Popular Post Chillout101
Just got back from Penang with a TV, my first one ever. I do have lots of in/out 30 day stamps mostly because I go here and get visa for Myanmar. The guy looked at all my dates of in and outs and compared them to the Myanmar visas. Finally stamped my TV after 5 minutes. However I saw people being picked out right, left and center and taken away with immigration officers to somewhere else. I suspect they were doing a visa run by air but looks like many many got in trouble. No idea if they got through or not, but it can not have been a good experience for the involved.

Popular Post cornishcarlos
Excellent news…thanks for sharing…especially about the illegals who were being pulled aside. Long may it continue. How do you know they were illegals ?? Just because immigration are tightening the regulations, does not mean that those who previously used 30 day exempt entries and tourist visas were illegals. That was the system in place and that is why some people used that method. Now they will have to use another method to stay long term. Don't be so judgmental.

Jesus christ they are on a visa run, they're not sponging benefits from the Thai government and living off disability payments. I suppose you'll be cheering when they are throwing foreigners into jail for having too many tourist visas.

OMGImInPattaya
As I reported in my Phnom Penh post, this is contrary to my personal experience returning through DM last nite. It might be useful if you gave more information on your status, like age and country of passport. Also, some info on those pulled aside would be helpful...like were they generally young...did they look like Filipino English teachers, Japanese business men, what? I sailed through on my return from PP so obviously there is some reason for the discrepancy. Edited July 19, 2014 by OMGImInPattaya

"9) Do not post inflammatory messages on the forum, or attempt to disrupt discussions to upset its participants, or trolling.Trolling can be defined as the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet by posting controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion." In my opinion your post came under this rule.

In other cases, some people appear to not fall into any particular category, but may be out rock hunting in the hills of Thailand for more than a few months. Perhaps dad and mom are supporting them, or they just saved up for a year off from school. Other that that, Oil workers and contractors that want to extend a vacation here after a protracted period of hard labor. Cannot say that any particular individual that gets pulled out of line for questioning is illegal ...or misusing tourist visas. Perhaps a few of them are not up to snuff and are unaware of the crackdown. None will go to jail or get charged...i wager.

slipperylobster
Just speculating (I wear glasses).... It appears that a new system is in place, perhaps not publicized. It would not be difficult for an Immigration network database to be merged with other data bases. These other data bases would contain information gleaned from hotel records, banks, Condo Purchases (Homes are irrelevant as you cannot purchase), Police Records, and possibly....information provided by your own Embassy. Perhaps they even have informants snitching on you. It is not that I am aware of any such capability, but if I was running Immigration here, I would definitely like to have that in place. Such a system would throw a red flag up, and after confirming on your passport that you are a frequent "visitor"....It would explain why some people get pulled aside. Off the top of my head I can think of 2 groups of people using back to back visas that are not breaking the law. 1. those on a disability pension who cannot afford to live in their home country. 2. Off shore workers wo choose to come to thailand on their days off.

Popular Post rbmcn
I find the bizarre, quirky and dangerous anger apparent in many posts here to be out of place. Ad hominem rants should be removed by the admin, IMHO. If posters want to fight/ insult/ preach/chastize then go to a British pub and do it. On the topic itself, I think anyone who plays the immigration system in the US, Canada, UK, HK or Thailand should be removed and excluded permanently. Guests should abide by the law of the host country. Period. Past faulty enforcement should not prevent present rigorous screening. That's my opinion whether I am 250 lbs and 6'8", 5'0" and 100lbs wet, whether I am white, black or something else, whether I have numerous university degrees or a pass in High School, whether a lefty or conservative. You do not have to insult me in order to exchange ideas and information. Get my drift? Just saying.
