Did the Thai Royal Navy recently purchase two Oliver Hazard Perry-Class Frigates from the U.S. are is that in the future? I can see which two ones that U.S. navy decided to sell but I can't find out if the Thai Navy has yet to put them out to sea or not. Have these two frigates been given Thai names yet? Thanks for any assistance.

From what I've read, the US offered Thailand the 2 frigates, but Thailand never agreed to the deal. They are still in the US.

They might not even be on offer after the coup

Thailand has also recently ordered two new, modern frigates from South Korea, so they might not be interested in them anymore

Class: KDX-1

Name: DWF-3000 (project name)

Role: DDH, Destroyer with Helicopter

Displacement-3,900 tons

Armament: 1x127mm Oto Malera main-gun, 2x30mm Goalkeeper CIWs, 2x4 cellMK-141 Launcher (RGM-84 Harpoon SSM), 1x16 Cell MK-41 VLS (RIM 7P SeaSparrow SAM), 2x324mm (triple) torpedo tubes (MK-46 ASW torpedoes)

Range: 5,178 miles

Military Lift: 2xHelicopter Pad (Super Lynx)

Due to its size, could be considered more of a frigate than a destroyer. One of the more modern, advanced warships in East Asia. Easily on par with anything Japan and the U.S. has and superior to anything that China can put to sea.

I am tracking that Thailand should receive both of them around 2017. The deal for the OHP-Class Frigates already went through and the contract was made up but I am not tracking if it actually still going to happen due to the coup. A deal for upgrading the Royal Thai Air Force's 32 F-16 Fighting Falcons is still going through so maybe the OHPs will still arrive. With two of the KDX-1s, 2 OHP-Classes and the 2 Knox-Class Frigates still trolling around, Thailand has a respectable little fleet to patrol the Gulf of Thailand with. I know that it will take 3-5 years to outfit (sea trials, crew training) a new ship so it still down the road for any of these ships to make an impact. Thailand is really modernizing and increasing its Patrol Boats with the Krabi, Hua Hin and the Tor 994 and 991 Classes in order to increase security in the Gulf of Thailand and the Malaccan Straights which is a pretty smart move.

The coup did throw a lot of things up in the air. Thailand is a my second home but it is also my job to track the Naval Power in the region so I will keep researching to see if the OHPs do arrive. I need to make some contacts with the military there so will probably have to go through my own military or government even though they are "officially" breaking ties until there is an elected government (except for already agreed upon agreements though).

"and superior to anything that China can put to sea. "

So, you don't count China's recent launch of an aircraft carrier?

I'm not a navel expert but does the Chinese carrier currently have any serviceable aircraft on it? Thailand already has an aircraft carrier but has obviously decided it doesn't really need it as Thailand has no worldwide ambitions!

Type: Aircraft Carrier

Class: Admiral Kuznetsof-Class

Name: PLAN Liaoning

Role: Aircraft Carrier

Origin: Russia

Displacement: 59,100 tons

Commissioned: 1988 (Soviet Union)/ 2012 (China)

Armament: 3x30mm Type-1030 CIWS, 3xHQ-10 SAM (18xMissiles), 2x6 ARSOC (12 Tubes total)

Range; 4,430 miles

Military Lift: 30xFixed Wing (J-15), 24xRotary Wing (Ka-31, Changhe Z-8)

Will be used mainly as a training platform and give the PLAN experience/training in Carrier Operations.

the Liaoning main purpose to give the the PLAN the doctrinal background to not only build a future carrier but have the

a trained and experience crew ready with a a tried doctrine to take her to sea.

India actually has 2 carrier, modified Centaur-Class (UK) expected to be retired by 2020 and the Vikramaditya, a modified Kiev-Class that has been modernized and returned to service in 2013 . India will have their own indigeneously build carrier (the INS Vikrant) possibly commissioned by 2016 and the nuclear powered Vishal set to completed by 2026.

Japan has 2 true Helicopter Carriers with the Izumo set to be commissioned in 2015, a second one to be completed by 2017 and a third one that has been ordered.

South Korea has 3 Dodko-Class Amphibious warfare ships that can be considered Helicopter Carriers as well.

Thai

Along with the Airship, one of Thailand's more questionable military purchases. The Royal Thai navy needs more modern patrol boats, corvettes a few more frigates and possibly 8 diesel-electric submarines (from the Germans as they make best DEs).

...Also, Japan and South Korea have the most modern fleets (not counting the U.S. Pacific Fleet) in the region (Asia). The best trained Navy is Japan, followed by South Korea. The most modern and best Destroyer belongs to the South Koreans with their KDS-III-Class Destroyers (could be considered a cruiser due to their size) followed by the Japanese Atago-Class Destroyers.

What Thailand also really needs is a lot more Helicopters and much more experience in night operations. With the size of the country and the type of terrain they should have the ability to get their infantry and light artillery to anywhere in the country in a matter of hours.

The only place that Chinese "Carrier" is going is Davy Jone's Locker. lol

Well, it won't be going against any of the Nimitz-Class Carriers any time soon...or ever. China is thinking twenty years down the road as far as Carrier Operations. The Liaoning is just a practice platform for both their sailors and their ship-builders who will actually build a true PLAN Aircraft carrier.

Plans for this one?

Can service it's subs unnoticed between those hulls.

BIG image here

Humm ... since we have gone off discussing Thai related subjects ... lets discuss something (remotely) Thai related.

What ever happened to the plan for the Royal Thai Navy to buy those Submarines (I think from Germany)

I think that is the "supercarrier of the future"....

Well, Thailand just opened its new Submarine HQ/Training HQ Squadron http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/thailand-inaugurates-submarine-squadron-hq-but-navy-has-no-subs-1.1902241

They have a German training simulator but no submarines yet. More than likely they will train crews for a few years, get their officers and NONCOMS up to speed and then but some Diesel Electric Submarines from the Germans.
