CASTILLO-CORRALES CLASH OFF

Saturday 3rd June 2006

Castillo-Corrales: cancelled

The eagerly-anticipated third clash between Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales has been called off after Castillo failed to make the weight for the lightweight showdown.

Dubbed the “War to Settle the Score” with both men having won one of the previous encounters, the fight was cancelled with Corrales refusing to fight at a heavier weight.

Castillo tipped the scales four and a half pounds over the 135-pound lightweight limit meaning the bout for his WBC lightweight title could not go ahead.

It was a similar scenario last time the two men met with Castillo again failing to make the lightweight limit, but on that occasion Corrales agreed to a non-title match at a heavier weight.

He lost that fight in the fourth round and, after consultation with his promoter, decided against doing the same this time around and then launched a withering attack on Castillo for his failure to make the bout.

”If you've got the nerve to challenge me for my belt, in my city, on my turf, at least have the respect to even attempt to make the weight,” he blasted.

”Five pounds is not an attempt to make the weight. Two, a pound and a half, I can see that's an attempt to make the weight. Five pounds is not a ###### attempt to make the weight.”

Corrales missed out on a purse of $1.3 million by refusing to fight Castillo at a heavier weight, but his promoter Gary Shaw insisted he had done the right thing.

"(Diego Corrales) is not going to put his life at risk," Shaw said on Fightnews.com.

"You saw what happened last time. We are not money hungry!"

Castillo apologised for the fiasco, stating: “All I can say is I'm sorry.”

However, his behaviour provoked a furious attack from his own promoter Bob Arum who insisted he had been left utterly embarrassed by the whole scenario.

”I'm mortified and embarrassed by what happened here,” Arum said. “It's a disgrace.”

Just seen Ricky Hatton on Sky too making his comments heard, he was, understandably, miffed and exclaimed his discust also.

That Hatton report;

HATTON STUNNED BY CASTILLO

Saturday 3rd June 2006

Hatton: 'flabbergasted'

Ricky Hatton has spoken of his amazement at Jose Luis Castillo's failure to make the weight limit for his lightweight showdown with Diego Corrales.

Castillo was some four-and-a-half pounds over the 135-pound limit and Corrales opted against taking the fight at a heavier weight mindful of his defeat in similar circumstances last time the pair met.

Hatton, who won his first fight in America against Luis Collazo last month, was potentially being lined up to fight the winner of the Castillo-Corrales bout, but was left shocked by Castillo's antics.

Indeed, 'The Hitman' claimed he thought Castillo was trying to force Corrales in to fighting at a heavier weight once again to help his chances.

“I'm absolutely flabbergasted,” Hatton told Sky Sports News.

”I don't even know why he's bothered getting on the stage knowing that he's five pounds over the weight division.

”I think he's just trying to do the same as he did last time, hoping Corrales would say 'go on, we'll fight'.

”It's unbelievable, he got on the scales four or five times initially and I thought it was because he was so near the weight limit.

”But when he was five pounds over my jaw hit the floor - I couldn't believe it.”

oktay urkal is the european welterweight champ, but he is also the WBA number one contender for the belt hatton just won against collazo.

urkal (a german-based turk) took stepaside money so that fight could go on and now he wants his shot.

the trouble is it's a poor fight that nobody outside urkal's immediate family wants to see.

he is a faded force. he gave tszyu a good argument five years ago but has been beaten twice more recently by vivian harris.

hopefully hatton will ditch the belt and take a more meaningful fight because there are plenty more out there. cotto, gatti, baldimor, mayweather or even our very own witter should be at the top of the list, not urkal.
