Huge crowd celebrates Sonkran in Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen 15 April 2014 (NNT) — Tourists and local residents have joined in spectacular Songkran festivities at Khao Niew Raod, Khon Kaen province, for a second day.

Remarkably, the second day of the Songkran celebration at Khon Kaen saw even more visitors than the first day, where locals and tourists were joined by celebrities performing on stage providing non stop entertainment.

Khon Kaen’s Mayor, Theerasak Theethaphan, officially launched proceedings on the second day of the festival at 7 pm, when participants gathered at the well-known Khao Niew Road to celebrate the water splashing festival. Officials estimated the number to be around 100,000 people.

The Guiness Book of World Records recorded the biggest ‘human wave’ in 2011 at the very same Khao Niew Road, with a total of 50,206 people in the crowd. This year, however, officials are not specifically recording numbers at the event as they will do so next year when His Majesty the King celebrates his 88th birthday anniversary.

Buriram’s 2nd day of Songkran does not disappoint

BURIRAM 15 April 2014 (NNT) — Buriram has held its second day of Songkran celebrations. The atmosphere of the event has been more energetic than ever.

Tourists and locals numbering in the thousands yesterday flocked to join in on the much-anticipated “Music Festival” Songkran celebration at the iMoibile Stadium in Buriram province.

The second day of the event did not disappoint visitors, and performances from well-known celebrities caused heavy traffic gridlock more than 2 kilometer-long. Security in the area remains tight and officials are keeping a close watch on the venue.

However, in regard to the case where 5 teenagers were brought up on the boxing arena to fight with professional boxers, Mr. Tavorn Chansom, an ex-constituent assembly member, expressed his disapproval and stated that staging such a fight is not part of the Songkran tradition.

The fight was intended to have the teenagers settle their differences and vent their anger in the boxing match with professional boxers in order to prevent them from causing further disturbances at the celebration venue. However, Mr. Tavorn disapproved of the act, saying that it should have been left to police to deal with the mater.

PNSOC570415001000901_15042014_024637.jpg

BURI RAM, 15 April 2014 (NNT) – As the Songkran holiday is coming to an end, people taking vacation in northeastern provinces have begun to make their way back to Bangkok, with heavier traffic reported.

Many Songkran revelers in eight provinces in the Lower Northeast are gradually making their return to Bangkok and its vicinities today. Although no gridlock has occurred, Highway Number 24 linking Nang Rong district of Buri Ram province and Bangkok is seeing an increase in the number of cars, causing the traffic to be slow-moving. The traffic condition is expected to remain critical through tomorrow.

Pol Maj Gen Chaidej Panraksa, Commander of the Buri Ram Provincial Police, has ordered all units to stringently enforce traffic laws on motorists in order to take action against violators and ensure safety for all commuters.

According to the Road Safety Directing Center, during the first four days of the Songkran Seven Dangerous Days period, from April 11-14, 34 road accidents have been recorded in Buri Ram province, resulting in 33 injuries and 3 fatalities. The top cause of accident is drunk driving, followed by cutting in front of other cars and driving over the speed limit. Up to 82% of the vehicles involved in accidents were motorcycles.

Zero deaths so far in Lopburi Province, midway in Songkran

LOPBURI, 15 April 2014 (NNT) - Lopburi Province is proud to announce that there have been no serious casualties on the roads during the first four days of the Songkran Festival.

Earlier on April 11th, Lopburi Provincial Governor Thanakom Jongjira presided over an opening ceremony to launch a temporary road safety center under the slogan “Creating a culture of safety so that Songkran can be free of road accidents.”

At this point in the holidays, the center can rightly claim that they have largely lived up to their slogan, because no major road casualties have been reported. Even so, there were two motorbike accidents that were not life-threatening.

The first case involved a 21 year-old man riding a motorbike and driving under the influence of alcohol. He lost his balance on the bike and fell to the road. The bike rider's tongue was lacerated in the fall. The other case involved a 50 year-old woman also under the influence of alcohol while riding a motorbike. Furthermore, she was not wearing a safety helmet and was riding her bike over the speed limit, when her bike fell. She suffered a few lacerations and the finger bones on her left hand were broken. In both cases, the bike riders were taken to hospital by their relatives.

Overall, Lopburi province has seen a total of 12 road accidents where a number of people were injured since the start of the festival but no deaths have been reported so far.

BANGKOK, April 15 – Songkran celebrants started returning from upcountry to the capital today to avoid traffic congestion as highway police are in full force to facilitate motorists and travellers.

Nakhon Ratchasima where roads from several northeastern provinces meet has been congested since yesterday.

Police said Highway 24 in Nang Rong district – the threshold to Nakhon Ratchasima – saw an increasing number of cars as travellers from eight northeastern provinces gradually poured into Bangkok.

Commercial banks and the private sector resume business tomorrow while the public sector and state enterprises do not go back to work until Thursday.

In the northeastern province of Maha Sarakham, the Transport Company has increased Bangkok-bound bus service from today.

Narong Sahamethapat, permanent secretary for public health, instructed all state-run hospitals along five major highways – Paholyothin, Asia, Mitraparb, Petchkasem and Sukhumvit – to be on full alert with ambulances and medical personnel standing by today and tomorrow.

Hospitals were also instructed to reserve blood of every group to cope with accident patients. (MCOT online news)
