How Many Years Until Pattaya In Under Water?

Recommended Posts

With the amount of grog that is consumed in Pattaya, and the amount of twinkles that every drinker makes throughout each night, it's a wonder Pattaya isn't already under water. :o

I can hardly wait for the effects of global warming. Maybe that beachfront property I bought in Arizona will be worth something!

I would think that's far enough down the road that it certainly WON'T be of any concern to me. :o

no problem for you ! you are too old !

but you can start to build in Nepal for your second life ! :o

Is this why they are building so many of those high-rise condo complexes in Jomtien ?

I read a stat some where years ago that mentioned something like 90% of the worlds population lives along coastlines. In many cases, a rise in ocean levels by a foot or two could result in many major cities being flooded (like Bangkok, LA, New York).

Places like Denver, Mexico City and Kabul should be safe for a few years though. :D

It seems that mainstream science completely agrees that the world is on a fast path to radical climate change. And since the world lacks the political will to stop or reverse it, I wonder how many years before this effects coastal Pattaya? Does this mean east of Sukhumwit will be beachfront property?

Gosh, scary stuff and I have no idea where my flippers and inflatable armbands are... :D

Please do share the topographic maps showing the land levels on east and west Sukhumvit that conclude where a new coastline might be.

Take your time, at worst you should have a few millennia to spare before people are scrambling up Buddha Hill, if ever... :o

As I very cleverly bought my peice of land at the top of an incline, my great grand children will be able to sit in the grounds of the Mobi mansion, and dangle their little toes in the warm seas rolling in over East pattaya's golden sands.

"Driving Street" will have become "Sailing Street", and if you feel like a nice cool Chang, you simply tie up your outrigger to the nearest bar stool. :o

King Thaksin the third ("the terrible") will still be ruling Thailand with an iron fist, Chang will still be bringing the world cup to Thailand without any English soundtrack, farangs will still be charged double on the Baht Boats, unprincipled farang salesmen will be selling illegal houseboats to a new generation of retired English sailors, Thai ladyboys will have been cosmetically morphed into mermaids, and the ghost of Mobi D'Ark will be haunting sunken bars of walking street, still trying to decide if he was a social drinker or just a bloody piss head. :D

Something i remembered from the papers about 2 years ago:

Bangkok was sinking. Most places only 1 cm/year but at critical places 4cm/year, and it had to do with the extraction of ground-water.

The study done on that, pointed out that if nothing was done, within 17 years whole of bkk would be submerged. The study recommended with the immediate start of injected the water back into the ground.

At least i found out why every so many years buildings would add steps to their outside stairs....

bit off topic, sorry.

:o ....and the Blues Factory will be playing Handel`s Water Music....and the library will still be the searching hub for many a lost sailor.. :D

Sounds like a rather serious delemma. Can't buy on the first floor because of global warming and can't buy on the higher floors because of - well, you know why. Hmmm, what to do?

Tracker - I remember a similar story. I could be wrong, but I think it was mm's/year not cm's/year

To far away and maybe not the safest area in town. I wouldn’t dare take a ride on my scooter around Lake Mabprachan after dark.

Mais oui mon ami, a name is just that but do you really want "Driving Street" to become Walking Street with the Fishermans on Beach Road? I don't fancy all those tour buses parked outside while they unload hordes of Japs, Chineese and Koreans onto the boats for "Koh Horseshoe Point" and what about the risk from katoeys when you're staggering back from the Terrace late at night?

I think they should start building a sea wall just this side of the Suk Rd. ready for the inevitable day!

PS. I see they have already started preparing for the deluge of sea water if it gets past the railway line or maybe someone as started nicking the drain covers on Soi Siam CC! :o:D:D:D

Even not considering the effects of a rise in sea levels, it appears to me the Pattaya Beach is disappearing. Across from the Royal Plaza on the beach side there's some kind of tourist building. There's some palm trees planted in front of it. The roots of the trees are exposed for about 2 feet. Guessing that the trees were transplanted at the same time the building was built, and taking a wild guess that the building is 20 years old, and seeing that the beach at high tide is only about 2 feet above see level at the sea wall, in 20 years there will be no more beach. Does anyone know how old this building really is? The bottom step of the sea side stairs are also pretty well exposed, and I expect when it was built this was underground.

Well I wouldn't disagree with you, and recently I've been taking steps to increase my home security.

However, apart from the fact that driving motor bikes anywhere in Thailand is bloody dangerous and not to be recommended to those who value their longevity, I certainly wouldn't drive a bike anywhere out of town on quiet country roads , late at night, including the road at Mapbrachan - that is just asking for trouble.

The Steven Parkinson murder was it seems, a bit of a one-off, committed by a gang who were praying on lone motor cyclists in the area late at night. They could, and do, operate in many other such similar areas, as we hear about every day.

It remains to be seen, if there is any repeat of such incidents in the Mabparachan area, but I certainly wouldn't consider it any more unsafe than any other out of town area, but probably fine if you don't use motor bikes late at night.

By the time the sea gets to Mabprachan, the area will not longer be "out of town" - it will be the town. :o
