Hakuna matata, jambo bwana,

When we went to Mombasa a few years ago, my brother actually refused to speak English. He had a bunch of papers with every Swahili word and sentence you could imagine.

The rest of us ignored him after a few days. So he just pottered around the bar, reading off of his print outs. Rather embarassing. He even talked to the monkeys in Swahili. At least he didn't start jumping up and down at the hotel disco like a Masai warrior on heat.

It is a lovely language. I spoke it before i spoke English when my parents lived in Uganda.

I protest and I declare the opening of a Greek Forum on TV.

That will be only for pairs arguing between themselves.

Examples:

Neverdie vs Whereyoustay

David vs Jingthing.

I will argue with myself also........but don't worry.........everything will sound Greek to you.

I don't think any of those phrases were on my brother's list!!

The only one i recognise is we we which means you.

Other Swahili words we use in my family are Kali - meaning hot, spicy food and dhobi - meaning the laundry or washing.

I had a la la baby - which was my dolly which i slept with, which my mum still has. I think la la means sleeping.

I also love the music and rythm and the way the ladies dance. Happy African music.

Unlike many Asian languages, words are not separated. Wewe, lala, etc.

Haina wasi ndugu, lala salama.
