DrAzTiK Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) Hi everybody, I am thinking about purchasing a new smartphone/phablet. I am not very expert about technology but I think I need a polyvalent device. I guess I have to take care about the screen choice ( inches) considering one of my main utilisation will be to read ebooks in decents conditions (I hope). I was thinking first about purchasing the Lenovo p780 (5inch screen and great battery) but I looked the phone at the shop today and I am not very sure now, considering 5 inch screen looks quite small for read books decently IMO and my feeling is that 5.5 inch appears like a minimum. Can you give me your opinion about reading ebook on phone/phablet? I am not sure but 5.5inch looks really a maximum to me considering I still want to be able to carry my phablet in my pocket. I also wondering about samsung note 2 or 3. Taking notes with a pen looks interessing but I don't know if I will use it? What do you think about this feature ? My others use will be to use GPS (hope to try geocaching in Thailand^^) but I guess all modern smarphone have gps now. Of course, living in THailand, I will need to be present 100% on social networks (facebook, Line, wechat, skype) ^^ I think a Dual sim feature would also be welcome. ==>Maybe the IQ9 1 could make the job. But it's 5.7 inch and the battery autonomy looks not so great. (but for the price, it's surely a nice device) Not easyyy Edited July 1, 2014 by DrAzTiK
guzzi850m2 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Kindle reader for me, I own 2, lol. I have the Kindle app in my IQ4' with 5" screen and I find it hard to read and prefer the real deal. A Kindle reader is very light and it will last min 2 weeks per battery charge if you read a lot. How long will a tablet last per battery charge? Max 1 day perhaps so make sure it's charged before you go to bed if you like to read there. How much for a Kindle in the US? 100 - 150 $? You don't get much tablet for that unless you buy low end stuff. My 2 cents.
DrAzTiK Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 I have checked all current smartphone/phablets and I think the best one is the LG optimus VU (1.2 or 3) It's a 5 inch device but with a 4/3 screen, witch is very convenient for e reading. Unfortunately, this device is not avaible in many country, especially in Thailand.
Globalist Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 If reading Ebooks is the main purpose then Kindle is still the best choice considering readability and saving your eyes. This is due to its special screen technology making it virtually the same as reading a paper book. For mult-purpose use, a phablet / tablet is a better choice, doesn't really matter which brand as long as the screen resulution is good enough.

I don't understand what a kindle can do more than a tablet. I bought for my boy a Ainol Hero android tablet which has a anitgloss screen protector. With moonreader you can change the background color in different tints of gray which makes it very soft on the eyes, and as a premium he has all the options a tablet has.

KIndles are designed to read books. That's it. They can't do anything more than a tablet because they're not designed to. They have a screen that you can read in sunlight just like you can read a book. They only use power when you actually turn a page so a battery charge lasts a month rather than a couple of days. If the main purpose is to read books buy a Kindle (or Kobo or Nook etc.). 2
DrAzTiK Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 I have been lucky and purchased a LG optimus vu at Chiang Mai. (second hand, 5250 bath , device+ cover). It's really a very convenient and powerfull device and surely the best phablet for read books considering the best book is the always avaible one. But I am an occasional reader, Kindles are surely better if you read 2 or 3 hours everydays.

I agree 100% I have an ipad and can use it to read books with apps, but i bought a kindle and it is 100 times better for reading books. Anyone claiming different has never tried reading books in direct sunlight. Reading is quite addictive I have to be careful not to have to many good books on the kindle or I wont sleep at night. Once I start its hard to stop.
