Airport suffers lower revenue growth

BANGKOK: -- The Airports of Thailand (AOT) yesterday reported a drop in revenue to 5% growth from the projected 10%, saying political conflict is main reason that scares away travelers.

AOT director Mekin Petplai said overall revenue in the first quarter of 2014 increased by only 5.1%, much lower than the expected 10%, mainly due to the political conflict that turn away tourists.

However, he said AOT has developed contingency plans to maintain the overall outcome of 2014 at a satisfactory level, by reducing the airport fee and promoting Thai tourism in cooperation with The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

But despite of the low revenue growth, it would have no impact on its development plan.

The development of the second phase of Suvarnabhumi Airport is still on schedule.

The first phase of the Don Meung development plan will be completed by the end of 2014, he said It is designed to serve 30 million passengers currently, rising to 40 million passengers in 2015.

With its completion, the two Bangkok airports will have a combined capacity of 100 million passengers a year by 2016.

The AOT is now urgently working on the development of the second phase of Suvarnabhumi airport.

The airport director said that the construction layout is being concluded and it should be possible to open the auction in May.

So far the plan is still on schedule and the development project is expected to be completed in 2017.

In its present phase, Suvarnabhumi Airport has the capacity to service 45 million passengers a year. The main international airport will later have the capacity to handle 60 million passengers a year.

Is 'lower revenue growth' the new term for substantial loss now?

Time to reduce the politicians to lower the excessive cost. It could be classified as waste reduction.

Didn't help much before, You didn't take care of your customers when times were good. Seems to be a Thai trend at the minute.

Did you read the article? Revenue growth "increased by only 5.1%, much lower than the expected 10%"

Just raise the fees.

They already voted to raise the fees last year. The raised fee goes into effect mid-2014. There are a few threads on Thai Visa from last year talking about it, otherwise, there are better articles out there on the web you can read by searching Google or Bing.

October 25 2013 - "Airports of Thailand has resolved to raise passenger departure fees from the current Bt100 to Bt200 for domestic flights and from Bt700 to Bt800 for international flights, effective in mid-2014."

From the looks on the faces of traders in Pattaya (Day and Night)

I would say closer to 50%

AND I can see distant take off's from Swampy -

From that I would say 70% LESS traffic

You know if there was some competition with King Power the AOT might make more money off of rents but we all know that is not about to happen here in free trade Thailand
