webfact Posted March 24, 2014 Share Posted March 24, 2014 THAI-INDONESIAN RELATIONSTrawler crew eyed for murderThe NationBANGKOK: -- POLICE ARE eyeing 12 fishing boat crew members, including the boat captain, for their alleged role in the killing of two Indonesian marines in Indonesian waters last week.Pol Lt Gen Jakthip Chaijina said Indonesia would also be asked to re-open its waters to Thai fishing boats as the fishing industry was losing as much as Bt30 million daily due to the closure.Jakthip is an aide to the national police chief and leader of the investigation team in this case.After meeting related agencies, the boat owner and the Indonesian consul general in Songkhla, Jakthip said the investigation team should have completed the gathering of evidence in three days. Also, police would hold back two of the 12 suspects as witnesses.A source in the investigation team revealed that these two members of the Nattaya 7 crew had reportedly provided details about the killing of the two Indonesian marines. According to their account, Nattaya 7 left Songkhla to fish in Indonesian waters in December. I'm pretty sure that the Thai pleas will be ignored so you don't have to worry. Like any government is going to allow the murders of two of it's finest by nationals of another country to become anything less than a diplomatic incident. I don't think so. Just look at what happened when two Italian marines (I think they were marines?) were accused of killing 2 Indian fishermen recently. The incident became a huge diplomatic one that could have gone out of control. And the Thais have the audacity to request that the Indonesians re-open their waters to Thai fishermen? Are they nuts? Much like another issue, although completely unrelated to this one relating to Thai motorcycles entering Laos. Not that long ago, a Thai motorcycle caravan crashed in Sayabouli province, killing a local villager. The compensation was inadequate and the Thai rider(s) involved fled. Late last year a couple of Thai riders entered Laos at Beung Kan and refused to do any paperwork for their bikes, and then sped through another checkpoint, Muang Ngern back into Thailand at Nan. The stupid actions of these idiots means that Lao customs are now refusing Thai motorcycles at some checkpoints altogether, and in general only big bikes driven in small groups across the bigger and busier checkpoints can make it across now. In all other instances a tour must be arranged. Thailand could complain about that too, but the reality is that Laos doesn't care. It was the idiocy of some Thai riders that screwed it up. If you can't ride, then you don't enter another country and kill somebody! In the latter case, not doing documents smacks of ignorance and just sheer stupidity. There is no way those waters will be opened back up to Thai vessels at least until the Thai fishermen (all of them) have been extradited from Thailand to Indonesia for court hearings and trials. Those found guilty will certainly face execution by firing squad which is their method of dispatch. The Thai government will have to really mull this one over.... Do they have the stuff to hand over their citizens? Or do they just have to get used to the idea that they can just forget about Thais fishing in Indonesian waters for decades to come. This is an international incident, and it can get out of hand, this could start a cold war between the 2 countries. These were Marines, a very bad decision on the part of the Thai crew.
