Court approves bigger cigarette warnings

Funny how the smoker's argument so often is, "but look how bad <fill in the blank> is!" (smog, internal combustion engines, fossil fuels, booze, factory exhaust, junk food, sugary drinks, too much tv, not enough exercise, conservative politics, FOX News, 'W', too much time on this forum, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., ...). Lol. Hardly a justification for smoking. Just a lame attempt to distract the easily distracted from the matter actually under discussion...

I actually don't get the motivation. Do you think we're all going to write letters to our politicians demanding tobacco taxes be lowered, restrictions on public smoking be lifted, advertising bans rescinded..... The game's already over; the cards already all played. The trend is not your friend... The topic of this thread is just another example; and there'll be more with time.

What you should realise is that the tobacco industry has probably been a popular whippping boy whilst the truth about other industries has been passed over .

Cigarettes are bad.

Plenty of other powerful industries are bad too. Just wait.

You watch, the way scientists, doctors, and nutritionists have been getting things wrong lately, they'll be handing out packets of ciggy's to school children soon, realizing that they had been wrong all along, smoking is good for you after all. Watch Hawkers nickers get twisted now.

Oh yes. I'm quite worried that this might happen... coffee1.gif

Just wait until they start really to analyse the amount of lung cancers and respiratory problems caused by living in inner cities. There have been stories of kids in Beijing and Mexico city developing lung cancers. And no they were not 20 a day smokers.

Most of the second hand smoking statistics could equally have been blamed on inner city car pollution, but as yet, the car industry has escaped absolutely scot free.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/10427845/Chinas-air-pollution-blamed-for-eight-year-olds-lung-cancer.html

Children were more vulnerable to air pollution than adults, but 40 per cent of lung cancer cases were still caused by smoking, Dr Kan added.

Shock horror. So only 40% of lung cancer is caused by cigarettes. But but but, cigarette consumption has been booming, so what has been causing the other 60% all this time? Of course, the massive increase in internal combustion engines in populated areas over the last 70 years wouldn't have anything to do with that would it?

Smoking has something for everyone,

You're never alone with a strand, that's going back a bit but it's for the gregarious type.

Then we have players cut for men, that's for the navy type's who like playing around on battleships and firing big guns.

Then last but not least for the outdoor types who like riding about on horses in the wild open plains of America, Marlborough.

Yes we smokers have had to survive a lot ( or not as the case may be ) , remember the old days when pubs were pubs? the smell of stale beer and full ash trays, the haunting smell of urine coming through the left open toilet doors and the gentle sounds of heaving as someone vomited in the toilet bowls. Yes we've come a long way,you dare'nt drink now for fear of losing your driving license and you don't go to the pub now unless you are looking for a knife fight, still , we can't all live in a civilized society.
