I was rushed to the hospital last night with terrible pain in my back and abandon, turned out I have kidney stones. Anyone any idea where to go for treatment and at what cost?

Have they passed into your bladder?

I had the same, very painful but over the course of about 8 hours the stone passed into the bladder. They gave me some meds to dissolve them and they worked. I wasn't looking forward to pissing them out.

Edit: I was at the hospital for 4 hours and they really looked after me. I bypasssed the registration process when they saw the pain I was in and the doctor diagnosed it within 10 minutes and confirmed it with an xray. I was on painkillers within 15 minutes that worked immediately. Had an X-Ray, IV painkillers that had me on the moon, and a bucket load of painkillers and other meds to take home. All up it was 8,000 Baht at Pattaya Bangkok Hospital.

Oooh! Very painful.
Didn't the hospital tell you how to get rid of them?
I think they have to pass by themselves.
Never had them, but my good friend had them 3 times.
Said it was the most painful thing he's ever gone through.

He believes it comes from not drinking enough water.
So, he's always with a water bottle and trying desperately to not let them happen again.

Good luck.

I was at Phuket Int. and they gave me some painkillers, something against abandon pain and gastritis. Don't know if they passed to my bladder. Was told to visit a specialist but before I do I will have a look around, cost wise.

Last night cost me about 7.000-- so that's not to bad.

I think for the moment I'll go with the water method and see how it goes. My pain was (I think) increased a lot by the fact that my wife thought I had just muscle pain and therefore gave me a massage :-(

If it/they have passed into your bladder, but are too big to pass through the urethra (your penis) you have some long term problems requiring further medical treatment.

If there is just one, and there usually isn't, they/you may allow it to occasionally just block the flow of passing urine and you can manage it for a while.

If there are several, and over time there usually is, you may pass the smaller ones (ouch) and the bigger ones remain in your bladder, causing more restriction to the flow of urine.

The stones can be shattered with shock waves these days, and another member has posted that this is available in Thailand.

In the past years, your kidneys would have to pass them to your bladder, causing extreme pain - managed with pain killers, and then you had surgery where a claw type device was inserted into your urethra, and then into your bladder. The claw was then opened and it would grab a stone and crush it, thus making a bigger stone into a lot of smaller stones that could be passed. Unfortunately, they had sharp edges after crushing, so when passing, even more OUCH, and a lot of blood. Luckily, technology has come a long way since then.

Drinking more water and lowering your uric acid will help in the future, but not for the stones that have already formed.

I hope, for your sake, after investigation, they are small enough to pass through the kidneys, with the use of pain killers, and then out through the urethra, which is painful enough.

I went down with kidney stones in Greece a few years back and lived on morphine/codeine until I got back home to the UK. As I still hadn't passed them after a few days I had them removed through my urethra, under general anaesthetic. Not pleasant, but better than the pain of having them!

The first one can be a bit scary, even terrifying. You can never be sure exactly where the pain will hit you. I have even had chest pain.

I pass kidney stones frequently, and don't know where you should have yours treated. I use simple measures, such as taking a strong pain reliever and drinking lots of water (not beer) to encourage the stone to pass.

If this doesn't reduce your symptoms, your doctor may recommend something like like ultrasound therapy.

Ultrasound therapy for kidney stones is also called lithotripsy. This treatment generates sound waves that break your kidney stones into smaller pieces, allowing them to pass through your urinary tract more easily, with less pain.

Do a search for "extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy"

My stones all pass and I keep the pain meds handy at all times in case one comes up suddenly.

I stopped drinking beer years ago and it seems to have resulted in fewer stones. Hopefully some of the TV experts can make some other diet recommendations here.

I had one many years ago, only small but very painful. It found it's way to my bladder and then out through my penis over a period of days, not pleasant at all. At that time I used to drink whisky and was informed by my doctor that whiskey could be the cause.

I stopped and have never had one since. (phew)

i love roasted cashews and by the look and colour of the 5mm one i passed a week ago thats what is causing the stones googled and its confirmed that cashews can create kidney stones . stopped eating cashews and all nuts now but i know i have more inside, pain started already . not sure what the one last year was from but it sure tore me up inside and pissed a huge amount of blood so probably one of those sharp calcium stones .

i drink 2 litres of water every day and my total fluid intake (no alchahol) is 3.5 litres including 100% fruit juice and other assorted drinks .

