Just having a small rant.

Why do the Thais advertise prices such as

14,XXX for an aircon.

or

2,XXX,XXX for a condo

or

1,XXX for a room rate

or

21,XXX for a TV.

It annoys me.

Just put the price on the advert.

Thank you.

The obvious reason is so that they look at you and decide how much they can get away with charging you.

It also annoys me, in fact I will not buy anything form a shop that uses this if type of pricing.

What is your problem? Replace XXX with 000, then subtract between 10-30% from that price and make your offer and start the negotiation...

This is Thailand, just in case you forgot...

I love the used car dealers advertising online. How many kilometers? 1xx,xxx. Which obviously means anything from 100 thousand to 200 thousand. laugh.png

I went to a shop that advertised a product for 12,XXX. Being a perennial pessimist, I did not expect the price to be 12,000. I expected it to be 12,999. I wanted the product so I asked for it and laid out my cash, all 12,999 of it. They smiled, wrapped my item and returned to me, nine baht.

I was overjoyed and left the shop with my product, a happy camper.

Just guessing, but I think this practice stems from the way Thais talk about prices. They almost always quote a price as more than (gwah) a certain price and what we westerners would like to know is what the price is equal or less than.

A useful device I employ when I am asked how much I paid for something. I find it is important to give the impression I am always struggling a bit with cash. It keeps the demands at bay.

But when it comes to buying something I want to know how much the asking price is. As one of the replies above, I simply walk away when I see the xxx prices. One reason being that when I have asked in the past, the sales person has to get on a phone and the first sentence is,

"A Farang is asking how much blabblah is".

And I cannot think of a single exception to this.

At which point I say "Mai pen rai" and walk out.
