Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair to be held from Feb 25 to Mar 1

BANGKOK, 13 February 2014 (NNT) – The Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair 2014 will take place between February 25th and March 1st at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, during which both Thai and foreign entrepreneurs will be showcasing their latest jewelry products.

The Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair will be held for the 53rd time despite the ongoing political unrest. The event organizer has revealed that there will be more than 3,000 booths exhibiting gem and jewelry products made in Thailand and overseas.

According to the organizer, last year’s event was a big success, as over 30,000 people visited the fair. Despite the political crisis, it is believed that this year’s fair will help mirror Thailand's positive images to other nations, building confidence among foreign investors and tourists.

The organizer further revealed that Thailand in 2012 exported 410 billion baht worth of gems and jewelry, while last year’s figure plunged to 350 billion baht, indicating that the industry had been heavily affected by the ongoing protests.

Songkhla Public Health Office campaigns against infectious diseases and unwanted pregnancy

BANGKOK, 13 February 2014 (NNT) — The Songkhla Public Health Office is holding a campaign against infectious diseases and unwanted pregnancy during Valentine’s season.

Under its campaign “true love means protection”, the Songkhla Public Health Office is campaigning for youths and the general public in the province to use protection when engaging in sexual activities in order to prevent the spread of HIV, STD, and unwanted pregnancy.

Head of the Songkhla Provincial Public Health Office, Dr. Sirichai Leewannaphasai, stated that the campaign is a part of the Public Health Ministry's policy to educate youths on using protection.

Moreover, he pointed out that those who have not been educated with family planning or sex education run the risk of catching STD and unwanted pregnancies. Statistics have shown that since 1988 until 2013, there have been 1,204 AIDS related deaths in Songkhla, where labor workers are those who are most at risk.

In 2014, an increase of 8.52% in HIV infections among people aged between 20 - 24 years old has been reported. Therefore, in an attempt to stop these figures from rising, Dr. Sirichai said the best way is to use protection during sex.
