WayneThompson
So my GF is pregnant and so we decided its a good time to get married. Whilst we are madly in love, this is in part to keep her older conservative siblings happy. She is 30 and the youngest of 12. Her mother is still around but her father is deceased. She has told her family of our plans and they have come back saying they want me to pay 5 million baht sin sod. I think this is to buy a house in Bangkok with so that we can live there. Has anyone heard of this amount before? I've lived in Thailand for a few years and I've never heard of it.
Popular Post Upnotover
Youngest of 12? No wonder her father passed away, poor sod must have been exhausted.
Popular Post Costas2008
If you have the 5mil, buy the house yourself. It's a different thing, what you think and what they think. And don't forget to get 30 year lease. Edited April 25, 2014 by Costas2008
Popular Post Bkungbank
Bargain it's too high not house for you , you have to check properly it's for parent used as they raise little girl milk money, some in cash and gold to show have farang son in law, some movie shown in fan and rice cooker. The reason was for your wife keep some cash and jewelries for future when she need it but now days more on show off the villagers and pay off debts. It's right to pay certain amount of money but 5 Millons i think that is too much, you should diversify in investment for family and children, many farang when first came here very rich ends up empty after few years.

Popular Post MobileContent
Possible. A friend of my just took a flight on a private jet via MJets to Macau which was already two million Baht, plus the casino and shopping came in with 7.5 million Baht in 4 days. Sinsod will be 20 million Baht but its for show and he gets it back but I guess he will give it to the parents and if they refuse he will build a wat. He is also going to marry a rich Thai lady in her 30's and he has assets of 2-3 billion Baht. I can't wait for that party by end of next month. If you are loaded why not.

steelepulse
Promise them a check to show everyone at the wedding for 5 million baht, but make sure the check can't be cashed. Family has big face, you still have 5 million in the bank.
oneday
The way I understand it "sin sot" is based on her station in life. Just how rich is the family? I'd say they would have to be very well off if they are asking for 5M. Also, she should have never been married before or have kids. Her age can also comes into play. Yes, if the family is honest, then you should get much of that money back, but if they buy a house and put it in your wife's name then you can kiss that money goodbye if you divorce. If you can't easily afford 5M then you shouldn't be paying that much. For 5M she and her family better be pretty "hi-so". I'm sure you know you can't own land, but you can own a house as long as you can prove it by paperwork; receipts and such. Good luck.

recycler
Would you buy your wife back home? Sinsod put woman in a position to be negotiated over by the family, even if they call it culture it's bad! You can get legally married at the local tessabaan office for 300 Baht if I remember right. You will need proof of you embassy that you are entitled to marry (single or divorced). With the right documents it's done in half an hour. pacman32
This is so annoying.........Yeah its all well and good to show off huge amounts of sinsod at a wedding whether for real or just for show but the reality of it when a farang is involved is that it sets dangerous precedents.. Once 1 pays then every local village girl wants the same regardless of social standing. My ex's family asked me for 1,000,000 to marry her and even though yes they were a decent family and she was well educated and in the police it just seemed a crazy amount to ask. Seems 1 mill is the new round figure they all aspire to. But 5,000,000 wow! that really is a figure you should be wary of, if they really intend to purchase a house with it then make damn sure you have a good lawyer set something up for you for if thing go pear shaped. If you really cannot afford to lose that money i would advise you to think twice. Speak to your gf, if she really loves you then she should help you with her families demands. If she does not then i would run a mile as it sounds like a setup. Edited April 26, 2014 by pacman32

Popular Post NangrongJ
Every time I read these I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Why are you even considering this? A sin sod, traditionally, is for the girls family, those that have brought her up. If she has been married before there is no sin sod. Only a farang pays for divorced women. In any case,a marriage is, or should be an equal bond between two people. So we respect her traditions and culture, and she, with her family respect yours. In my country (UK) the brides father pays for the wedding, so cough up Mr. Pay nothing to them. It is not required. If she doesn't like it then you've found something out about her early.
Popular Post misterphil
Isn't Sin Sod a virgin price? If you've already knocked her up its kind of redundant now isn't it? In certain Thai circles she would be classed as "used goods" so sin sod should not be paid.
misterphil
You say "Whilst we are madly in love, this is in part to keep her older conservative siblings happy." Already doomed from the start if you are partly marrying her to keep ger family happy. Shouldnt it be a 100% bond between you and her, nothing to do with her family.
silomdon232
Blindly being ripped off.. If a thai is killed in a road accident the family receive thb50,000. To wed one whom you've already got pregnant should be nothing like 5m. Ask how they have arrived at such a figure.....
