Why is everyone all of a sudden driving me home?

Always amazes me that when I want to walk somewhere (shop, visit, discover, exercise...) the GF, her familly, Thai friends, passers by, will mobIlize as if I had just said I was walking to North Korea with a mission. Motorcycs will rev up, pick up trucks will cut my path, an escort will start to form...

I just wanted a quiet walk in the glorious morning light, and fresh coffee.

Yes here walking is akin to climbing up escalator stairs.

OR... maybe they just don't want to loose their meal ticket whistling.gif

SORRY just couldn't help myself wai2.gif

I have known this happen to a colleague on more than one occasion, and it seems that the owner of the bar is just doing a good deed as a thank you for his custom.

On a more serious note, my instincts and paranoia have never let me down !! The OP "feels" there is something "amiss", it does not feel "normal". Until proven otherwise, take care...

Better a live idiot than a dead fool IMHO. In this country people have been shot and killed over bird singing competitions or other stupid and trivial events. Just because you don't know you have upset someone doesn't mean you haven't. The locals however will probably know.

When you ask them why (they want you to ride with them) and you get "mai pen rai" try answering with "pen, phomm mai roo, mai kao jai" or (from the Thai person) "it doesn't matter", (from you) "matter I don't know, I don't understand" I know it's "pigeon Thai", but (hopefully) you will get a response, whether it is true or not I don't know. I do think you can tell things from peoples body language, to a degree anyway.

As I said before this probably depends a lot on where you are living too...

A bar yes, a mom and pop corner store or a 7 / 11, Nah.

The OP isn't telling us if these 2 stores are just Mom and Pop stores, I thought in one post he mentioned a 7 / 11, and that's not "normal", the girls would never leave the store (unless it's REALLY late at night and they fancy him). He isn't telling us where he lives or how far he has to walk (is it a long way).

To many if's, but's and maybe's. He obviously doesn't feel comfortable about it...... or why would he post?

Perhaps you should go back and read post #9

"These are just your typical family owned mom & pop shops"

Best get burglar bars if you don't have them - it all about knowing more about you and gossiping to the point everyone knows where you live and its a free-for-all to come and clean out your house

Just dropped in to see how long it would take for someone to turn this topic into a slight against Thais ('someone wants to kill you', 'they just want money from you', etc.). I wasn't disappointed...

Yes the paranoia.

Not saying petty crime like housebreaking doesn't happen, personally I make sure my house is always occupied, no need to lock the doors if someone's always home.

But no way the shopkeepers giving him a lift is them casing the joint, no way.

Anyway they eventually got use to me and would just drive by smiling or fingering me as they went by.

That's a little TOO familiar for my taste - and doesn't it hurt?

First of all, it's a good thing. thumbsup.gif The Thais are so helpful, they bend over backwards to help. So relax and not think too much. In addition, it could have something to do with the demonstrations in the city.
