Work permit, employer wants keep original

Featured Replies

I just joined a Thai company about a month ago and received a work permit just few days ago. Now company wants to keep original permit and ask me to keep a copy. Does this pose any legal problem on my side by not having original with me?

No problem at all. As far as I know the law states that you must keep it at your place of work.

In 20 years, the only time I've been asked for my work permit was when renewing visa, getting a yellow 'tabien baan', getting a mortgage, etc. Actually quite a few times but never asked by the police or immigration on the spot.

The Work Permit does not belong to your employer - it's for you to hold, they have no right per se to keep it.

Particularly important if you are moving around with your work, you should have the original.

Why can't your employer hold the copy?

Thanks for replys. After talking to employer, it seems that they realized what they have been doing is wrong and returned me the original. Yes, they keep a copy now. Problem solved. Thanks again.

your always better holding the original yourself in my experience, but saying that, its also your responsibility, so if you do lose it or it gets damaged, as lot of passports seem to do in Thailand...rolleyes.gif ....your employer could make you pay for the replacement.
