Never like Stickman.

Used to love trink until he told everyone that HIV didn't lead to AIDS.

Happy memories sitting in Bobby's Arms Pub reading two pages of trink on a friday after work before hitting 'the pong' for some serious drinking in Mississippi Queen or the Pink Panther. Anyone remember them or The Kangaroo bar lol, used to have wicked ' Thai sticks' there.

I have met Stickman on a number of occasions through mutual friends.

Very nice guy...clean cut and got his game together...real nice guy and you would have no problem introducing him to your family or mates.

Wish him all the best now he has sold the site and there is a new writer/owner...brilliant exit strategy.

Trink was sad and cheap, he was like your original backpacker here in the 70's when he worked for the Bangkok World newspaper.. His silly photo with a pipe, but the worst of it was that he was a kid from the streets of NY, Manhattan just like me. He wouldn't have lasted in my neighborhood, that's why he moved here. He also was always talking about the buses in Bangkok, In my 37 years of living here I have never been on a bus. As for the stickman more helpful plus stickman never did a book review. .

I have followed stick for over 10 years not ever week but most and over that time the night lights lose there pull and you see Thailand for what it is. Having money helps enjoy it here. But if you were a teacher like Stick say for 80% of the time you have been living in Thailand then you would not be saving much. Living in Bangkok would not help matters either.

With Stick maybe the years have caught up with him. And he is now looking at taking his own advice and getting out to try and make some real money in the time he has left. He being a teacher for so long in Thailand you would not say he would have saved much from that job.

Then he gave it up and went full time into his site so then again maybe he was making 20% more than teaching doing full time site work. still not allowing you too save very much. Not forgetting the cost of his Hi so wife and his time spent in the bars and travelling around Asia not cheap to do all that.

If what some say his wife may have done a runner that would make it harder for him to want to stay here.

He will come right the house pricers in N.Z.have more than doubled in less that 6 years so he will wait for his folks to pass and then he will be sitting prity. Who knows when that happens he might come back to Thailand with cash in his pocket and not have to worry about his next baht. But then he might become one of the old retired farts he talked about in his pagers hanging on to the arm of a young brown thing in a short dress with a big tat on her leg.

Stickman has been around for years and has been threating to leave for years, goodbye. What is he going to do go back to New Zealand and be a teacher. I found him to be a bit thin skinned and withlittle imagination and if you wrote something to his website he didn't agree with or wasn't on his agenda he would have a fit. I stopped reading his drivel more than 10 years ago and have not missed it at all

Writing a column week after week after week for ten years on ANY subject is not an easy task. All in all I think Stick did a good job.

My only "beef" is when he played "detective" going around lying to bar girls as to who/what he was up to in order to catch them in a lie

So you take money from your client and LIE to catch a bar girl who LIES to take money from her client? Say what?

What are you talking about?

How would you have gone about doing the job then?

"Hi sweetheart. I work for your sponsor. He wants me to find out if you go with other guys when he's paying you a stipend"??!!

Very simple. I would not have "done the job".

"hi potential client......no I do not lower myself to go lie to bargirls to make a few bucks finding out what anyone with an IQ in double digits would already know."....

Well it's not like Stick was really lying was it?

He simply enquired as to whether the target was amenable to "accommodating" him by engaging in the usual small talk that supposedly precedes these types of liaisons.

Wouldn't call it lying but each to his own definition, eh?

While I tend to agree with the assertion that any guy with a brain SHOULD know, who's to say it's "lowering oneself" to make money out of those who don't?

I'm not retirement age,

But is it just me but is retiring in thailand fraught with danger

If you are. A teacher, your salary is ok by thai standards but not by the Western world, so once you come to thailand, then while property prices increase back home in your original currency

That means you will never be able to go back.home since prices ans cost of living. Are higher,

No doubt you'll have no savings unless you have a business or got lucky

Seems like a last resort for those with not much of a career or financial strength, and with a lot of personal baggage

Just observing from the stories I hear

I think you mean stories you imagine. The smart guys got out of the West before the housing bubble burst and when the baht was it's weakest; converted holdings and made 20% profit and didn't lose any money in the bubble bursting in the West. It would be about 10 years ago. No problem going home as they all made a good profit exchanging currency and other assets.

Face it all the old guys posting here have done well. Is it too late now? Maybe. My pension has a cost of living clause and keeps up with inflation in the West. I could go back anytime and buy my old house for half of what I sold it for. I could go back but I'm paying 40 baht for a kilo of scallops why should I?

Seriously has no one else noticed that the writer has changed and that it is no longer the old Stcikman writing the articles each week??

I think he has already sold it...seriously

Oh yes, I'm sure he's done a bunk and left the site to run itself by other punters. In recent months the photo prize has gone along with his hand written addressed prizes and there's a lot more T&A on the site - (cannot imagine the original Stick would suffer the girl of the week photos, a bit beneath him).

I don't care who writes it really, as long as it keeps going! So what's with the 2015 Q1 ending referred to in last weeks blog, will the site close as well?

I don't havr a high powered career, nor do I have a business that's raking in lots of money

I personally would only retire in thailand if either I had a huge passive income that I could live like a king, or that I had such little income and thought my life here would be hell that I could get good value by moving to thailand

I'm right in the middle, so can't really see myself making a permanent move

i suppose it makes sense that stick would just slip away in the night in order to keep his moneymaker in operation but surely he knows many people and they would spill the beans ? Galt would love to cause him trouble again no doubt, his customers would know for sure where he is as he has to sign contracts with them.

was hoping for one last expose with trink if he is still in town

Pretty sure he is still here in Bkk. If the site ends the knockers will be all nostalgic in a few years like they are with Trink, who was, lets be honest, nowhere near as good as Stick.

I take a keen interest in the value of ecommerce and blog sites.

Anecdotally Stickman has mentioned that business generally sell for 3 to 4 times earnings....seperately he mentioned in other articles that he would not let his site go for less than 12,000,000 (but he is dreaming at that price and that could include private eye income also).

I am convinced he is no longer the writer and so he has probably sold it (plenty of likely takers in Bangkok and as mentioned before I wouldn't be surprised if it was doing circa $6k to $7k per month on the advertising)....

At 12,000,000THB he would of been dreaming but lets say $7k per month for $84k per year x 3 = $252K....move back to NZ with a fully paid for house and no mortgage....I would say he has done very well for himself and not many people leave Thailand in such a good position.

One thing it is not his house in N.Z. it is his parents so maybe he has gone back to suck up to them b4 the end ( joking) but you get my meaning. 252k in the bank in NZ say 4% . - TAX would bring him in per year 7k.

He needs to earn heap there to be able to say he will live well on retirement. So my bet is he will sneak back to Thailand in the years to come after selling his parents home and look for a new partner and start all over again :) But not pay sinsot or pay her parents any thing. Also he would not live in Bangkok one would then say the wheel would then have turned a full circle for him. Any how best of luck to him N.Z. is not cheap to live there any more.

I had a lot of fun reading readers submissions in the past like the series incountry by chiang mai kelly and princess.

But with all the ads on his site for escorts and bars and such the guy is just making money on the back of woman who come from a bad socio economic background and just like foreign bar owners is just an ordinary pimp.

So he can eff off for all i care and be a sheep farmer in NZ for all i care.
