Officials step up measures to crackdown illegal logging ring

TAK, 3 June 2014, (NNT) – Tak provincial security forces have seized illegal logs of timber worth a combined value of several million baht.

Tak provincial authorities have raided a wood processing plant in Mae Ramad District after they received reports that the site was being used for transforming wood into housing components. They have found one an alien worker and arrested another suspect at the scene as they were confiscating the processed products and raw wood logs.

Meanwhile, authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima province arrested two individuals for possessing more than 20 logs of Siamese rosewood. The arrested suspects admitted that they were hired for 10,000 baht each to transport the logs from Buriram to Bueng Kan Province.

The police said one of the criminals has also attempted to bribe the officials. Thus, officials took both men into custody where they were charged with illegal possession of rare woods and bribery.

Elsewhere in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, military troops and police officers were sent to investigate a lot of 60 massive logs consisting of several rare woods left deserted in an empty land area in Phra Phrom District. Officials are currently investigating on the owner of these logs and the land, while adding that the people connected to the illegal operation would face severe punishment.

Well, well, look now, the 'Tak authorities' are suddenly waking up, must be 'for the show' though IMO, after what happened with the teakwood stash on a Shins' estate, so-called coming from a broken down old house, yeah, sure... I wonder what's hidden behind this new 'move'?

Well, I am hoping that it is because the police are being accompanied by the army, who I am guessing are not being bought off too easily.rolleyes.gif

very even handed, they are grabbing them from all over Thailand, north and south.

Even handed my arse. You are buying what they're selling. There are yellow and red casinos, yellow and red illegal loggers, yellow and red drug lords, and yellow and red bribery rings.

Does the crackdown show the country is in order? No. The crackdown shows the country is under a specific kind of yellow order. No Yellows will be prosecuted with jail terms, no yellows will be thrown under the bus for expediency, no yellows will be punished in any real way.

Wake up -- the propaganda from both sides is designed to have you side with them.

Many of us are not buying it. Many of us, and MANY more Thais (they have just lived here their whole lives and, of course, don't have the "wisdom" of westerners, like yourself). They have lived here all their lives and know...if you follow the money...you find a two-headed snake.

One head is yellow, and the other is red.....

Amazing Thailand. The foreign governments have it wrong, and so do do the TVF Solomons.

How laughable. Resume rants, but be assured -- NO ONE worth considering is being convinced. No one, but the sheeple.

Just a trifle cynical and colour prejudiced as well, I detect.

Ho hum. So they got the absolute lowest people on the rungs of this operation. As we all should know by now, illegal logging has traditionally been the province of the highest levels of officialdom (and many mid-levels as well), in Thailand as well as in the surrounding countries. This has resulted in the near-complete disappearance of the once-great Southeast Asian forests. This is a great loss, and not only for aesthetic reasons.

The career of Chavalit the Tree-Killer is instructive. The story begins in the late l980s. Chavalit was an army general who made out very well using a scheme that exported illegally-cut Thai logs to Burma, where they were stamped as being of Burmese origin. They then were floated down the Salween, the border river, to a border crossing and imported back into Thailand. The operation was greased by loads of money liberally distributed to, in the words of a Chang Noi article, "officials from police, army, local administration, customs, immigration, forestry and national parks—ranging from some very top men to the little people who hold open the gates."

I think you'll agree that that includes just about all of the usual characters. Adding to the complicated brew of actors were rebel groups in Burma, local por liangs (godfathers), and politicians. By the time this scheme was in full flower, Chavalit had become prime minister. Far from facing punishment or being consigned to ignominy for his role in this and other scandals, he has remained a player, to a greater or lesser extent, in Thai affairs-- recently visiting Burma once again to plump for "development projects" and "investment opportunities".

Readers owe it to themselves to peruse the accounts linked to below.
