Many years ago I read a book, that I really liked, and I would like to read it again.

It was about Thailand.

The main character's name was Somchai, a policeman.

His mother owned a bar with girls (first time I heard the term, mamasan)

He was in love with one of the girls.

A very nice description of the conflict between police and the army.

Sorry can't remember much more, but I enjoyed reading it.

Does anybody know the name of this book or the author?

Many Thanks

Bangkok Eight

Author = John Burdett. I read them all, enjoyed them, bought them mostly at Suvarnabhumi on travels.

Thank you MrToad and Mr Upnotover.

Doesn't ring a bell, but I will look for it.

How many in the series Mr Upnotover?

Seems I have a lot of reading to do.

Ah, just found it......John Patrick Burdett (born 24 July 1951) is a British crime novelist. He is the bestselling author of Bangkok 8 and its sequels, Bangkok Tattoo, Bangkok Haunts,The Godfather of Kathmandu. His most recent novel in this series, Vulture Peak, was released on 10 January 2012.

Many Thanks again.

There's five so far in the series, it's not actually Somchai, but Sonchai. They are a good read IMO
