I own a pick-up truck and just bought a scooter.

I always travel between Nong Kai, Chayaphuim, Bangkok, Pattaya and Rayong.

I travelled from Bangkok to Rayong and now in Pattaya over the last month with my scooter on the back of my pick-up. I had no problems (at this moment) from Authorities.

Over the last couple days 3 people have told my Thai girlfriend that it I illegal to do so and if caught I will get fined.

How much truth is in this. Can anyone provide a link to legals that can clear this up.

Thank you on advance.

Think if you paid the toll for your pick up AND bike, you should be home-free!

I paid for both, got pulled over, showed papers and toll receipt, no issues.

Maybe rules have changed?

Don't contribute/troll the problem unless you've got a solution!!

mate, thats news to me, how in the hell are you supposed to take it anywhere then if it isnt rideable. We have taken ours in the back plenty of times, we tie it off so it is solid and cant move and off we go, in fact we have seen shitloads of others doing the same thing, especially when they go away on holidays. Salavan, have the feeling you have been ripped off here, would love to know what rule of law they are using especially when you see how high the idiots doing long transport runs stack their pick ups. Isnt that what the back of a pick up is for, for you to put things in you need to transport it, looks like you were used for tea money, really needed to get them to tell you what law you broke.

update, wife just told me it is fine on normal roads but on expressways/tollroads you are not allowed to have anything in the back(even people) unless the back is covered over, hope this helps.

you might be correct

the police told the wife that you cant carry motor bikes on the motorway tollway whatever it is, in an open back truck he may have just been saying that to get a bride who knows T.I.T. everything is different every where i think they make the law up as they go along

When in doubt ask for a ticket. Soon becomes clear if the are trying it on...

If it is a real infringement then they'll write one up.

It is not illegal to transport your scooter in your pick-up. As seajae mentioned, it must be covered. You also need the book or a copy of the book in your possession to prove the bike is yours.

Each time I go through the Ploenchit toll both at the weekend I get fined for driving whilst in possession of a white face. Last time it was 'not waiting for a green light before turning right from Sukhumvit'(<deleted>!).

Just the usual teamoney nonsense.

I've seen scooters in pick ups with kids sitting on the scooter on the expressway - no problem if the driver in Thai.

Ask for a ticket, it makes the pests go away.

its not illegal at all , it must be covered with a net ,the same goes for anything in a pick up bed ,if you have not covered it on the express way you will get a fine ,if you do get a stop best pay him on the spot ,otherwise its a trip to his police station to get your licience back ,so a waste of a few hours

as long as its covered with a net no problems , ive done it a hundred times ,

Key point!....must have proof of ownership...Green Book. I've transported my bikes several times between Rangsit and Pattaya and was stopped once, produced GBook and big smiles all round, on my way...

Usually true but not always true.

I had a cop ask me what I wanted written on the ticket! He wanted me to pay cash. I insisted on the ticket. Neither of us knew whether the 'offence' he came up is actually on the books. He settled on the rather vague upakorn mai khrop.

Back to the OP. The problem is the expressway, motorways and tollways. Stay off them and you'll have no problems.

To be honest, i do not really see a reason why it would be illegal.

Truck is designed to carry goods, boxes, bike, furniture, etc.

Do not think has anything to do with the law, may be more with revenue collections

I was under the impression it depended on which road.........

Elevated toll roads I believe, as you find around Bangkok, it is not permitted.

transported my Vespa P200 in the back of my FIL's pick up from Chiang Mai to Prachin a few years ago and passed through several military/police checkpoints without any problems at all.

Several "officers" asked if I would sell it to 'em.

I also believe it has to do with covering it up, and i think it is a good rule a load needs to be covered up. You see people in those idiot trucks carrying all kind of stuff and loosing it. Making for danger for other road users. Covering it up and securing it good prevents that but is a bit more work for the owner.

Seajae's wife is correct! .....quote: "wife just told me it is fine on normal roads but on expressways/tollroads you are not allowed to have anything in the back(even people) unless the back is covered over"

(I learned this myself the hard way one year ago. )

...it doesn't seem to faze (...or maybe apply to...???) the Thais....have seen it hundreds of times...no cover...no net...just tied.....

...confusing....

It would rather seem that he rules depend on the road.

Obviously your bike /motorbike needs to be well tied down however on Normal or Motorway routes you

do not(so it appears)need a cover over it but on the Expressway you do.TIT.

I have transported at least 6 different motorbikes/scooters up from Bangkok to Chiang Mai over the last few months and never had any problems.

In fact the security mountain checkpoints have always been very polite/smiling and usually just waveme through..

No Thanks,

If they do write one up, they'll likely swap it for my driver's license and make me go to the office to pay the ticket to get my license back.

I'd rather pay the "spot fine" after negotiating it down as much as possible. $6-10 is a small price to pay to save an afternoon of inconvenience.

What about the multi deck trucks that transport new bikes?

They go along expressways.

Do the BIB think you will stop half way and ride the bike

given the money to a local motorcycle rank driver and tell him to go pick it up for you.

Writing a ticket means more paperwork for the copper. He deserves it if he's trying it on.

Little believed but very true fact, a civil servant, including a policeman, will never sign a bit of paper which is patently false. They are shitscared of doing so. The administrative court takes a dim view of it, people get exiled to civil service siberia for it.

Went twice from Rayong to Suratthani with a big bike on my pick-up, using the tollway. No net. No problems.

Try it again. I dare you.

I got nicked on about my 8th trip, after passing a half dozen other roadblocks that day set up to deter protesters coming to BKK.

Then it was my turn.

8 trips, 300 baht tea money- that's about $1.20 per trip so I'm not going to gripe too loud.

It is illegal to transport your bike without having all the ownership papers with you.

I got fined 5 years ago when I moved to Surin and the ownership papers were in Surin not with the bike.

Posted

Well, if they do stop you, you might like to enquire about the legality of transporting people in the bed of a truck.

that seems to be fine ,esp if they are kids or construction workers :D

but an uncovered motorcycle ,well ,thats just the devil ...........

You pay toll for the car that uses the road, the rate is according to the number of wheels of the vehicle.

If you pay for cargo if the cargo includes wheels you are being fooled, but it's always worth a try for the police to get some extra lunch off a farang.

Next time you will be asked to pay for the spare tire too ;-)
