Banana growers and OTOP production in Nong Khai severely hampered by drought

NONG KHAI, 02 April 2014 (NNT) – The drought situation remains severe, with waterways in several areas drying up. Meanwhile the air quality in the North remains sub-standard with haze continuing to blanket Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai.

In Nong Khai province's Sangkhom district, thousands of rai of banana plantations have been threatened by the lack of water. Banana trees at some plantations have started to dry off. The lack of banana fruit is also affecting the production of OTOP products in the district, which consist mostly of processed bananas.

In a bid to improve the air quality in Mae Hong Son, provincial governor Suraphon Phanat-amphon has coordinated for about 600 persons from the police force, the military, civil service and civilian population to simultaneously fight the forest fires raging in 7 districts. The effort came about after provincial authorities have been unsuccessful in reducing the air particulate matter reading to a safe level.

In Chiang Rai, those living in the city area still have to wear face masks to protect themselves against dust. According to the Pollution Control Department's air quality inspection, there is around 120-145 micrograms of PM10 particulate matter in a cubic meter of air, which is detrimental to people's health. Collaboration is being sought from all individuals in refraining from setting fire for all types of burning.

Court to decide today on hearing petition from senators to disqualify premier
Piyanut Tumnukasetchai,
Nuntida Puangthong
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Constitutional Court will decide today whether to accept the petition filed by senators to disqualify caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for her alleged interference in the transfer of National Security Council secretary-general Thawil Pliensri, said court chief spokesman Pimol Thampitakpong.

The petition was filed after the Supreme Administrative Court's ruling that Thawil be reinstated, as Yingluck's order to transfer him was unlawful.

The senators have taken recourse to Article 91 of the Constitution, appealing to the court to rule on whether Yingluck must be disqualified in accordance with Article 180, 182 (7) 268 and 266 (2) (3).

Pimol said it would take the court at least five days to issue a ruling.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana said that the point about Thawil's transfer is whether the PM has the authority to transfer him. If she has the authority, then she should not be accused of interference.

"It is a separate matter from whether the transfer is lawful or not. Decisions on the transfer of high-ranking officials rest with the Cabinet, so it is not interference but a normal practice,'' he said.

The court would also decide on whether to accept a petition filed by Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order director and caretaker Labour Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, seeking an order from the court to stop the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) rally. Chalerm said the PDRC protest was not peaceful and unarmed as they claimed but was an act of sedition and insurrection to bring down a democratic ruling system.
