June 9, 201411 yr I'm looking at a relatively safe way to travel with my 9kg dog on a motorcycle. I'm looking at purchasing a 650 V-Strom and having a rugged kennel fabricated for the luggage rack. Does anybody know if these exist off-the-rack or where I might be able to commission a custom job? Thanks! Evan p.s. don't waste your time replying that it's a bad idea, thanks.
June 9, 201411 yr Saddleman, Kuryakyn, and T-Bags all make pet carriers. Less rugged than what you pictured above though. Just some musing...you would want the enclosure well ventilated...but with enough shade to prevent dehydration.
June 9, 201411 yr I would very much worry about heat, judging by the pictured design. If you do have something fabricated, please consider adding a lot of ventilation for the tropical heat.
June 10, 201411 yr A 9kg dog and a 'rugged kennel' are going to be a very large weight high and at the rear of your bike. It's going to place a massive strain on the bike frame itself and could seriously compromise handling. Better but costlier solution would be a small bike trailer.
June 10, 201411 yr I'm with edwinchester, it's been a long time since I rode a bike but weight high and at the back was a killer (college books in a top box was bad enough). Would the pooch fit in a tank bag type affair, he could potentially see out and the weight is in a better position. "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
June 10, 201411 yr I dont think a aluminum kennel plus 9kg would be very noticeable on a 650. But as another poster said when the sun beats down on the metal is going to cook!
June 10, 201411 yr The metal ones would be a real sweat box in direct sunlight. Why not buy a dog crate and attach that? You could fabricate a bracket/frame to hold it to the bike (the frame could wrap around the crate to add a bit of protection if needed).
June 10, 201411 yr Popular Post Single dog should be no problem Just be careful if he has a long tail Seriously though during this time of year heat would be my biggest concern
June 10, 201411 yr It would be surprising if the weight was an issue; loaded panniers and a top box would top out at say 15 kg on your 650. Can't follow your lead; my 8 dogs range from 22 to 38 kg... Sent - how is not that important...
