Has Thailand's political turmoil influenced Ebay sellers?

I've been buying different items (particularly watches) from Ebay for years, but lately I've noticed that the majority will no longer ship to Thailand. This is the case particularly from the European and British sellers. I rarely buy from the US anyway since they introduced this crazy Global Shipping program, but previously there was never a problem with Europe. Are Ebay sellers fearful of the reliability of the Thai postal system because of the political situation?

I can't say i have noticed a difference there were always people who did not deliver to Thailand and I doubt the troubles here have increased it. But you still might be right as I never really researched it. I in general buy from Brits as the shipping costs are nice. The Yanks are just too expensive and slow shipping wise, though in general more customer friendly.

From the Germans: many don't ship to countries so far away because they are afraid of fraud. Some don't want to have the troubles with the revenue department (VAT) and some just send without any problems.

Ebay has introduced something called the "Global Shipping Program" for US sellers that supposedly automatically calculates both shipping and import duty. This has added substantially to the item price and even adds import duty to second hand items that would never attract duty if sent though USPS. For that reason it is no longer viable for me to buy from the US, but you are correct about the British postal costs, very reasonable, but I have noticed that even a lot of British sellers are no longer shipping to Thailand.

Ebay has generally over rules and over played itself out of business, they keep messing with it and adding fees everywhere for anything they can. It is a far cry from the Ebay of 10 years ago.

They should listen to the old addage of "if it aint broke , dont try to fix it"

Ebay is history now, once a good place to buy and sell, now totally destroyed by over regulation, add Paypal ownership into the mix and its a dead duck in comparison.

Yes I seen the global shipping too.. its good and bad, good that you know the tax ahead bad that you can't avoid it anymore.

But there were always loads of people not wanting to ship to Thailand. IMHO it has not gotten worse. But as I said your experience might be different.

Ebay just got greedy, they wanted more money and got it. Paypal is a good thing (for buyers) for sellers and bookkeepers its crap.

I don't know how the added import duty can be good when sometimes it's 50% of the item's value. This is on a used watch costing $100! I seriously doubt that Thai Customs would impose that kind of duty if the watch was just sent through USPS. The other thing I really detest about the Global Shipping is that it's so inconsistent, the shipping and customs can vary so much for the same item from different sellers. It's just a blatant rip-off by Ebay.

You really need to read more before you write something down. Its ok to complain because you don't like something but making statements that the tax is not applied correctly makes you look foolish.

There is a 30% tax on watches .. you can look it up in the import tax database. That tax goes over shipping and the item, then after that tax 7% vat is added. So the 50 percent they are talking about is perfectly legit. That it often is not taxed that way is because it is not checked.

So its not a rip off its just applying the taxes that are due.

I don't like these taxes anymore as you but they are not a rip of they are official.

Robblock Please don't start preaching to me about what I need to read. You show me where the Thai customs would charge 50% duty on a secondhand watch worth $100, and my point was (which you chose to ignore) that the Global Shipping fees are wildly inconsistent from seller to seller for the same item. So maybe read what I said before you once again get on your high horse.

BTW, the only times I've paid duty on NEW watches into Thailand was when they were sent Fedex, and then I paid 500 baht on a $150 watch, a far cry from 50%.

You did not read what i said, and I was right. Second hand does not mean free of duty if it still has value. There is no exemption for that.

The fact that you have only paid on new does not make it a rule.. I will give an example.. if i drive a car past the speed limit and I dont get caught it does not change the speed limit I just did not get caught.

The tax rate on watches is 40% add 7% vat and you got 47% percent its actually more as the 7% comes after the 40%. This goes over the whole watch plus shipping costs. So its not a rip off its a crazy high tax rate but its the rules.

Now before you make statements look things up and make an informed post.

If it's 47% as you say, why was I only charged 500 baht on a $150 watch, and that was at the Post Office? As usual, you still ignored my point about the Global Shipping being inconsistent, but I'm tired of having this discussion with you, I've been down this road before and it leads nowhere.

Your tired of being pointed at being wrong. I seen that before with you. Grumpy old member who thinks he knows it all because he is old.

I don't say this, this is an official tax site that most informed members on Thaivisa use to calculate import taxes. Its from the Thai revenue department. So its not something I say its the law.

The law can be applied wrong at times and that can explain you getting lucky.

However if you go to the site and go to where I am you will see there are more options.. if a watch for instance comes from an Asean country an other tax rate (0%) applies.

Instead of moaning and groaning do your own research here so you know what you CAN be hit with and if it is more that you CAN protest. With this information you can avoid trouble.

If global shipping is inconsistent you can correct them using this site as reference..

I call it as i see it mate, normal people would have checked the site out seen it was legit. Said sorry yes you were right 50% tax could happen.

You keep on complaining not even admitting you are wrong, that makes you a GOM in my book.

Just for your information, global shipping is done by ebay itself not by the sellers (i know as i had contacted a seller and had a sale reversed) He told me i would get the money in two trances back one part from him the other from Ebay.

So for inconsistencies you have to talk to ebay, but there are many reasons for them and if you show them this site they could correct it for you if it is wrong.
