Shurup
One of the problems with sex trafficking is that people sit around and talk about how bad it is but do nothing about it. One thing people can do is give some money each month to help fight this monster. It's really easy to talk about it and have opinions about it but donating just $10 US a month will help, if nothing else, feed and rehabilitate these women when rescued. Sure it's not going to do everything needed but there is something about giving when you get no reward for it, just give for the sake of giving to help someone you don't know. I give to the A21 Campaign to stop human trafficking but there are plenty of others, you can help instead of just talking do something. The fact is, very little donation money make it to the cause. It's one of the reasons I never donate. If I can't help the person directly, then I don't. Besides, unless those women you're talking about get millions, they're still going to get out and make extra $$$, they aren't going to live off donations only. Popular Post Toscano
Many poor Thai women do not see prostitution as bad , in the way that foreigners do . For girls from the north/northeast with little education , it is a source of immediate good income , that provides a better life for them and their families back home . Mothers and fathers don't question where the money comes from , they know how their daughter earns the money and are happy to receive it . Sex in Thailand isn't seen as an exclusive personal intimacy , making love , it is an activity , like having a pee or taking a shower . In Thailand love is money .
Toscano
#176 ICyou $10 a month would go nowhere and most girls who are bargirls or prostitutes choose to do it and do not want to be rehabilitated . There are many women in the N/N-E who have children and are divorced , who have several foreign boyfriends who visit at intervals . These men thinking they are the only one , send up to 10'000 baht every month .

Many don't see theft as bad, corruption, or selling their daughters to the highest bidder, does not make it right of socially beneficial though. In Thailand money is everything, that's what's wrong with the country and the pursuit of easy money through widespread prostitution is but one aspect of the countries hypocrisy and backwardness. BlueSkyCowboy
These busts are just publicity stunts. There are thousands of brothels all over Thailand not just Bangkok and nearby provinces. The biggest brothel in Thailand and probably all of Asia is just down the road at a place called... Pattaya. There are as many as 30,000 prostitutes operating there depending on the time of year, most from the poorest provinces of NE Thailand. Thai gov will never shut down Pattaya. Too many powerful players involved. What would Pattaya be without the illegal prostitution??

jacko45k
They should perhaps start arresting the customers of prostitutes, both Thai and falang to cut down the demand. It's always the girls that get arrested never the sex tourists, adulterers and Thais. It is illegal after all. How is that working out in other countries.....? Sad that these girls are treated this way, consider the location, it isn't a western tourist area at all.

I am in no way bashing Pattaya in any shape or form but you've gotta get real! You said 'quality' tourists to try and change the discussion. You also said NO prostitution.... similar to where exactly in Thailand? I say if prostitution was less obvious here, shall we say like in Chiangmai, that there would still be plenty of tourists here. The majority are not here for that anyhow, they come from Russia, China and Thailand. . They come for the sea and sun and attractions, I met some getting away from smog! chiang mai
The question was raised in post 187, "what would Pattaya be like without illegal prostitution", nobody questioned the effect if it were made less obvious, my answer therefore remains as is! And my reference to quality tourists remains as is also, without any attempt to change the discussion. Given that there is such a thriving and extensive sex industry in Pattaya, it follows that the tourist base on average is probably not of the highest quality, a quick walk down Beach Road will confirm that! It therefore follows that if the sex industry were to be zeroed out, the nature of the tourist base would change, unfortunately (and without bashing Pattaya) I do not see that Pattaya has the attributes necessary to make it a world renowned beach holiday destination, sorry.
Ulysses G.
Couples go there because they have heard how "wild" it is and they think that it would be an interesting place to see. The wide open and safe sex industry is what creates that impression. The same thing is true of Patong beach in Phuket. Anyone who thinks that most visitors are going to Pattaya to swim in sewage is delusional. Edited March 26, 2014 by Ulysses G.

Not "perfectly legal" but regulated under the Act on Entertainment Places, B.E. 2509 (1966) (the Entertainment Act). No one is committing an offence if they barfine a girl and take her back to their private room, as long as she is consenting and of legal age. Money may (or may not) change hands. Similar to an escort you pay for company, what may follow between the two of you is as they say --up to you. But to be paid for and taken upstairs in a room for short time is debatable. All the Pattaya beach 3kilometers of waiting trade is prostitution, could be 1000 easy in an evening loitering, with their own patch. If the local police have a raid they get about 4 or 5, the other 995 carry on.----any stings no more like quick grabs for 500 baht a time.

My reference was purely for places of entertainment, like bars, gogos and massage places, which are regulated and legal as far as it affects customers. Street prostitution and any "promiscuous" prostitution is another matter altogether. Quite how Soi 6 survives is surprising!
