It's a peak travel time in the UK due to school holidays, especially these days when it's becoming increasingly 'illegal' to take kids away from school when they have lessons scheduled.

Yeah I thought that might be the reason but was thinking is Thailand a popular family destination?

Many expats returning to Europe for summer holidays...

THINK=use brains. No, families are not the main part, the many more single young persons, usually also tied into school/uni hols. Does not only apply to Uk but to about ANY West=Europe country/departure=thus it also makes no sense to ask/search if other airports offer lower fares. However, at both ends sometimes there are weeks that are holiday in country 1 and not yet in 2=or reverse. This may even apply to regions in same, large country.

But then every now and then I have to lok into current return fares on short notice (booking long advance will usually give you acces to very, very affordable fares) and I noted that 4-6 week returns leave in august can be had from here from around 666/700 eur-less as 600 GBP. Fares to USA are much more peaked=same price for NY-but thats half the distance.
