Australia and New Zealand since 1995, but 80% of the time in Thailand. I was born in London in 1953. I still have property in East London and Torbay, Devon. I can't wait to go back home. I am sick of the sun and the lack of any aesthetically pleasing counrtyside. Everywhere here is the same, when you travel its like a hamster on a wheel, very boring. If all you want to do is drink beer and sit outside a bar looking for girls, then, yes, Thailand is great, Philippines even better for that. However, I am a day person and an outdoor person. I rarelt imbibe alcohol and the girls here really bore me stupid. Anyway, It is just too hot. In April I am returning to UK permanantly. I was there for 6 months last summer and one month in December last year,, I was so happy there. Yes, I am financially solvent, I retired when I was 41, and I just love it back in England. I'm going home !!

I have been in Asia since 1990, no way to I want to go home.

Everywhere is the same, sorry far from it, get your sorry ass down to Chan, helps if you can actually speak and read Thai of course.

Not interested in girls or bars, its hard enough trying to find an a/c snooker hall.

Phillipines, gimme a break what a effin shithole.

The girls bore you stupid, can you actually speak to them in their language?

Sound more like another cash strapped coffin dodger.

Best you move to a ground floor room asap.

Are you able to read ? Travelling around this country everything looks the same with a few exceptions.

Philippines is an effin shithole yes, I agree, but I stated if ALL you want is booze and birds........ far better than here.

Yes, the girls here so boring, and yes I can speak Thai and Laos quite fluently. I don't know you, but the chances are that my grasp of the language is far better than yours. In general I have no problem speaking Thai or Laos. Often, expecialy females, hate it because my Thai is so good and they REALLY hate it when I speak Laos to them. They don't realise why themselves, but it is because they can't control me and lead me around everywhere. I had one girl say I was Kee nok (Worthless) and why? When asked she explained it was because I can speak Laos. hahahahahah !

Cash strapped, hahahaha another hilarious comment. I have property in the Centre of the East end in London and two lovely properties in Torbay.

I have other assets too. No, money really isn't a problem for me, except what to spend it on.

I may kill myself from boredom here but never because of money. so so funny !

Mayber it is you that has all these problems. You have to stay here so you force yourself to like the place, where are you ? Pattaya LOL

You or I may not care to admit it, we have more in common than we care to admit.

Conratulations on your language ability, I have never got beyond "pasat klang" it serves most places in Thailand, never had the need or urge to learn pasat lao reu Issan.

I am not so insecure or suffer from such low self esteem as to admit to my properties in good old bligthy, or my other holdings.

Like you I could leave this country tomorrow without so much as as backwards glance.

Before leaving I would like to congratulate the Indian girl who was working in the HSBC in Silom Rd years ago, the same girl who pointed me in the the direction of Aberdeen trusts when the SET was about 250..

Best of luck to you, at least you have the option of leaving, most I come across head back home for the following reasons, contract finished (dragged kicking and screaming to the airport), kids education, or run out of money.

Pattaya, you couldnt pay me to live in that place, head further East to Chan.

As mentioned before I have been out of the Facist EU for too long now, I speak like a dinosaur, dont belong back there.

Best of luck to you.

There is a lot of truth in these statements. I came here very young ( late 70s) started earning money and decided to invest in property in London to move there to educate my daughter and to retire there..yes I have Always thought that Thailand is NOT a place for retirement and certainly not a place for older folks or to educate your children.

Thailand was then and is now a place for the young.

It's quite a boring place and as mundane as any other when it is and has been your home for most of your adult life. It's the friends that make it what it is and the life style you have.

I am no longer married, but a good wife as well. But that is very rare here..

If I had to live on a small income I would be out of here like a shot.Thailand can be a callous society and one which defines you by your wealth.

It is very difficult to meet the right women when you are older..

Of course everything changes over time, good international schools, good hospitals, better cable, great football and sports coverage, easier travel etc..plenty of work opportunities across Asia, so everything was here what I thought I would need to go home for.

As for the cash strapped coffin diggers, not very eloquent but I agree they shouldn't be here and ever more evident that a lot do not want to or can't go home even though the land of smiles isn't all that it seems.

As for talking to bar girls in their language, uneducated to the point of stupidity..bore the crap out of anyone..after a awhile..my pet Guinea pig has more personality..it was great fun once but not now..

What concerns me is that something must be wrong in the west that so many lonely, almost desperate old men come to Thailand end up with some of these girls that treat them like crap.. !!

Or others that state Thailand is perfect ignoring the obvious..

That alone, man, you hit it on the head. clap2.gif

May I just add "deliberately" ignoring. Simple because the NEED to ignore, to avoid to frustrate themselves over reality. Usually the case for people they find (as long as they have enough money left) - Thailand as a last resource to overcome their inability to live a decent social life.

How many times do I hear, "ah, c'mon, Thailand is still the best place to be; bars and girls everywhere". I hear that even from the "professional expats", who are in Thailand by "overseas (not)working" conditions.

Everyone who finds Thailand as a great place, always falls back on the "Easy Sex" in Thailand. That will never change!

If it was for intellectual, social and life qualities, not "one" clear minded person would even consider this country!

Thailand is a place for people:

  • who are ready to place their brain into a drawer, and never pick it up again,
  • who need to be here to carry out their scam ideas,
  • to carry on with their internet crimes, without interference,
  • who are sex addicts in any way
  • in short, all people who are not wanted in a good functional society

So sure, folks, you'll all love it here in Thailand. Stay on there, we don't want you back home!

Take the total number of people that fall into the category you're talking about.

Then take the total that visit here for the purposes NHT is talking about.

You honestly think the ratio is anywhere higher than 1:100?

I think more like 1:1000

But for me, no problem, only those that are actually hurting others are bad, and of course they exist everywhere.

People choosing to amuse themselves however they like if they're not hurting others, live and let live, wherever they choose to live.

I'm in the UK now: it's expensive, it's unstable (economically, no matter what the 'spin' you read). The UK is a damp squib, it's managed decline, surviving but doing so in a kind of retreat - accepting worsening conditions. I know Thailand's hot and stuffy for most of the year, but I'll take those tired torpor afternoons at 2.54pm standing outside a dusty 7-11 in Siracha wondering what the fuc_k I'm doing holding a big 2 litre bottle of coke and shrimp-flavoured crisps.....for trying to make a living in the UK and steadily moving backwards regardless. Anyway, I miss those 7-11 moments.
