Obec wants to continue with tablets for students

BANGKOK: -- THE OFFICE of Basic Education Commission (Obec) is pushing for the One Tablet Per Child project to continue.

"We will seek a budget of more than Bt4 billion for purchasing tablets for the 2014 academic year," Obec secretary-general Apichart Jeerawuth said yesterday.

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), which is now running the country, will meet with ministries related to social psychology today. The seven ministries, including the Education Ministry, have been asked to submit their urgent policies.

Suthasri Wongsamarn, permanent secretary for Education, said yesterday that the One Tablet Per Child project was among the urgent issues, though the focus would likely be on completing the pending purchase for the 2013 academic year.

"For the 2014 academic year, we will have to review whether tablets should be handed out to all students. There has been some discussion on whether we should switch to using tablets for smart classrooms instead," she said.

Both Suthasri and Apichart are also planning to seek immediate funding for schools affected by the recent earthquake and aftershocks in the North.

"We will need about Bt250 million budget to repair and rebuild school buildings," Apichart said.

Put an end to this now. Take back all the one's give out and give them to soldiers as a reward for supporting the coup.

I think smart classrooms are the way to go....if you provide smart teachers.

Tablets are just toys. The schools need computers with good networks, fast internet connections and the kind of software that is used by most businesses.

First and foremost, schools need teachers who can manage a proper curriculum.

The current state of the schools and teachers is perhaps Thailand's biggest national disgrace.

OBEC... the brainwashing propaganda of education continues...

Not a good idea , this program needs investigation of both the equipment and the education department administration, as a poorly thought out PTP initiative this is just one of many coffee1.gif that needs investigating.

They don't want them. They are junk.

The soldiers' reward is seeing the end of the scam's originator, with mopping up operations to stop the few remaining bureaucrats in OBEC that still tout it.

Its not just the curriculum! The teachers need to stop lecturing and making kids memorize and get them to be curious , interested, and particpate in classrooms.

When a student is forbidden to ask WHY and is instead told to accept it no matter what the kids learning is hindered.

You are so right. I did some corporate teaching and one of the students told me in her first semester at uni she failed everything going from homework to actual exams until she stopped asking questions in her lectures.

Ask questions equates to challenging the teachers.

Surely ALL Thaksin populist policies are to be disbanded.

This guy has the brains of a biscuit tin.

Is Thaksin still pulling the strings here?... IE:... OBEC to keep the Thaksin policies rolling to give credit to his next formed party??

I think he needs to give up.. No Thaksin government is ever going to be accepted in Thailand, even by those up north, and the PTP are dead in the water and probably will be impeached en-masse and dissolved.

Gosh, after only having some tablets for around a year, now having more tablets is an "urgent" issue. Not sure Khun Suthasri has his education priorities in order....seems to be many more "truly urgent" education priorities money could be better spent on.

it was such a success (in the wallets of the few) they want to continue this madness

I think OBEC needs to announce that because of the mismanage of funds in the Rice Policy by the former government has left us no choice but to terminate the tablet program. We will need to use the money to pay the farmers. Because the rice program is way over the 500 billion baht cap.

I hope the military orders an inquiry into this policy as well. Let's get all the money back. I would go as far as freezing all the assets of people in charge of these policies until proper investigation is perform. As of now, there have very little transparency in all of these project.

Have to agree with you; part of managing a curriculum is being able to present it properly.

There is so much room for improvement.

Tablets are just toys. The schools need computers with good networks, fast internet connections and the kind of software that is used by most businesses.

Not so. They are a tool that should be used properly and appropriately to aid learning. Even if it is the right one for the job, a tool is of little use if the student does not know how to use it correctly and the teacher does not know how best to use it to aid learning and develop inquiring minds. Nor will any computer be much use to schools if the programs installed on it are not relevant to the subjects being taught.

A lot depends on the school. My daughter just graduated from the prep school at King Mongkut Institute of Technology where she was encouraged to ask questions.

If one has children, perhaps the best thing that can be done for them is to get them out of the public system.

small laptops for example. Not so beautiful but you can do 100 times more things.

cheaper small laptop, running Linux with the kids don't have admin rights and OpenOffice would be perfect.

All laptops exactly the same model, so no difficult installation, on every laptop everything is exactly the same.

From a known brand, like Acer or Samsung with lots of service centers all over Thailand and at least 2 years warranty.

Maybe mobile internet so the kids can use it at home as well.

These tablets don't work, are they made in Thailand, with the Thai skill? Or bought in China, allowing corrupted guys making money?

This was another ill-conceived and improperly implemented project. It should be scraped.

Go to JIB, buy the cheapest tablet they have (about 1k THB), and you'll quickly learn it's a piece of cr@p. The PTP tablets are worse.

The latter.

There are a lot of corruption in this purchase deal.

Dear Prayuth, please cancel this project, PLEASE.

Supply better teacher to school, and repaint the black board in the class is good enough.

Free chalk and fresk milk for every kids PLEASE.

After all, Thailand is still developing.
