Canadians rally to legalize marijuana

OTTAWA: -- Several thousand people came out in Canada's biggest cities on Sunday to call for the legalization of marijuana - a yearly protest that happens internationally on April 20, AFP reports. The demonstrations - dubbed the "420" rallies after the date, 4/20 in North American style, and the code-term popularly used to refer to pot consumption - took place in Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa.

In each city, including the capital, Ottawa, where protesters gathered on the lawn near the parliament building, music groups played for the crowds.

The atmosphere was similar to the annual 420 festival celebrating marijuana in the US city of Denver, where, for this first time this year, the drug is legal for recreational use.

In Montreal, a strong police presence surrounded the demonstrators, while in Ottawa and Vancouver, a pizza chain offered a free slice to any participant in the rally celebrating a drug known to prompt the munchies.

The real shame is ,if Thailand was wise it would jump the gun ,so to speak and at least legalize medicinal pot for consumption!

As a starter at least! before it goes Nationwide in the USA ! It would definitely increase tourism , especially in the category of people with money to spend at more tourist attractions then the 7-11 Tourists that are crowding only the streets and Supermarkets these days....And with prices here below the US of A & Euro areas , the farmer and the taxman could both be doing well !

Maybe then the Rice farmers could add a 2nd crop and this time get their money as payment instead of a bribe for votes !

When you consider how poorly the tourism industry has been doing in the last decade or so ,it'd be just the shot in the nation's economic arm of tourism, that everyone will do well and share the Big Cookie jar filled with medicinal brownies and cookies ! Just like when it was used to season certain dishes ,many Full Moon Parties long ago !

But the trick to it is getting the ball rolling now or should I say Zig-Zags , before the USA & other areas in the World get into it in full swing.

They also could solve the harmful plastic bag problem , by reintroducing one of Earth's greatest natural products ,HEMP , which the oil& chemical companies BS's the world into using PLASTIC instead of

HEMP...what a load of crap the world was sold when HEMP was thrown under the Bus with marijuana ,by a bunch of Federal agents lying to the politicians about weed ,because with the removal of Prohibition in the USA they were all going to be out of a job , so they demonized Pot !

Dopers rise in the streets and cheer on other dopers. Nothing new and not even remotely interesting. Society doesn't need increased levels of stupidity and we certainly don't need more stoned fools engaging in dangerous practices after indulging in this so called harmless wacky weed.

Keep these smelly drugs as illegal substances and increase penalties for such stupidity, that'll fix them.

It must be a sad existence you lead, poor old dopers, time to get a life and act responsibly, me thinks wink.png

You may be one of the people making money off of weed cause its illegal , that and you have really no idea what your talking about . Plus , its been noted that some people get more creative on the stinky weeds....whoever it was ,must have really drilled a deep hole in your mind where you just don't want to come out of and be sensible.....too many people's lives have been ruined by stupid archaic and un-truthful reasons for keeping weed illegal!

Just the medicinal value alone ,it has been proven to help children that are suffering from a medical illness that causes seizures , if you want to learn something and not be living in the dark ,go to You Tube and see Dr, Sanjay from CNN' and his 2 reports on the facts and not the BS on Weed !

Then come back and tell us what you think , don't condemn something that isn't near as bad as Booze for you without knowing the facts! Besides , some people smell allot worse!

I'm happy to see that Canadians are finally standing up for something; although I can think of more pressing issues. This is one of the worst governments I've seen in a long time, running this country. They need to be dethroned as soon as legally possible; before it's too late..........

always accused of similar things by people pushing the dope barrow.

couldn't be the fact. that I actually know more than what you think?

how many dead people have you scooped up after a doped up weed head has driven when he shouldn't? no doubt none, but this never happens, right?

weed has been linked to mental illness, there's plenty of examples.

I don't need to google the information about the subject, it wasn't educated by online nonesense.

I am well aware of some of the medicinal benefits of cannabis.

Anyway, it's always the same old weak arguments from the dopers.

Stoned fools engaging in dangerous practices; you must have had "Reefer Madness" pushed down your throat. The only practices I've seen from these "dopers" involves laying around at home, or in a park somewhere. Why not condemn smoking and drinking? these are much more serious problems in society. Not to mention that this drug is used to treat some serious conditions people have, without exposing them to the harmful side effects a lot of prescribed medications cause. I myself am not a pot user, but I think people should be allowed to do what they want, as long as they are responsible about it, and not hurting anyone else. What I can't stand, is a world where governments are allowed to control their citizens and force them in to living by their unjust, corrupt, and hypocritical standards......

I always condemn Drinking and Smoking. The problems that come from these substances are horrendous.

The fact that "you" haven't seen problems created by dopers doesn't mean that there arnt problems. You either need to switch on or get out a little more.

As for the last sentence about governments, I will leave it at saying that The grubby and irresponsible people need to be controlled to protect the decent people, I could go into more detail but can't be bothered as no doubt the dopers parade knows better, can't argue with these guys.

They are taking current medicines off the market faster than a bat out of hell.

Soon you won't even be able to get Paracetamol if someone OD's on it and it makes the news!

The pot was never very strong, They were dipped in liquid opium. I know a Thai woman whose family used to make them in the 60s and 70s..

Here are the 2 reports by the one time anti-pot Doc from his CNN documentary , who went out and learned the true story!

