If you are married to a Thai the 400k would be enough.

If not you would need an annual income equal to 400k baht to do the extension.

If I am a day late in renewing my Retirement visa is there going to be a major fine or problem in renewing?

Instead of driving all the way from Trat to Bangkok to the US Embassy for Affidavit of Income, I like to meet the Embassy at their biannual Outreach Program in Pattaya. This year it will be held July 9, too early and October 8. My Retirement Visa lapses Oct. 7

I am told there is a 500 baht per day penalty, but there is no further problem or paperwork needed. This I would gladly sacrifice to avoid Bangkok.

There is no grace period for a renewing a retirement extension of stay. Don't confuse overstay fines or late address reporting fines with renewing your extension.

That would be enough for an extension of stay for marriage.
