when I get to the "run" box, it asks me if it is OK to make changes on the computer. Not only do I NOT want changes on my computer, I don't want Google Chrome or to make it my default. I think I figured out how to not get Chrome, but what does it mean by "changes on my computer"? Is that normal?

I'm sure it used to be a lot easier, but now it just stresses me out. Am I worried about nothing?

Thanks for any advice.

It means "Do you want to install the software on your machine", it's a Windows security message, I think it used to say something like "Are you sure".

Anything you want to install will come up with this message.

You can get the Google earth images by using Google Maps via your browser, maps.google.com, nothing installed apart from a few cookies.

The advantage of the Google Earth PC/Android/iOS version though is you can customize your personal locations easier including paths and distance measurement. The kml file then can also be saved and/or imported to another machine.

Yea, like Crossy said that's a security message/setting built into Windows User Account Controls...take a look at this link for more info. You can deactivate the security notification if desired. It don't necessary been something bad is happening (it don't mean that probably 99% of the time); it's just giving you a heads up of the possibility that with each new piece of software/driver you install it may affect how your computer operates...like you install a new video driver and all of sudden the video display is messed up and the computer now locks up a lot....or you install a new piece of software and it don't get along with your operating system all the time and occassionally causes a problem like freezing up, causing the computer to unexceptionally reboot.

Usually that portion of the User Account control is set on (Windows turns it on by default) and you'll probably get get that notice probably for the majority of new software installed and many times just when updating/installing new drivers, since most software and drivers do affect your system in multiple ways. When I installed TaxAct software a few days ago to do my U.S. taxes I got the notice, when my computer automatically downloaded/began to install some new video chip drivers I got that notice, but it didn't worry me because I knew it was software/drivers being loaded that I specifically asked for so I clicked Yes to allow the install. Now if the security notice popped up out of the blue like some malware was trying to sneak onto my computer then I would said No, don't allow the install and started investigating thiings.

If this is the first time you've seen such a notice I'm guessing you haven't loaded much software on your computer since you've got it, otherwise you would have seen the notice for most of your software installs assuming that User Account control setting was turned on and it is by default. Maybe it was turned off before and got turned on by a Windows update, and before would just allow the software to continue installation without even notifying you that the software/drivers would make some changes that may affect your whole system. A lot of people do turn the setting off...personally I like to leave it on to give that second confirmation that it's OK to install the software.

LOL I would be more worried about the loads by shop staff than I would Earth.

No need to shy awau from installing. Both Google Earth and Google Maps (web) have advantages/disadvantages over one another.
