Can anyone tell me which uk authority I need to approach to obtain the proof of uk single status?

As requested by Thai authorities prior to a (male) uk citizen marrying a (female) thai citizen, in Thailand.

I think this is required, isn't it?

Go to the UK Embassy in Bangkok with your Passport, Birth Certifcate (plus Divorce Certificates if you have been previously married).

Fiil out the Statutory Declaration - 'Affirmation of freedom to Marry' (which can be printed off from the Embassy Website) and submit it with the relevant documents for checking, if all is ok they will forward you the document, signed by an Embassy Official, to you by EMS, or you can go back later to collect said document.

Take the Affirmation document to a reputable translation agency and get it translated into Thai.

Go to the Bureau of Legal Affairs if open (in Chaeng Wattana) to get the translation and signature confirmed and legalised.

Take said document with you to Amphoe when you get married (make a colour copy first for your reference and possible future use when extending your permission to stay for Thai family, as Amphoe will keep the original) , along with all other original documents (just in case).

Have fun.

You do not need your Birth Certificate at the British Embassy.

Type out your Affirmation but DO NOT sign it, that has to be done in front of the Consular Official.

I got mine done on the day, Feb 24 this year, had to wait about 30 minutes to get seen at the counter, just get a ticket and wait for your number.

Fiancee was allowed to accompany me into the Embassy, they were very pleasant and helpful.

They take the document for checking, you pay the fee and sit back down.

You will be called back to a different window to sign the form and then the Consular Official signs and adds their seal.

All done within one hour.

Translation was done over the road, also took about an hour.

They wanted 3000 Baht to do the legalisation.

We took the Skytrain and then a taxi to the temporary office at Central Bang Na and managed to get the legalisation done that day too, cost was 400 Baht per document using their "express" service.

Do not believe the translation agencies when they tell you cannot do it the same day.

We left Pattaya by bus at 6am and returned on the 4pm bus from Ekamai.

Thanks to all for replies.

Pants, I was hoping I could "do it" whilst still in the uk!

I have looked at the web site evadgib, seems pretty comprehensive.

Ho hum, have fun indeed.

At least it will give me something to do this year.

Never say never indeed.

You have to do it here. Only a affirmation of permit to marry from the embassy will be accepted by the Amphoe where you register your marriage.

I have know idea what website you found information on stating otherwise.

I didn't. Post #5 provides info re 'affirmation of freedom to marry' which is what I understood the OP's question to be. If he is divorced and in UK he should bring his 'absolute' certificate with him.

Thanks ubonjoe and evadgib.

Can you just double confirm for me that I can't get this

'affirmation of freedom to marry'

document from any where whilst I'm actually in the uk.

I am uk divorced, and have the

'absolute'

certificate with me.

I'm not asking to have this confirmed because any one; or a web site; has told me any different.

It's just so I can make plans accordingly.

Thanks.
