PDRC supporters told to join victorious celebration on May 26

BANGKOK: -- The People’s Democratic Reform Committee has asked its supporters to show up in full force on next Monday and to bring with them candles to be lighted on the same night for the celebration of their victory.

The lighting of the candles is a symbolic gesture that Thailand has finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel, said PDRC secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban on Thursday.

Mr Suthep this morning met with PDRC representatives from throughout the country to ask for their approval of the PDRC’s political objectives. He said that the objectives were approved unanimously.

The objectives are reform before election and an interim prime minister to be appointed to head a functional government.

Mr Suthep together a few key core members then joined the second round of meeting with representatives from six other political groups hosted by General Prayuth Chan-ocha, director of Peace and Order Maintaining Command. Other parties at the meeting include the government, the UDD, Pheu Thai party, Democrat party, the Senate and the Election Commission.

PDRC core member Sathit Wongnongtoei, meanwhile, said that three protest stages are to be set up tomorrow at the Democracy Monument, Sanam Luang and Makkawan bridge for the mass rally tomorrow.

Part of the objectives of martial lw was to limit such gatherings and contain them. It will be interesting if the army let this happen, whilst at the same time bloackading the red shirt protest camp.

As for Suthep he still just sounds like the deluded old criminal he is. The King of corruption leading the fight against corruption laugh.png

My thoughts exactly.

Protests going nowhere so use martial law as an excuse to claim victory and pack up the whole sorry show.

PDRC to hold major rallies this weekend

BANGKOK, 22 May 2014 (NNT) – The People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) announced its plans to stage major rallies during May 23-25 as high-level talks between political groups entered a second day on Thursday (May 22).

PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban participated in the talks chaired by Army Chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, which are also attended by six other groups including the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), the Democrat Party, the Pheu Thai Party, the Election Commission (EC), and Acting Senate Speaker Surachai Liangboonlertchai.

The talks ended inconclusively on Wednesday but all groups said more issues will be discussed during the second meeting held on Thursday at 2pm.

Meanwhile, the PDRC has invited the public to join their rallies this weekend which will be organized in front of the United Nations building at the Democracy Monument and at Sanam Luang. The group is planning to announce their victory on May 26.

If the Military dont act against these gatherings then it really will be one more big step towards civil war with not many to go till it is reached.

Its a PARTY..... nothing to stop people from celebrations... come along and bring a bottle... I sure will be at one of the three... and a wee bit of Karaoke no doubt.... whistling.gif

You are aware you could be arrested, martial law is in place regulating gatherings?

He certainly should be led away. This is a very blatant two-fingered salute to Prayuth and his efforts. Thaksin wants nothing short of amnesty and Suthep wants all the toys for himself. They both need to be swept aside once and for all. They are both an impediment to progress.

Suthep never wanted power himself. All he wants is the Shinawatras away.

The RTA and General Prayuth will not do anything, there will be no clamp down on any other PDRC gatherings, Suthep isn't for or about compromise, never has been, and never will be, he will never back down, EVER, as he is no doubt fully aware that General Prayuth will do nothing.

Compromise isn't on Sutheps agenda. I would suspect that the PTP will snub the rest of the meetings with the General, as the decisions behind closed doors have already been made, and were made ages ago, Sutheps know's a damn sight more than he's letting on, he didn't pluck the 25-27th out the air as they're his lucky numbers, he was never going to compromise, as he knows that he will get what he has been demanding all along, and the past 3 days are just smoke and mirrors aimed at deflecting the media and the International community away from what is really going on behind these closed doors.

Who thinks differently and why? and do you think there will be a compromise that suits all parties?

I wonder if General Prayuth felt that he had no choice but to stage a Coup, given that Suthep was never going to compromise ? I would guess that ALL protesters will have to vacate their sites, maybe put that champagne on ice Khun Suthep, unless you knew this was about to happen, but it would be pretty stupid to throw a party under the current climate, as it would be like throwing petrol on the flames and be seen as very provocative to the reds..

This move by Suthep is provocative. It was provocative earlier today when we were still under martial law. Now that a coup has been called, it would be much more provocative if these plans were not substantially curtained. The winds are already blowing in the direction that Suthep would favour. He knows it and he's jubilant - as are many Thais right now. But he really, really needs to cool it. This is way too premature. Hopefully, later on in the day, he will see the sense of that. He exerts a lot of influence on his followers. He needs to be conscious of that and just allow things to take their course.

Under the martial law I believe the general said protest could continue at the established sites but they must be contained there.. No one to date has defined that more specifically... so my guess...given the freedom this tool has had for 7 months is that he will be allowed to party on claim victory etc etc.since he has the protection of all parties that have already most likely agreed to give him a face/save exit..everything I am hearing and have read indicates he will indeed claim his victory..It is a shame. Disenfranchising people who waited decades to have a say and now once again are turned away and soured on the whole process so piggly wiggly and the other pork can continue at the trough is indeed a step backwards. It sets a very sad precedent and completes the roadmap for any other tool down the road to do precisely what he has done...ignore the rule of law, scoff at the Attorney General and police/warrants and ignore requests ( numerous) to respond to charges...way to go Suthep you succeeded in teaching every mug out there how to beat the system.. if you have the 'right' connections.......

It is certainly a victory for the "good people" but not for the greater number of Thai people...Considering the good General and his buddies are and have been clearly Anti-Thaksin historically ( easily googled) they all may turn the head and look the other way... sad really..if the General had the wherewithal and the lack of "pressure" from his bunkmates lo these many years.. he might do the right thing and enforce the martial law he invoked equally across all the boards.. My guess is he is too "pressured" to do that.. but to think for a moment that this "Victory Dance" will be all we see of Suthep, and that he will go quietly into the night is fairly far fetched... what also may very much be the case is... if... and whatever... deal has already been cut... we will only be told a fraction of what it really means...and years down the road will have to rely on wikileaks and other sources to find out the truth...so the speculation drones on..no matter where you fall on this kettle of fish...it surely is not over yet...

Just too much negative vibes mate wai.gif

He is getting what he wants, though I am not 100% happy even though I am anti government. It would have been better if a reform council had been setup that was more legitimate now the reds can later always complain about what comes out of this or ignore it.

On the other hand we will probably get stronger reforms as when they would have made with red players obstructing it all.

So a bit of a double feeling.. its a win probably (if reforms come that curtail power abuse by the government) but not a total win.

As for Suthep.. he should cool it unless he really has the army his blessing 100%
