So its official then , the mall group are going to build one of their malls opposite tesco lotus.

Anyone know when construction starts ?

Just to add to the mayhem at that junction. Cant wait :-(

The report goes theve set aside 20 billion for that project but 60 billion in total for phuket developments

PHUKET: The Mall Group is set to invest 20 billion baht in the development of a 150 rai mega-project in Phukets Kathu district as part of an 80bn baht venture to open six world-class shopping centers in expectation of Thailands market flooding when the gates of the Asian Economic Community (AEC) open next year.

The BluPearl project [in Phuket] will feature shopping malls, hotels, condominiums, office buildings and world-class theme parks, Supaluck Umpujh, the Mall Groups vice-chairwoman said.

It will be the pearl of Phuket, the pride of the Andaman. It will be a world-class luxury retail and entertainment resort destination in Asia, the same as The Palm is in Dubai.

The recently announced expansion will form a major part of The Mall Groups bid to cash in on the full implementation of the AEC next year, reported The Nation.

However, the BluPearl project, to be situated on Phra Phuket Kaew Road, isnt slated to be finished until 2016.

Thailands participation in the AEC in 2015 will herald a major change in the countrys position as a leading regional shopping hub and top tourist destination, said Ms Supaluck.

The improved infrastructure, transportation and airports in key cities is expected to increase inbound [Thai] tourism from 25mn to 40mn people within the next five years, with the key destination cities including Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai.

Kathu Mayor Chaianan Sutthikul voiced his full support of the project.

This will bolster economic growth in the area. Though Ive yet to see the details, there is no doubt that it will be good for Phukets economy, he told the Phuket Gazette.

Kathu District Chief Sayan Chanachaiwong was more reserved about the news of the mega-project landing in Phuket, withholding comment until he had an opportunity to learn more about it.

Phuket Provincial Chief Administrative Officer Watcharin Pathomwathanapong said the project would be good for Phuket as it would offer more shopping options for tourists and residents, but voiced his concern about possible traffic problems that might ensue.

The five mega-projects that will be soaking up the 60bn baht of the budget not being invested in Phuket are The Emporium, The EmQuartier, The Emsphere, BluPort and Bangkok Mall.

The District-Em will be a 650,000-square-meter retail center consisting of three world-class shopping complexes The Emporium, The EmQuartier and The Emsphere located on 50 rai adjacent to Benjasiri Park in Bangkok.

Another pivotal goal for The Mall Group is its flagship project, Bangkok Mall, to be located at the intersection of Bang Na-Trat and Sukhumvit roads on a plot of 100 rai across from the Bitec convention center in Bang Na.

The Mall Group will also be collaborating with Proud Real Estate by investing more than 5bn baht in BluPort, the first resort mall in Hua Hin. All on one piece of land. I think the use of plurals may be a translation error.

With their money no wonder they have been allowed to fill in the lake on that land.

They specialise in upmarket places where more people go to browse and be seen rather than actually spend. They have excellent food courts though, a level above those currently available in Phuket.

So, what'll be open first, the BluPearl or the Tesco Lotus underpass?

Why not build up in Chern Talay and keep the ruskies up there. Call it Paragonski.

They are everywhere, you should look around Chalong.

Is The Mall project on the land just behind Billion Plaza? If so it was not a lake, I used to see cows & buffalo there, but was filled in with huge amounts of rubbish.

I have no objection to another mall. It is nigh on impossible to get a decent park at Tesco Plus on any given day & I rarely go there nowadays.

If it is on the right hand side of the road as heading towards Tesco or on the left hand side coming away from Tesco then it is a large area with loads of coconut trees and as previously mentioned a load of rubbish. More trees coming down it seems.

I'm guessing: Heading towards the airport from Central Festival, it's the large piece of land on the right, just after Tesco, on the corner, at the traffic lights.

I was just being told in another thread last week how the economy is contracting and no-one is spending money here any more.

If only these multi-billion dollar projects included Thai visa in their feasibility studies...think of the money they could save.

I believe Central will open in Cherng Talay in the not too distant future, not too far from where Villa is.

Tesco toward Patong Road, on the left. Was a tree plantation when I was working in Billion Plaza.

That road is not built for this. Expect another traffic light and delays.

Not lakes mate, they are abandoned flooded tin mines, quite often very deep water at the shore line

As they are not natural its a good idea to fill them in,it will stop the drownings that happen in them

I vaguely remember seeing photos of rivers going deep in to Phuket. Those rivers are now filled with land.

Currently these old tin mine ponds store some of the rain water which accumulates during the rain season. If these ponds are filled with land and there is no longer rivers it might cause flooding later on.

It could be a good idea to force the property developers to create water ways to the sea in case they wish to fill the ponds as part of the overall planning. But this is Phuket and it will never happen. Maybe after some years people will be complaining how the Tesco intersection flooding every single year.

Actually I was referring to the wrong piece of land. I originally thought it would be the land opposite Tesco Lotus on the left traveling south. I have no idea if there are any lakes on the land being cleared for this project.

I would think there is a low ground way from Lotus to either SE towards Phuket town to connect to the existing klongs.

There would be need for some digging though.

It would be interesting to see some old maps of Phuket when it was still in the natural stage. As well as maps during the mining period.

Natural or man made i do not know which flows towards the sea, it looks man made

That could be the solution in case there will be problems later on. In functional location this would be investigated before there is a problem. Here things happen more in reactive mode.

The officials could introduce 1 million baht cost per filled rai put to a fund to finance the issues later on. Oh, that's a bad idea except for the Mercedes sellers.
