A person from Cambodia comes to thailand to work.

He gets a job in a factory and all the work permit / paperwork is quickly taken care of.

A person from the UK comes to thailand to work.

He gets a job teaching english, but has to wait possibly a few months and fill out a pile of documents / paperwork for his work permit.

Why is there a difference for different foreigners? Isn't this a double standard?

Or am I not understanding the matter correctly?

Ask the Immigration officer when you arrive next time, same time you can ask him why you have to pay 200 THB to visist a national park in Thailand when the locals pay only 40 THB.

Not at all its a subtle hint that Asian workers are more useful and more wanted in Thailand than the vast majority of westerners thats all

Asians such as Cambodians, burmese etc are wanted, Most "classes" of Westerners are merely tolerated

Aren't these people taking Thai jobs?

Maybe the OP might like to have the same employment conditions that the Cambodian workers gt, if it means getting his WP and Visa faster.

Possible that the OP might be facing some visa issues.

I guess hypothetically, if the jobs not on the prohibited employment list, there is nothing specifically in the labour laws which would stop somebody working for THB 300/day

but one suspects the incumbent better speak Khmer / bumese /Thai fluently as they wouldnt really qualify for the postion if they cant understand the instructions given, but really cant picture a bunch of lilley white "arjans" humping 50kg bags of cement, being knee deep in concrete, climbing laddrers with bricks on their backs can you ?

THB 300/hr !..... actually just pulled the "ready reconer" based on a THB 45k/m salary pre tax its about THB 267.85/hr

To put this into other money terms its about USD 67/d so up about 14% on the US minimum wage or GDP 48.64/d (USD 82.87) or about 20% down on UK minimum wage

(provided I have my minimum wage numbers about right)

In the local supermarket in the UK, there was a Frenchman, German, Greek, Spaniard, Dutch, Belgium, Polish and Portagueese working there and had just arrived in the UK that morning. My Thai wife of 20 years and living in the UK for almost a year isnt allowed to work....example only..double standards or what

So? Every country sets its own rules and regulations, and it's time for you to understand that life is not "fair". Put on your big boy pants.

Many of these workers are brought in by groups, through an Agency. You are not. The Agencies that export/import workers, probably "arrange" things.

This is nothing about double Standards, this is the same as for example in Europe ...

If you are from the UK I cant understand that you ask..

It is not about eastern and western.. it is about foreigners of neighboring countries

who are in ASEAN or other country's citizen.

Korea, Japan and so on are eastern countries too, depending where on earth you stay

IN Europe only EU People are free to travel and work, all others have strong restrictions!

This is just a Standard procedure like in many other countrys
