BANGKOK, Mar 17 - Practitioners of Thai boxing--Muay Thai--gathered today in central Ayutthaya province, the old capital of Thailand, to celebrate National Muay Thai Day, also known as Nai Khanom Tom Day, which falls annually on March 17.

Ayutthaya Governor Witthaya Pewpong, together with officials concerned and some 600 boxing practitioners from 50 countries are joining various spiritual activities to celebrate the occasion.

At the event, participating Thai boxers also take this opportunity to pay homage and pledge to become followers of the father of Thai kickboxing called "Nai Khanom Tom", who was captured, fought and defeated ten Burmese boxers, sequentially earning himself his freedom dating back in the late 1700s.

The five-day event, today through Friday, is taking place near the statue of Nai Khanom Tom at the Provincial Sports Ground, featuring a sacred ceremony aims at planting new generations with the ideals of the art of proper Thai boxing, as well holding a Thai boxing tournament. (MCOT online news)