Find some "Cranberry Extract" capsules. I used to produce kidney stones like a gravel pit. About eight years ago I started taking three 4,600mg Natures Valley Cranberry Fruit capsules every day and haven't had a stone since. Check them out! Many people take them for 'uniary tract health' and the really work!

Poker face…did you get the Cranberry Extract capsules in Thailand or your home country?

If in Thailand was it at a pharmacy?

Thanks.

Of course drink as much water as you can. For me, cola soda is bad. Fat foods and especially bad foods like hot dogs can trigger for me too. There is a rumored cure, never done it, something about taking olive oil and lemon. A lot about this on the Net.

Cranberry in various formulas is available on the web from iHerb.com. it's said that if you ask them to ship via USPS, the supplements will usually reach you free of customs duty. Other methods such as Fedex, etc. are getting hung up in customs. Read about shipment to Thailand on the iHerb website. When you order, say that NEY546 referred you and we both receive $10. Absolutely no increase in the cost of the supplements to you. Cheers!

Yep, even just cranberry juice as part of your fluid intake is good. It also helps women with frequent urinary infections. I never researched the chemical mechanism. Maybe something like the "lime reduction chemical" you use in your toilet? w00t.gif

After finding some stones with an ultrasound exam, Dr Yodsak at Bangkok Pattaya hospital prescribed a compound called Uralyt-U.
Mixed with water and taken twice a day to change the PH, it attacks and prevents stones.
I drank the soultion for 2 months and the stones were not detected at the next ultrasound exam.

I plan on running this stuff thru my system for a month every year.

Anyone any idea where to go for treatment and at what cost?

I'm surprised the Phuket International doesn't have an appropriate specialist.

Bangkok International Phuket has a large Kidney (Nephrology) centre and they advertise they treat kidney stones.

I can recommend the lovely Dr Onchuma.

I was told by a UK nurse that kidney stone pain is worse than giving birth. I used to get them a lot in England. Again I was told to drink more but tea/coffee contain the calcium that formed the stones. Horses get them & they make them take a beer mash & walk them up & down - the vibration helping to pass the stones. I asked if I could get a National Health prescription for beer but the doctor declined.

On my final bout they inserted a mini-umbrella up my front passage & opened it. This widens the tube. My 1st pee after the op was excruciating but I've never been troubled since in 25 years even in Thailand where I sweat a lot.

"I was rushed to the hospital last night ... Anyone any idea where to go for treatment"

Not trying to be funny, but if you were taken to a hospital, wouldn't that have been a good place to seek treatment or to get a referral?

Update; Seen the specialist who works both at Phuket Int. and Wachira. The latter one being much cheaper I went there. Have to make a "special" colored x-ray on Wednesday to be sure its actually kidney stone. Until then no treatment possible, just pain killers for different things.

I had them quite a few years ago,the hospital up here in Chiang Mai,

had just recently obtained an ultra-sonic machine,i paid BHt 25K

for the treatment, been of a rather large build (fat) they were not

sure about the settings to apply, this machine was just like someone

hitting you in the back with a hammer, over and over.

I was pissing blood and bits of flesh for days, they nearly killed

me,hardly ate for a couple of months,lost 20 kg.,never went back

i am sure now the know how to use the machine, but then i was a

guinea pig.

A few years later ,one Sunday morning, went for a piss, flow going

OK,then i felt something moving through my tubes, and block,I am

shaking like a leaf, thinking how are they going to unblock me !

scared to go to hospital,a couple hours later i am bursting for a

piss,go to the toilet and point, trying to force a piss, when the stone

comes out like a bullet, ricocheting around the bowl, black stone

about size of small pea,

Up here in the North it seems quite common with Thais as something

to do with the hard water,i think.

Hello,

Do you know if 25000 is the cheapest price that we can get in a public hospital for shockwave treatment (the ball on the back) ?

And is it really painful ? Why ? It's just a ball -)

Thank you for your help.

Went to a pharmacy nearby my house, she wanted 1000thb for a small bottle of capsules.......outrageous. Went to a different pharmacy that had a larger selection of supplements, didn't have but said could order for me, 30 capsules 390thb.

Had this kidney stone thing happen last year, 30,000thb and a nights stay at Bangkok Phuket, but my BUPA plan covered it.