#2 http://youtu.be/tAFu-Ihwyzg

If you googled it, well, it must be right. Nice world you live in.
Maybe the fact more states in usa are making it less illigal , countrys lifting the ban such as venezuela , citys in germany belgium is a more reliable source

I guess my friends have been smart enough not to be driving all-fracked up , but you are right it;s not always the case but its a lot less then people on Booze , the mentally-ill were more likely all ready mentally ill...what's your examples you speak of ,did you watch the CNN Report ,that's from a News Station not internet propaganda...weak arguments , I worked an ER as a USAF medical specialist , and booze and prescription drugs are the real problems of people that are scooped up not potheads , its people that abuse anything, that cause the problems...and I always considered dopers to be people on pills or hard drugs like heroin not those who enjoy pot , they are referred to as Stoners .You can't even get your terms right !

I have forgotten more about life then you will ever learn !

The war on Drugs is a losing battle ! put that wasted 6 billion $ ++++ to medical research instead !

@neverdie

The only good part about your argument is that your not a hypocrite you want to ban it all. Inclusive alcohol, that is the only good argument there is if talking about weed. Otherwise its all hypocrisy because its been proven time and again that alcohol is far worse.

Its sad that people still believe all the government propaganda that has been written and not independent research. It might not be real harmless but nothing is if you abuse it. But normal use no problem it even helps against cancer. (i would vaporize it then not smoke then you don't have the other problems)..

I am one for choice so I would love to see it free, but I would of course be against anyone using it while operating a vehicle. I did my fair bit of drugs back in the Netherlands, cant say it bothered me much or my mates with regular jobs owning companies ect. I come from a country that has proven its not a big problem.

But I admit anything that is abused can cause problems.. but that goes for everything even food.

hi robblok,

yes fair call old mate.

Crikey, don't ban food !

Alcohol is a shocking drug, it's cost on society far out stripes anything else and by a long way.

issue by issue, I acknowledged the medicinal uses for cannabis but don't accept that allowing another aweful drug to be legalised is the right road to travel. Very slippery slope indeed.

I am sure laws could be adjusted to deal with those medicinal purposes in due course but not just for dopers to claim they have a need for it.

Actually I was one of those dopers, no need for it but its fun at times.

Thing is i get your point about people driving under the influence but make that a punishable fact not the whole use. I for one have seen enough research that it is damaging but nothing major. I see it as a freedom, as an adult.

I have never ever in my long life (not as long as yours) seen anyone get aggressive on weed so that risk is just not there. Some people who are susceptible for it COULD get mental problems. That means first you have to be in a group that is at risk and then still its not a sure thing. Instead of then banning it for everyone just advice people.

Banning never worked.. prohibition was a good example of my point.

But I can understand there will always be people against it though I find that a bit selfish. They want it banned for everyone while they could just not take it themselves. I would only ban things that directly hurts me not because I don't like something.

But this will always be a hot discussion.

You would think more than the cost of wanting to invade other countries?

You would think more than the cost of trying to impose one's religion on someone else?

You would think more than the cost of people wanting to gather useless wealth at the expense of others?

Yes mate a hot topic and an emotional one for some dopers. Hence the abusive posts I received, of course we both know how brave the internet makes folk and that none of them would actually stand up to my face and say such things. Keyboard warriors is not the issue here and whilst I understand your points, I don't necessarily agree with them all. Despite that, I respect the way you do business.

I have seen people be violent at which time they were stoned or at least affected by THC. I have seen crime and domestic abuse as a result of it.

I've seen children suffer due to their parents inability to notice at what their addiction was doing to their family. I've been to robberies where the offenders were caught and admitted they did the robbery in order to buy weed and finally I can think of numerous accidents I attended where as it turned out THC played a significant factor in the crash.

I clearly remember, night after night, attempting to hold the brain of a toddler in his skull and keep him breathing several years ago after a doped up driver caused his vehicle to career into a poor woman walking her baby in the footpath and I will never forget the toddlers mother shriek late at the hospital when we told her that the boy had died.

I've seen school children beat each other up over cannabis and remember a case where a son murdered his father because the father had confiscated his stash.

I'm certainly not saying alcohol hasn't done it's damage, it's done too much.

Simply, the people need controlling. Some people just don't realise the stupidity of their own actions and need guidance, society has acceptances and THC shouldn't be one of them.

I pity these users, the same way I pity people that absolutely must partake in alcohol just to enjoy themselves. What a sad state if affairs.

Sorry Andre,

Please try to keep up, we are talking about substance abuse, I was talking about issues with drugs, legal and illegal ones. But you knew that, didn't you.

Nice attempt to derail the subject, do not pass GO, do not collect $200. Please take the time to read Moderator Scott's previous message on page one. Stay on topic. I understand dopers need to bring alcohol into the arguement but your comments are nonesense.

The things you are saying are not nice at all your violence and THC i will have to disbelieve as there are NO studies that find correlation between THC and violence. That does not mean that someone who has smoked weed cant become violent. People can become violent after drinking a glass of water and it would not mean that water has caused it. Also I wonder how you know he was not onto something else too.

As for driving and the substance.. big shame and should be punished but saying that nobody can use it because some can use it in a wrong way is punishing the good for deeds of the bad.

The father and son, could be mate I was not there but it certainly isnt the only son to kill his father and vice versa.. no drugs needed for that.

You and I will see this differently and no way either of us will chance our view. I hate banning and believe that good people should never be punished for the misuse of others. That is what is happening here instead of going after the people who are bad on the stuff they go after everyone.
