BANGKOK: -- First they stole the dogs, but we didn't speak out because we're cat nerds. Then they stole our sacred traditions, but we didn't speak out because it was Singapore. Finally, they came for our baht, and we said hell no you can't have our money.

Proponents of the Bitcoin are debating a symbol to represent the universal currency, and some have suggested taking that of the Thai baht: ฿.

As Saiyai Sakawee reports on the Tech in Asia blog, the debate has taken on a new urgency after an industry group started pushing another option: Ƀ. As an unregulated, non-centralized currency, Bitcoin's boosters don't appreciate an organized effort to control its image and many have rejected the suggested symbol.

Some point to the use of "$" for a variety of currencies as a precedent for hijacking the B-stroke from Thailand's baht.

"As others have said in the past, the $ represents the Mexican Peso, the Canadian Dollar and the American Dollar," said Reddit user Asperous in a discussion of the topic. "I see no problem with re-using the symbol." [read more...]

"As others have said in the past, the $ represents the Mexican Peso, the Canadian Dollar and the American Dollar,"

Many nations share the Dollar / Peso symbol, even Singapore. As usual, the locals involved are imbeciles who haven't a clue how things work in the real world.

Why not try to claim ownership to the letters T,H,A,I,L,A,N and D while you're at it? blink.png

Bring back the florin, half crown, ten bob note, farthing etc.the world was an easier place then.

White fiver, threepenny dodger, silver threepenny bit for xmas puddings, old penny-pocket full for a bob. All them filed down Halfpennies we put in the meter, as we never had a shilling left.

And i'll take all the penny blacks off any posters hands. in return for some 78 records.

Universal currency------no way jose. have enough with the bleeding Euro.

And the Thais stole the down bars from the US dollar...i bet they have no idea what they symobolize or even their meaning

My understanding of the origin of the current dollar symbol is that it came from overlaying the 'U" on the "S" from "United States", FWIW.

I don't remember America complaining about plagiarism.

And I believe the US stole the down bars from the Spanish, the dollar symbol was in use before the US even existed as a country

I always thought the symbol came from the Spanish originally - so the Americans were the plagiarists.

I am happy to stand corrected. The British also had a silver dollar that was a trade coin. I have one somewhere. I don't remember the date, but it was 18-something.

Them pens at school were scratchy--with blobs everywhere. I did have cheap waterman for my 15th birthday, on leaving school. Just when I didn't need it.cheesy.gif

I didn't know that. Interesting. I think I'm going to indulge my "inner nerd" and do some currency research this morning. Makes for a nice change from the incessant political crap.

It does indeed.

I bought a few many years ago when I was buying some sovereigns and gold roubles for my kids. The dealer had them and they were very cheap, so I bought some for the interest value. %-wise they have gone up in value more than the gold coins.

We ought to revert to the Thai SATANG, I am collecting these coins from 7-11, Tesco, Big C, Up to now I have a big biscuit tin full, and with it being currency here I took some to the corner shop and they said we don't want them.

We either drop them off--4 x 25 satang for a 1 Baht, biggest joke in Thailand, waste of time in minting and copper.-----or we ask the international community to use them for the next world currency.

You are indeed correct. Great Britain minted high siver content trade dollars for foreign trade. They were in use in some areas until 1935. Some of these trade dollars were minted for trading with Singapore, others known as China Dollars were minted for trade with Hong Kong, but Great Britain also minted other trade dollars. The US minted trade dollars between 1873 and 1885. You will also recall that 5 shillings was called a dollar and the half crown was often called half-a-dollar.

My point? Thailand should not be too precious about the symbol for the Baht (THB). The only people who will care outside of Thailand are expat Thais. What am I saying? Copernicus' theory of the Solar System and the planets orbiting a star have not reached the LOS yet. Surely the Universe orbits Bangkok?

Isn't always the way it goes with Satang. I have a might pile myself it seems without fail any time I go to the above places I end up with .50 .75. Even if I have them on me the next place I end up going I get them. I stopped using them and started collecting them for a future gift from Thailand. At first I was going to spend the entire pile at 7-11 just to get them back but then I realized they have no value other than being a coin from Thailand so why not just collect them.

I believe it was first originated in the Spanish-American colonies and around the 1770s which coincides with a number of "national" events in America. In fact I believe it was actually English Americans who started using it in trading with the Spanish American business of the time.
