:o Hello, Am 51 year old American. Marrying a Thai woman. Have read about having xxx Thb in bank. Was planning to put house, bank accounts, and nearly everything else in wife's name. This is for protection against ex-wife, more than any other reason. My question is: Would having everything in wife's name effect visa or immagration?

If you are getting a support Thai wife extension of stay a joint account with the wife has been fine with immigration in my experience. If you are going to use the retirement option it might not work as they may consider 50% to belong to the wife so I would ask about that before doing if it is required for your visa extension.

That was also my first thought as I the post read. Why not in your own account in your name?

You can change your PIN, you can cancel your card or you can transfer in a new or other account etc. should you have an other new problem in the future what we don't hope.

Whatever you decide to do regarding visas etc do not put your money in your wife's name. Repeat....DO NOT!

Totally agree with all saying that if you put all your $$$$ in Wife's name, you're not to smart...think man. you're afraid your ex is wanting to get it what about your Thai wife, she probably don.t like $$$$, and she LOVEs YOU, right? Cause thats what most will tell you, so they can have a good life, WITH the securety of $$$$$.

Good Luck.

I have renewed my 1 year OA visa 4 times. The first three times the bank a/c was in my name. Decided to change to a joint a/c for my wife's protection if I died etc. When I submitted info to immigration on this they said either I had to double the amount in the a/c or have my own a/c. Second option much simpler.

Is your extension of stay for retirement or support Thai wife? Can't tell from your previous posts.

At Phu Sing a couple of weeks ago they offered me extension of Non O based on either marraige or retirement on joint bank a/c.

The only a/c we had in Thailand was in my wife's name and we changed it to a joint a/c specifically for the visa app.

I agree with the posters above who advise not doing this.

However strong your relationship is, you should never knowingly put another in a position of temptation... :o

here's an offer. instead of putting it all in your wife's name and risking that she takes everything, put it in my name and i promise i'll only take half. that way you'll still have half of your money.

its a good deal considering the risks, if you think about it :o

This was for a retirement visa. Normally immigration want to see 800,000 baht in bank a/c but with a joint a/c they wanted 1,600,000

One thing a lot of posters have missed, is that the ex-wife will have a devil of a time getting the money out of Thailand. Assess the risk and cost verses the benefit, only you know that part of the equation.

It is also worth remembering that with some visas you need to be seen to be bringing money into the country. So it may be worth looking at parking some assests in a neutral corner and bring it to Thailand as needed.

Why not make an offshore bank account that nobody but you can touch? That way you don't have to worry about your current wife or your ex even finding out about it. HSBC as well as other well known banks offer offshore accounts.
