Hi

Can anyone tell me if they have successively negotiated the price down for a new car. Also what car that was please.

People have told me that a lot of dealers are quite open to lowering the price and offering free stuff.

thanks for any reply

Bought three cars in Thailand. One was a Mitsubishi Triton. Had to go to 5 different dealerships before I found one where they would negotiate AND where they spoke English (got lucky and dealt with the owner)! They gave me a 30,000 baht discount, 3 years of insurance, tinted windows and a few trim items. That was 7 years ago.

Also bought a Toyota Yaris... they only spoke a little English but was able to get 1 year of insurance, window tints and some trim items.

More recently bought another Triton ....Again one year insurance, Tints, and trim items.

Good luck.....They're usually pretty fixed on the price ...but more than willing to throw in extras as noted above.

1 yr insurance, tints and trims are standard when buying new.

The tints and trims can also be removed for a further 5-10k off, if you wish.

There are always promos from different manufacturers with discounts every different month.

For Feb, Mitsubishi had a big cash off their down payment option. Some models with 70k baht off the down payment (125k down to 55k), others were 35k off.

As with most things in Thailand there is no "norm" everywhere you go it will be different. Just keep going til you get what you want or what you are happy with.

One thing to bare in mind, many will offer 0% on a new car or a low percent, take it, why use your money when you can use theirs, you 'get more on your money earning interest in a savings account.

Also, if you go that route remember in Thailand in most cases there is absolutely no incentive to pay it off early.

In my case I negotiated the interest rate down, free 1 yr insurance, window tints, window guards, interior mats, driving lamps, car cover. That was on a new Mazda 2 for the wife.

Wow. I thought it would be a given to get a fair bit off. well like i said i can only try. and the fact that i am not stuck on a particular car is probably a benefit.

i am not sure that i would get the credit being a newby to the place. it will be in my wifes name, who is gonna stay on a ed visa as a british passport holder.

i will also definitely look at the promotions and start from there.

it sounds like it could be a long road ahead.

cheers for the replies, much appreciated

When I bought my car, I knew what I wanted, I had sent a 3 different Thai people to check prices, discounts, etc.,

they all came back with the same numbers. I went to buy, didn't argue the price, got the same and the seller

threw in without even asking the same bits and pieces that have already been mentioned here. I guess the car

dealers are at least one step ahead of us.

I have heard of big discounts in top end cars and brands (BMW, Benz), but that is out of everyday people's league

and may be an urban legend as well, maybe what made you think about the OP.

No price negotions when I bought (though I tried). Nobody willing to negotiate anything, just throwing in different "extras". Mostly its free 1 year insurance and free window tint - they also try to make a big deal out of little crap like free mud-guards and free license-plate-holder. Mostly just dicker with the freebies, maybe try to get a good window tint instead of the standard cheap stuff they normally put on. Not much room, at the time I bought, that's just how it was, seller's market.

I got 100k off a 320i - at the motor show - I'm sure they'd do the same in the shop.

I told them I could sign for the car then or I could go home and email every BMW dealer in a 100k radius telling them I'd come and book thecar the next day with a cash deposit - to whoever gave me the best price.

The girl looked at me and said "please don't do that". I was happy with 100k off.

320 with broken gearbox ?

My wife went out to buy a Camry and the Toyota staff treated her like dirt. She walked across the road and bought an Accord, which was cheaper with plenty of extras. Go Toyota. Good work!!

I have found that going to a slightly smaller town will often result in a reduced price.

EG: look in Chiang Mai, then go check prices in Lampang. Honda sell for less there.

lol - yeah - they sort of missed that out on their side of the negotiating discussion...

1 year insurance is almost always given free ,as you will not get finance if there is no insurance on the vehicle.i have even got the free insurance buying 2nd hand used vehicle.

In my experience shopping for car last year, most dealers offers one year insurance and some other small things like mats, tinted windows, car cover..nothing major, and only advertised rebates or discounts.....All that ONLY in popular and big sellers cars like, Vios, City, Civic, Camry, Accord..... It is very possible to get better discounts or more extras in other brands and models, most Nissan Silphy, Teana, Novara, etc, and imported brands and tops of the lines likes Susuky, Ford, Chevrolet, Hundays and Subarus.

An example?...I was in looking in Nissan 2 weeks ago in Chiang Mai. Was a Nissan Teana, a top of the line luxury car with everything possible, leather, video cams, GPS, etc, etc, etc...only one on the show room. Big sign showing 890.000THB. A very good price for that car, but..the sales manager lowed the price to 825.000THB if I was ready to buy.....

I was not, and also was not in my budget..if not...In my opinion Nissan quality and prices are better than any other popular brand in Thailand....The Silphy is a good buy for the money...

Also I noticed that shows car in fairs and shopping malls are shown with a lot of extras without mark-up on the list price...but..you will have to buy that particular one, in that particular moment.....

I wouldnt be surprised if they did something on purpose with your gearbox because you bargained that 100k.

I bought a stainless steel carport and some extra roofs and stainless bars and it was 100k total. I talked him down to 90k but when they installed it the screws used were not stainless steel and the feet of the carport are made of iron. So in a few years the feet are rotting away and the carport will start sailing.

If you bargain a lot they just save it on the material costs or do something to make you regret your bargaining. You always have to check them, all the time, every screw or bit that's included.

Last year i was shopping for a new Altis, first girl easy discounted 50k off, another 30k off. Later i went back to the first girl and she wasn't there but some boy helped me (could not speak english of course) and he was very rude to me and i had to ask for discount 5 times and finally he said 30k off.

Just keep on asking, it is easy cash for talking 5 minutes longer.

Car salespersons are very unprofessional and for older models they will give you discount. I think the crisis in Thailand has just started now so soon the cars will get cheaper anyway.

I just bought a new car from Mitsubishi. They were very obliging. 30k off the list price, free insurance and a load of freebies, and that's on a 500k car. Honda were the exact opposite, nothing available at all.

Well it sounds like people have had different experiences. It is probably luck of the draw. would seem strange that if you were willing to buy any make, as they seem to be very similar, that they wouldnt give a discount.

hopefully they wont be selling much in that month and they might be getting desperate. I might try and eal with the manager and see how that goes.

cheers

I just bought a Volvo S60 for the wife and I got the biggest discount I've ever gotten from a dealer in Thailand. List price was 2.2 mill for the top spec (S) model. I got it at 2 060 000 baht (140k off list price) with tons of extras like GPS, flatscreen dvd entertainment in the back, 2 years insurance, free tint, etc etc.

Got slightly dissapointed though when I found out it was a normal external garmin GPS they installed. Apparantly Volvo doesn't offer built in satnav in Thailand as they don't have the software (maps and language) an seem reluctant to use 3rd party software.

Oh this was from advance auto in Chonburi.

Can you please let us know the address or the telephone number of the showroom please as I have been looking for a Teana . They had a promotion of reducing 200,000 baht for the 2013 models before the new models come out but every Nissan showroom in the South runs out of stock.
